What
I would like to know more about Frank Beamer's surgery. What was the procedure and why was it done. Thanks!
-- Paul J. Burchett
I understand privacy issues, but I'm a little surprised we don't know more about Frank Beamer's health, including follow-up treatment from his throat surgery. Sounds serious. Despite his privacy, he is still a public figure, and his ability to perform his job could be compromised, which greatly affects the Virginia Tech community. What effect does the condition he had/has have on his ability to perform his duties long term? Should we be worried and prayerful about Coach Beamer's prognosis?
-- G. H. Latham, Rockville
There seems to be plenty of interest in Beamer's condition, and rightfully so, since he's been the face of the Virginia Tech football program for nearly three decades. But I do think these claims that he's a public figure and therefore needs to disclose his health information aren't quite on target. He's not an elected official. He's not overseeing something of consequence to the general public. His finger is not on the button. He's a football coach, plain and simple. And I do think a person in his position is due some level of privacy with regards to his health.
I can't tell you how many people have sent me something in the past month saying they've "heard something" about Beamer's condition being serious, although there's an element of the telephone game at play here, I think. What we've been told is that he developed an unspecified problem with his throat last fall, delayed surgery until right after the regular season and has been recovering since, needing to do therapy to get his voice back. He's 68, so I'd guess you don't simply bounce back from a surgery like that all too quickly. All indications are that he'll be back up to full speed come spring.
Could it be more serious than that? I honestly hate to even speculate. I do know that it wouldn't be unprecedented for a school to suppress that kind of information. Florida State's Bobby Bowden admitted to keeping his treatment for prostate cancer under wraps in 2007 because of a sad reality in college football: teams would use it against the Seminoles in recruiting. I'm in no way saying that's what's happening with Virginia Tech, but there is a precedent for it.
The bottom line in all of this is none of us are doctors, even though everyone likes to play one whenever they hear a surgery took place. Unless I get some firm, indisputable information that something more is going on than what the school has said -- and to this point, it's all been, "Word on the street is ...," which certainly does not qualify -- I'll believe what Tech is telling everyone

Possible reasons for his actions:
1) Is he wearing an adult diaper and he figure why not, but it isn't going as easily as he thought it would.
2) He is definitely having a mini-seizure.
Regardless, he scared that crap out of that little girl.
