First ever chance to defend Whoopi, so I'm going to.

A person can no longer have a perfectly defensible opinion without being censored for it, if it runs counter to the tribal police. There was nothing anti Semitic about her view that the holocaust's roots were more in humanity itself than in any one manifestation of it like racism. The psyche of the German people at that time, the post WWI actions that led to it, the mental illness of Hitler and his paranoid motivations that led to his success ... all that stirred together to focus underlying hatred onto Jews.
One could argue that racism is not even a thing, but a manifestation of more foundational dysfunctions. True or not, that would be very legit discussion. But one can't dare to go there.
Would be fun to take some joy in seeing Whoopi being subjected to what she helped create. I think I'll actually do that for a while .... okay, enough of that. Even if it's her own chickens returning home, no one should be censored for honest and well intentioned thoughts, wrong or not.
I am disappointed in her that she bent to it so quickly with apologies for doing nothing wrong. By doing so, she's merely adding to the tribal tyranny. But she was already doing that, so that is just her being her.

any comment on the Holocaust. And never use the word, period. Maybe just a quick shudder and, "it was horrific" if it comes up and you have to respond. Look how many people end up saying something that turns into a big stink, even if it's accurate or well-intentioned.

How many more should there be?

Without equivocation, I say it was the most extreme negative adjective I can think of most extreme negative noun I can think of in the history of the world.
Prove me wrong.

I just don’t understand how the people in this country became so emotionally weak over words. Whether it be politicians, celebrities, or your dang neighbor , we only give them power when we become so sensitive to words. Someone say something mean, racist, etc? Get over it. Grow a set America.

One side of my family is Jewish. I didn't see anything wrong with what she stated. I also never thought of Jewish being a race. I viewed it as a religion. She said the Jews weren't persecuted due to race. I agree.

He found Jews as unclean and he calls them a race
In the statement, he defined the Jews as a race and not a religious community, characterized the effect of a Jewish presence as a “race-tuberculosis of the peoples,” and identified the initial goal of a German government to be discriminatory legislation against Jews. The “ultimate goal must definitely be the removal of the Jews altogether.”

Jews were an “alien race” that fed off the host nation, poisoned its culture, seized its economy, and enslaved its workers and farmers. The Nazis claimed that “race mixing” through marriage weakened Germany.

It's odd. I wonder what he thought of the Jewish people of other races. Like the Hispanic Jews for example. He probably didn't think too deeply about it.

a book about the holocaust that was banned in Tennessee. Clearly, Whoppi hadn't read the book because the epigraph of the book has this quote from Hitler,"The Jews are undoubtedly a race, but they are not human."
I don't think she should have been suspended, but she was clearly wrong. The sad thing is this is probably taking away from the more important story of Maus being banned in Tennessee.

I would go against my company telling me to create some software and create a totally different one.
And to be honest, Whoopi's situation aint free speech either. She said it on company time. Thats her companies speech, not hers.
Not if she said that on twitter, that'd be a different matter. They could still fire her, but i dont see them as apple to apple.
Regardless, my point is, people(the left specifically) is trying to control speech by getting them fired.
The answer to bad speech is more speech. I support whoopi here tho. The left if finally getting a taste or their own medicine tho. Hopefully they'll wake up to what they've been doing, but i doubt it.

It's a meaningless social construct intended only to put people in convenient boxes. It means nothing.
I don't believe having a certain skin color, or being from a certain part of the globe, makes anyone a different "race," any more than having a certain eye color, or height, or diet.

some identifying dna, but anyone can be Jewish, or opt out. But because she was referring to the holocaust, what matters is how it was applied then. I don't know how they were identified. If one claimed to not be, my guess is that they looked at birth records.
So, was holocaust racial, ethnic or religious? If I had to check a box I would say religious. But to Whoopi everything is racial. Except this one time she dared to say it wasn't.

Only believe racism is perpetuated by whites against blacks and browns. And for that simplistic view, Whoopi can burn.

responding to OP. I agree. Cancel culture needs to go away. What she said seemed not terrible - much less offensive than many other things she has said in the past.
But, not feeling too sorry for her...
