What was wrong

Oct 11, 2020, 10:47 AM

With the spike auburn did yesterday? I understand it was a fumbled snap but he regains possession before spiking the ball to stop the clock. Can you not spike it after a fumbled snap or something? Anyways GO TIGERS!!!

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Watch Trevor do it, he spikes it in front of him.

That player turned around and spiked it. So they were saying it was a backwards pass which would be a fumble. Not saying they are right or wrong but that I think was the argument.

The QB threw a lateral. After fumbling it he gained control of the ball but had turned to where his back was to the defense - then spiked the then "live ball"!
The way I understand it - had he been facing the defense it would have been okay.

Not so fast HillRock . . .

The snap must be handled cleanly to stop the clock by spiking the ball.

Once it was fumbled, the latitude to spike the ball is out of play. Had the QB been facing the defense after recovering the fumble when he spiked it, the refs should have called intentional grounding. Since he spiked it backwards, it is a lateral and is a loose ball. The zebras blew the call.

The Hogs got “sec hosed” big time!!!

I am not sure how a spiked ball is "backwards" He was facing backwards but he did not throw it backwards.

It was a backwards pass which is considered to be a fumble. Since the throw was behind him then obviously it was a backwards pass.

Fumbled snap and then spiked it backwards as in a backwards pass IMO it was a fumble. But SEC had plenty of explanation as to why it was not.

On that play, one of the offensive guards had an offensive
lineman in a choke hold from behind. Ref was right in front
of it and no flag.

Why was a Allbarn OL choking another Allbarn OL?

You are correct. It was an obvious call that the refs missed. Should have been a 10 yard penalty, making the FG longer.

But, just like with the spike, the refs were anticipating a spike and were looking at what they expected to see rather than actually looking at what happened.

military_donation.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Per the announcers "replay official", no, you cannot spike

Oct 11, 2020, 11:28 AM

the ball after a fumbled snap. He said that it should have been judged a backwards pass. So, should have been a live ball which Arky could recover.

Or, since you can't legally spike a fumbled snap, if it was deemed a FORWARD pass, should have been intentional grounding. That would have been loss of down, and also would have resulted in a 10 second runoff of time if Aubarn didn't have a TO left. That would have ended the game.

Arkansas just flat out got screwed out of that win, pure and simple. Someday there will be a result that is enough of an error that the league office would overturn the result. This one should be it.

runoff for int grounding

In the very least, because he fumbled the snap, it should have been intentional grounding. 15 yard penalty and loss of down.
SUC trying to keep Auburn in the mix. Pitiful... SUC... it just means more.

Another question on that play

Oct 11, 2020, 12:18 PM

Why in the world are they spiking the ball with 28 seconds left to make it 4th down to set up a potential game winning kick? What’s the logic of saving so much time on the clock?

And yes, Ark got hosed. At best they would’ve recovered the backward pass, at worst Auburn would’ve recovered it 5 yards farther back and would’ve had to scuttle their FG team out with a running clock.

At the end of the day, SVP announced last night

Oct 11, 2020, 12:30 PM

SEC Ref Commission got together on Saturday and decided they blew the call, but since ARK Defense never made a "sufficient effort" to recover the fumble, the refs had no other option other than return the ball to AUB.

Re: What was wrong

Oct 11, 2020, 6:51 PM

Two different things going on.

1. If you fumble the snap, you cannot spike the ball without a penalty. That is the rule. If you do, it is intential grouncding, a penalty.

2. And, here is where the confusion began. When you spike the ball it has to be a "forward pass." It cannot be a "lateral" or a backward pass.

The Auburn QB fumbled the snap, then he spiekd the ball, but he spiked it backwards. The ref should not have blown the whistle. He should have let the play continue. The ball was live just as it would have been if he had thrown it to a player in the flats, like you see teams do when they try to run a trick play with a double pass.

But, the ref assumed it was going to be a spike. He anticipated the spike and he blew his whistle based on what he expected to see.
