Saw an article that on this date in 1916....

Oct 7, 2022, 8:35 AM

Ga Tech football beat Cumberland 222-0; and that was with shortened 3rd and 4th quarters. There were ZERO first downs by either team in the game.

Joe Biden was Cumberlands QB. Did for them what he does as President.

There's an interesting back story on this

Oct 7, 2022, 8:53 AM

that kind of echoes the way money games are played today.

Cumberland College signed the contract to play Tech in Atlanta one or two years ago before the game was to be played. In the meantime, Cumberland decided to drop their football program and notified Tech tha they would not be available to play. Rather than saying okay and finding a new opponent (no idea how hard that would have been in that era), Tech sued for lost income and Cumberland agreed to send a team.

What they sent was a ragtag group of volunteers who had probably never even seen a football field. Every time Cumberland snapped the ball, they got crushed. Every time Tech snapped the ball, they scored a touchdown.

Tech got their gate receipts and Cumberland collected for their "money" game.

You're correct. CC had disolved their program two years prior. Have read their team for the Tech game was scrounged from the fraternities. Only a couple had ever played football. Seem to recall Heisman intended to sue for about $2500. Doubt CC made much for the game. Should've told Heisma to pound the turf. Unlikely a court would've have given the win. The record is bogus and shouldn't be an official sports record.

Cumberland had suspended their football team at the start of that season and recruited frat members to play. Cumberland had beaten Ga Tech in baseball earlier by 22-0 and the baseball coach suspected they had stacked the team and wanted revenge. The baseball coach was also the football coach. It was John Heisman!!

Clemson beat Guilford 122-0 during that era.

And guess who was the Clemson coach for that game? None other than the very same John Heisman!
