Thoughts on this? This guy is pretty succesfull...

Gus Malzahn's thoughts on short yardage when you are gun-oriented...

discuss...

The next time Auburn faces fourth-and-short at a crucial point of a game game, don't be surprised if Gus Malzahn pulls a Clemson.

Armchair quarterbacks set Twitter ablaze when Clemson lined up in the Shotgun formation on fourth-and-1 in overtime against Florida State Saturday. The Tigers did not pick up the first down on a run play, which started six yards behind the line of scrimmage and ended its first and only possession in overtime. The Seminoles took over and scored the game-winning touchdown two plays later, ending the Tigers' upset bid against the No. 1 team in the country.

The most common criticism at the time: Why distance yourself further from the line of scrimmage when all you need is two feet for a first down?

Well, if Auburn was presented the same situation, Malzahn would likely line go into the Shotgun formation, too.

"I feel like we've got a good plan," Malzahn said Monday during his appearance on his radio show. "Now, we're a Shotgun-oriented offense and of course we led college football in rushing last year and I don't think (we had) maybe four or five snaps under center, so I'm not in that train of thought that thinks you have to get under center to get a yard. I really think you can do it from the Shotgun. That's just been our philosophy. It's just about executing, so I know that when people don't get it, when it's this far, you hear the commentators and all that. They talk about why couldn't they get under center? But I just don't have that same philosophy."

Perhaps the Under Center Absolutists could explain how this

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

ok here's my thought: this guy (and our coaches) have

Sep 23, 2014, 9:17 AM

forgotten more football than I'll ever know but when you get under center, don't you take most of the defense out of the picture as it pertains to making the play. When the QB sneak is run (when the line of scrimmage is 6" from the goal line) there are only 2 or 3 guys that are going to be in position to make the play and (in my opinion) increases your odds of scoring.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I would argue that you bring more defenders into the play...

Sep 23, 2014, 9:21 AM

you allow the LBs to sit right on top of the DL, and depending on formation, you bring the corners and safety into the box...

I hear what you're saying, but I think the issue here is that "this is who we are and what we do". Under Morris, we have picked up many, many 4th and 1's in the gun. We have scored many, many times inside 1 out of the gun.

I get that what happened lends credence to questioning it... but our history says we convert that.

opponent's defensive line, you can't just line up and blow them off the ball consistently. We aren't Alabama(not sure Alabama is any more). Malzahn's/Morris's offense is designed to compensate for that and take some pressure off your linemen. If you line up every time under center and sneak it, you eliminate one of your offense's biggest advantages.

If we had anywhere near the talent on the offensive line

Sep 23, 2014, 10:02 AM

that Auburn has, we wouldn't be having this conversation.

Even Auburn, with one of the most talented offensive lines in college football, would still line up in the shotgun in that situation. There is nothing inherently wrong with doing it.

I have one thought for this discussion. WE GOT BEAT IN OVERTIME, WHEN WE COULD NOT MAKE 1 YARD. BEST WAY OR NOT, WE DID NOT WIN! if it works it is the best play and if it does not work, you are open for being questioned as a coach. that is why you are paid 1.4 million a year. get the one yard. WE DO NOT CARE HOW YOU GET THE 1 ONE YARD, just get IT !!!!!

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

another thing I've noticed... and I can't put my finger

Sep 23, 2014, 9:50 AM [ in reply to i'm not surprised that a coach that is determined to run it ]

on it...

but I think Morris has taken too much stuff from other places to try and build his package. I think he's trying to cater so much to our skill guys outside, which are obviously very talented, that we've lost that "run right at you" mentality he wants.

Re: awesome and 0-2 with 31 total points vs the most important

Sep 23, 2014, 11:01 AM

I have issues with the offensive coordinator as well. I just don't think the short yardage or red zone play calling are the major concerns.

military_donation.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

it's problematic of spread offenses and one of the reasons

Sep 23, 2014, 11:08 AM

chad likes to take shots inside/< the opponent's "fiddy/fordy".

as the field shrinks so does the space spread offenses rely on to make the magic happen. i'll admit it forever that i hate spreads; i'll never say differently. they were designed by coaches that admitted they could not beat opponents physically at the point of attack so they spread the oline splits, spread the skill players and tried to take advantage of the space created through scheme. when you get a spread team in the red zone, they are out of their comfort zone and it showed horrifically saturday night.

it's the very reason for sammy's wr option pass[imo] because the field was shrinking.

coaches aren't stupid, they know the shortcomings. saturday night was abysmal. 7 for 17 is atrocious.

Everything's cyclical. Eventually offenses will swing back

Sep 23, 2014, 11:28 AM

to the more traditional power type/pro offense.

As defenses get smaller and quicker trying to combat the smaller/quicker athletes utilized in the spread offense, more offenses will start pounding it more up the middle to take advantage of smaller LB's

How long this cycle will last, I do not have the answer for.

maybe they're onto something cause they keep tappin dat spread #### clemson runs out.

anyway, i get the idea of the spread, i hate its inherent weaknesses and here we are in the middle of discussing it.

i think dabo is what college football should be about, unfortunately "he's" too few and far between. i hope he grows up quickly, he seems to be, but jimbo said it best, "his team knows how to win those games" and that's what it's going to take to win acc titles, beat our instate rival and then make the playoffs.

Auburn is much more physical and run oriented. My biggest issue with Chad Morris has always been that he can't seem to adapt or make adjustments. I would love to hear Chad Morris speak candidly about how much of that is his philosophy as opposed to personnel differences. How much different would Clemson's offense look if we had Florida State or Auburn's offensive line?

military_donation.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

i think we had part of that answer when darryl smith saw so

Sep 23, 2014, 11:49 AM

little time in thechad's system. it's one of the biggest reasons i think chad is full of it. smith was every bit the hammer prosch was and significantly underplayed comparatively.

malzahn committed to something, took the players he had including a defensive back off the scrapheap from uga and turned him into an all sec qb running the football.

i loved when they put desteph in the fb/hb role before his injury. he was blowing crap up. i've seen fleming in that role a couple times. maybe he's the future there?

yorkie touched on it, it seems chad has too much going on sometimes and not enough KISS.
