Articles on why suicide rates are up....

Jun 9, 2018, 10:40 AM

Seem to never acknowledge one blatant thing. Prescription meds.

The measurements over 17 years showing a 30% rise. Then they start talking guns. I get it. More suicides by guns than any other. That seems like the most likely in my opinion. But, how come every commercial will spit out disclaimers of suicidal thoughts, and not think they correlate, when the rise of meds is documented to have also risen drastically in that same time? I would wonder if the rise in prescription meds charts closer to suicides rising versus gun ownership or whatever...

I've battled depression. It's not fun. Meds can worsen or help, depending on the individual it seems. I've probably experienced both, medically and emotionally induced depression. Not too much different, except the added fog of meds. Just funny no one else mentions the meds in my opinion.

Anthony B....

Hung himself. Chris C. By drugs. Kate Spade hung herself. Brother in law hung himself. No guns in any of these suicides.

To expound....

Jun 9, 2018, 11:07 AM

Bri in law had bad health. This led to his depression. Plus alcohol was his only drug. It lead to his downward spiral and eventual suicide. We missed the signs. He never mentioned being suicidal. My wife found him in the garage. Hung himself.

I personally have fought depression. Never had suicidal thoughts. Never thought it was a way out. I took the doctor's meds. They may or may not have helped. It felt sometimes like there was someone sitting on my chest. Holding me down. I talked frequently with friends that were good listeners plus I am very strong willed. It wasn't the drugs. I quit taking them. This is what I credit getting me through and over the depression. I own many guns. Never considered using one.

I know now how to recognize the signs. Getting someone to call the hot lines doesn't work if they don't want it. They have to help themself basically. Or seek help themselves. It was a difficult battle for me (depression). I am blessed for the love and support I received.

3 liberals not using a gun is also not surprising. I own guns, and also needy thought of using one. Ever.

My point is the media needing to mention them, but not the obvious. Why? I could be wrong entirely, and have no issue with that. I just think meds, now primarily opioid use, are ruining good people. Doctors only give more to treat a side effect, versus measuring the overall diminished capacity of an individual from using those drugs. Just keep feeding them, and making that money. Yet, the only lawsuits are class action things that never Seem to make much difference.

Also, sorry about your personal loss and first hand experience. I've had a few family members and friends take their lives. I can't give you one good answer why any of them choose that route.....

Knew a girl in high school. Was at a party at her house

Jun 9, 2018, 12:26 PM [ in reply to Anthony B.... ]

once. She was wild and freaky, in a good sort of way as I recall. But at the party at her house I was using the bathroom. When I came out my friend told me that her father put a 12 gauge shotgun in his mouth sitting on that toilet I just used and killed himself. She was 12 years old at the time. I never knew. I once saw a guy knocked out cold for picking on her because of her weight once. I immediately knew why after learning her story. Very sad.

Meds help anxiety, but not depression

Jun 9, 2018, 12:22 PM

But often the meds that help anxiety worsen depression and the two often go together.

But if you've ever had a panic attack, you know that it has to be treated. Meds can help those kind of problems. But depression is just like panic attacks really, just knowing you're having a panic attack and not dying or something, and knowing the triggers, is enough to end them. Same goes for depression. Knowing you're depressed, and why, is the key to getting over it, meds notwithstanding. At the end of the day, it's all in your head and the solution also lies in your head. Just knowing is half the battle. Meds help, but don't cure.

As for meds being the cause for the rise, I'd say the internet and especially social media are just as much, or more to blame.

Not sure what you're basing that on....

Jun 10, 2018, 9:39 AM

but I do not believe that statement to be accurate.

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I have suffered panic attacks.

Jun 11, 2018, 9:50 AM

They enter the mind as a sudden understand that something is wrong. Then the body reacts to the mind's excitement. Adrenaline makes the mind race to seek a solution which triggers more adrenaline. It spirals upward and outward. Recognition that something isn't wrong is the quick fix though it is often a difficult.

My mother had these attacks and ended up alone on a mountain fearing mexicans were going to rape her if the deer didn't break in her house and eat her first. I work on my car whether it needs it or not.

I'm sorry to hear that, but I'm not sure what that...

Jun 11, 2018, 1:32 PM

has to do with my post?

I'm sorry for not keeping up.

I believed my comment supported the theme of this thread jack.

Pretty sure this is 99% incorrect.

The only true part of your statement being "I'd say the internet and especially social media are just as much, or more to blame."

I was prescribed an antidepressant years ago when

Jun 9, 2018, 12:29 PM

going through a rough time. I was having trouble sleeping and was told I was suffering from anxiety and depression (and I may very well have been). About a week after starting the meds I started to feel really weird and more anxious and depressed than before. I called my doc and he encouraged me to give it time, saying that what I was experiencing was not unusul as the medicine was just building up in my body and assured me these symptoms would subside and go away completely in time. Reluctantly, I agreed to tough it out. Two days later the symptoms has only gotten worse - I felt horribly depressed, and anxious, like I was coming out of my skin. I left work and called my wife, told her I was going crazy. I told her something was bad wrong and that I was quitting the meds; she agreed that I should. Within 24 hours, I started to feel better, and 2 days after that I felt like a million dollars - no deppression, no anxiety, just happy to feel normal again. I've know other people who got much worse after starting antidepressants and only got better when changing to a different med or ditching the meds altogether.

Bottom line, antidepressants work great for some people, and are true life-savers. They are not without side-effects, however, and don't affect everybody the same. They can be down right catastrophic, I believe, for some people.

Meds for the mind are trial and error.

Jun 11, 2018, 9:57 AM

They are indeed hit or miss and when they miss people suffer more than they would had they worked it out without the drugs complicating their illness. Some people will end up homeless or dead without medication.

You handled it right.

I have no experience with antidepressants or anxiety meds

Jun 11, 2018, 9:59 AM

but I have seen first hand what different ADD/ADHD meds will do to a kid. That family eventually just took the kid off the meds cause the kid was a zombie.

Side note, I am the only person in my family (parents & brothers) that does not take a daily medication for either depression, adhd, or anxiety. I am also the only one who exercises regularly. I have no idea if those correlate, but I like to think they do. I am also fearful of what will EVENTUALLY happen to me.

which ADHD med(s)?

Jun 11, 2018, 10:06 AM

LilGUAR#2 is just about off-the-charts ADHD, but we're holding off on meds (for now, at least) in favor of some dietary measures

Couple different ones in different doses. Everything made

Re: which ADHD med(s)?

brothergood took Adderal XR through most of school. Went from C's and D's to straight A's when he started it. He hated the loss of appetite and "coming down" feeling he got every night so my parents let him go off of it. Back to C's and D's almost immediately.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

LilGUAR#2 (well, bofe, actually) are killin' it in school

Jun 11, 2018, 1:41 PM

granted, it was just kindergarten....but there was marked improvement over the course of the year once it was (officially) diagnosed, made some simple dietary changes (minimal High Fructose corn syrup, and ramp up the omega 3's...nothing crazy), and got the teachers on board. We'll see how 1st grade goes for a while before we even talk about meds again

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I can testify that staying busy prevents my panic attacks.

Why do you think I'd tackle putting a diesel engine in a gas body, restoring the finishes on the gas car and risking its utility and ruining the diesel body by stripping the best parts?

If I quit work I'll be licking the xanax within a week.

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-10yr.jpgringofhonor-clemsontiger1988-110.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

It's a reasonable point, but one than can be analysed....

Jun 10, 2018, 9:38 AM

from both sides.

For instance, I wonder what the current rate would be without all of the advances in Psychotropic drugs? I think a case could be made that the suicide rate would be much higher.

Not claiming to know the answer or the underlying cause, but I do know it's a very complicated subject.

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I blame social media

Jun 11, 2018, 9:37 AM

Pretty much for everything, but that too.

The drug companies run the media

Jun 11, 2018, 2:29 PM

You'll never hear about what prescription drugs these mass shooters are on because the media will be in fear of losing millions of dollars in revenue from advertising.
