I bought the Glk 27 (compact) 40..ammo slightly cheaper, if you want to use for target, and a little more comfortable for continued target use. It was recommended by several policeman I spoke with also. The compact 40 has a slightly larger capacity, with the ammo being smaller. 'thought that was good for the self-defense.
I took my boys with me to a local range, where you could rent multiple brands and models...all three of us hit the bull's eye first time with the Glock. We couldn't say that for any of the 7 others. The others took a couple/few rounds to get the feel. I bought the Glock. Since that was about the time when the Springfield first came out, I can't remember whether that was one we shot. Bottomline, it's definitely personal preference.
Use it and get a good comfort level. I also bought another of the same model, for my wife, at a local reputable pawn shop. It had been shot about 4 or 5 times. 'could tell by the internal scratches, and comparing with my mine, which had been shot about 100 times, when I bought hers. I saved about 150. :)
My younger son, just out of the Marines, recently bought one of the Glock 45 models. He was hitting the target accurately at about 75 to 80 yards. (He's not your average shooter, though. When he graduated boot camp.. he was somewhere in the top of the 600+ man company)
Good Luck, and Safe Shooting!

Not the thinnest gun, but a very good and solid defense weapon.

Switched to chiefly carrying a Walther PPS9 which is a more comfortable carry weapon, and would heartily recommend it.

But for a 40, the XD is a great weapon.

If Arthritis is an issue (assuming it's the hammer that's causing problems), I'd say go with the .40 cal if your limiting yourself to the XD or Glock and .40 vs .45. Minor difference in recoil with a 40 vs 45 to the wrist, but it could make a difference in your willingness to PRACTICE PRACTICE PRACTICE with the gun and how comfortable you are with it. Plus as pointed out, ammo for .40 is slightly less and that adds up. Finally with you saying it's home defense, I'd go full size, the added barrel weight will help you compensate for recoil, plus your not going to be concealing it so why go small.

Both the XD and Glock G22 are great guns, just have to determine how the grip feels in your hand.

Try to find a local gun shop or pawn shop that has an indoor range that you can rent a gun to try out. That will help you a lot in your decision and the store you shoot at can give you some great advise.

PS: The .45 vs .40 vs 9mm - which is the best, is just as bad as any football argument on gun forums.

with a 12 gauge pump shotgun loaded with 00 buckshot. I prefer the Remington 870. As far a semi autos go, I'd feel comfortable with any caliber from 9mm, 40, and 45.

I carried a glock model 22 40 cal when i was in law enforcement, but I always liked the 1911's for my personal use.

If you are bent on a modern gun, the XD and glocks are great reliable guns. You might also consider the FN, I've got one of these, great gun.

It is little less speed of a 9MM and less power of the .45 cal. Most cops use a .40 these days. I have a Berretta .40 cal and the US Navy used the weapon by the hunreds of thousands.

Dec 13, 2012, 1:43 AM [ in reply to Re: Auto pistols. Which is the better one, the 40 or the 45. And ]

I just made a trade for one of my 38's and a hundred bucks for a smith&wesson 40 cal with the green lazer site. We meet in Lexington Friday morning to make the trade. He just got his CWP and the 40 is to big for the concealment he wants. The 38 with the +P ammo is pretty stout. He will most likely want my Tarus hammer less J frame stainless. I paid $530 for it in 2008. Even though Smith makes The Tarus. My Tarus is a much better gun than my Smith. He will get what he wants, and I get I guess what I want. I don't know much about the smith 40, or any other auto for that matter. But I will learn for sure. Thanks guys for the in put, and a point for each.

It depends on the Smith & Wesson, if it is the Sigma, stay away from it, they are terrible. I prefer the XD over the Glocks personally. I think the XD's are better balanced and the grip angle is better for me.

I suggest you go to a local indoor range that rents/sells firearms and shoot both the Glock and the XD as well as a 1911. If you plan on having it for home use only and not trying to carry concealed, you cannot go wrong with the 1911. They are by far the best shooting pistol I have ever fired.

I like the grip of the XDM over the Glock. The 45 has less felt recoil than the 40 due to lower velocity.

You can't go wrong with the Glocks if you don't mind the ergonomics of the grip. Most 1911 fans hate the angle. You just gotta love those 33 round fun sticks and although they are almost useless, there is the option to stick a 100 round drum in the 9mm's. Glock is my choice no matter the caliber.

1. They are easy to sell if you don't like it.

2. You won't take a big loss if you do decide to sell it.

3. The aftermarket parts are endless.

4. Rock solid performance.

5. Full size magazines will fit in the sub-compacts.

.45 is more accurate, more stopping power, and is more intimidating. Ammos are both expensive.. As far as Glock versus XDM, I personally can't shoot a Glock, the grip angle sux for me and I can't shoot a totally flat topped gun. XDM's seem to feel better to hand but I've never shot one. Actually I'm not going to be a fan of either though because I'm old school and prefer hammers to striker fires. Pick the one that feels better in your hand. Both are very reliable.
