At this point, a WIN is a WIN and........long

the game went pretty much exactly how I predicted yesterday, a Grind with the D having to step up and make plays to win which is exactly what they did. If you think about it, down 2 AA type DTs and banged up in the back end, they bent a lot but never broke esp with the game on the line.

Mafah did bring some burst and energy. That kid, if he stays healthy and gets the opportunities, is going to be special. If you watched, he picked up the blitz well and generally played remarkably well for this first time out. Got to question why you would have wanted to redshirt him, esp in these times with the transfer portal. He's a player, play him.

DJ - whew - honestly. He seems to be a great kid who wants to be a D1 QB but maybe, just maybe, he's a better pitcher than QB. If I recall, that seemed to be his passion in HS and he wanted to play both sports. Perhaps, it's his family situation - who knows - but something about him doesn't seem right. All that being said, it's clear that we are riding with him regardless, so we might as well make the best of it and open the competition this Spring when the TX HS kid comes in.

Give props to the OL, not great but a helluva lot better than recent weeks. Moving Bockhurst to OG might be the play. Sitting 74 when Putnam gets back will probably help as well. But, having backs that will hit the hole and show some burst helps.

WR/TE - ugggghhhh - DJ has zero touch in the passing game so when he makes a good throw it has to be caught, see Ngata, Ladson and Ross drops. Also, looks like Ross may be tapping out which, if he is going to play tentative, is probably best. #88 is just miserable all the way around. Go ahead and play Ennis and stone hands Lay along with #84 and move on from #88.

It was a grind, just like we said it would be but a WIN is a WIN - ask TX AM, OREGON and FL. It's going to be a crazy year with 2 superior teams - UGA and BAMA - and the rest of field with huge problems and inconsistencies. EVERY GAME this year, with this offense is going to be a grind.

realistic assessment of where we are right now.

It’s not where we’ve been for a while and hopefully not where we’ll be for long, but it is what it is in 2021.
