12:30 only 600 of them were still alive, but they had taken the beach. Or at least had a foothold. Think about that next time you ridicule Old Gray Haired men. And I don't mean us 64 year old gray haired men. I mean, the handful that are left that did us the greatest solid ever. And by the way, a lot of them were babies. Look at some of their faces on old pics. They were absolutely "The Greatest Generation".

Happy D Day.

America is still the greatest country in the world. It just needs a little fine tuning right now.

I have my Uncle's pocket Bible and bayonet that he had with him on D-Day The Bible has notes in it about where they were, and they doubted any would survive. He had to defend the Rangers who scaled the Cliffs of Pointe du Hoc. These items are 2 of my most prized possessions.
Thank you to all of the armed forces.

Below is a link to a bombardiers mission diary who my dad flew with in the war. The whole site is interesting but this gives a recap of the day to day missions the men ( late teens to mid 20's) flew. Greatest generation is such and understatement for what all these men did.

Allies had not fed Hitler enough "disinformation" and set up a "cardboard army" of fake tanks and other equipment across from Calais, France. They had Hitler at least partially convinced that Calais was where the invasion would come. So, at least some lives were saved on the beaches of Normandy that fateful day.

And watch Operation Mincemeat for further deception about the invasion.

Today some stupid jack A would tweet details and pics and ruin the surprise

was a waste of men.

The argument was that allied forces needed a second front and this needed to establish a beach head in the West and thus Normandy.

I argued that The allied forces were moving up through the Italian peninsula and were able to bomb Germany at will.

Russians had broken the siege of Stalingrad and were already gaining ground in the east.

so there were already 2 fronts. Opening a beach head would mean having a 3rd front.

i guess we didn't trust the Russians which historically proved to be the correct decision.

oh.. and if you like learning about the non-battle operations which helped win the war... Watch "Operation Mincemeat" or "Imitation Game" on Netflix.

Agree with everything, but they were the Soviets then and not just Russians.

All those women spies that England was training and sending behind enemy lines reporting what the Germans were doing, was like having an Ace in the hole for allied forces!!! And there were a lot of them caught, and assonated for everyone to witness them being shot in the back of their head while kneeling down in front of other POW's!!! There is a really good movie on Netflix about those brave women also....

they also put patton in charge of the fake army thinking the nazis would expect him to lead the invasion.it took a while for george to get past his missteps and get back on the field.my uncle was with him in the bulge.

One of the smartest, and coolest things they were doing, was when they parachuted all those dummies behind enemy lines to freeze the German forces to one area, while they were being attacked in another area!!!

Agree! My grandpa was one of those baby faced men. He was and will forever be my hero. Wish he was still here so my son could hear his stories. They don’t make them like him anymore.

My Uncle Charles Philips was there also, incredible man, worked on his farm as a kid taking care of animals and helping in the gardens.

Walked around with a pistol in his back pocket at all times just in case..lol

My brother & I clicked a switch blade comb behind him one time & he swung around with pistol in his hand in a split second, scared us because we never noticed he carried it until after that day. He told us to never do that again, we didn’t realize the affect the war had on him as kids but he told us a few stories that were so frightening.

Nothing but respect for all who Serve! Thank you all!

The landings started around 6:30 am and the idea was not to hold the beach but to head inland. My father was in the 16th Reg. of the 1st Division. He survived North Africa, Sicily, Normandy, the north side of the Battle of the Bulge, crossed the bridge at Remagen, and went all the way to Pilsen. My brothers and I were told a lot of stories.
