Article makes fair points about linemen sizes and CU

Dec 26, 2013, 4:36 PM

We've been outsized by a number of opponents but size clearly doesn't tell the whole story - well, except maybe for FSU.

http://www.wltx.com/sports/article/259662/4/Tigers-to-Face-Massive-Offensive-Line-Against-Ohio-State

Some key quotes:
"Size does matter, but it certainly is not the lone component of dominance. The average weight of Wake Forest's line is 307 pounds, yet Wake is ranked 116th in the FBS in rushing."

And immediately following:
"This season, Clemson faced massive, physical offensive lines against Boston College (302.4 pounds), Florida State (317.4) and South Carolina (322.4). Clemson averaged nine tackles for loss and 3.3 sacks through those games."

Some who post here regularly see us as doomed unless we start getting "SEC size" linemen on both sides. I see it as much a matter of caliber as size, and think we are improving both at a steady pace.

Flame away guys who think all that counts is getting the massive "5 star" guys who routinely pass us by.

I thought you preferred pancake house waitresses?

We don't have a size problem on our lines

The whole "SEC size lines" thing is a silly myth

To be fair there isn't but a handful of offensive linemen that are 5*, maybe 2 or 3 max per year. There are, I think, 119 FBS programs vying for those young men which means we're not the only one not getting those high profile linemen. Personally I like to think our coaching staff knows what they are doing when they offer a young man a scholley and that young man stands for what our coaches think a young Clemson Tiger should. On top of that I like the young man that has had to bust his butt and has that chip on his shoulder, like Grady Jarrett a man who was I think a 2 star recruit with a chip and something to prove and now when opposing coaches study our defensive tape they want to know where number 50 is at all times. I would take Jarrett over anybody and all these national pundits missed big time by leaving him off all post season accolades list, including the ACC which should be a (d)amn crime....
