As a Clemson Basketball fan since the 60s, I would suggest
Nov 21, 2021, 7:47 PM
[ in reply to Re: Brad apologized to his players what happened... ] |

that the fan excitement has been there in the past, but has been taken for granted for quite some time in spite of a rising tide in Clemson Athletics.
The athletic department should take more responsibility for fan interest. Ultimately, you must put a product on the floor that causes people to want to watch.
We've had that before. We can have it again.

Exactly!! I get so sick of the argument about fan support … it’s an ignorant argument at best. Admittedly I haven’t been around for a ton of basketball but while i was a student during the OP days LJ was rocking and one of the toughest places to play in the country … so I get tired of hearing that excuse , like you said produce a product and we show up … we are 11 years into this thing and there’s a reason nobody has been knocking the door down to hire him away. Only argument that I agree with is the admin doesn’t care about basketball… I can agree with that bc if they did there’s no way BB would still be here. I still pull for em and always will but games like the last two have become the expected at this point and that sucks!

This.
This why Brad has had his buyout dwindle down on any contract extensions. He cut out his golf media outing this season that Clemson has had for football and basketball for years not including last year for the COVID year. Brad is losing his biggest supporters and that why it could be close to ending.
You have to initiate your fans.

Ha that’s so funny, I have a 10 and Clemson basketball game since the Cliff Ellis days. Watched us get blown out by Virginia, lose to Florida State, get bludgeoned by Duke. Supported every coach along the way, loved Rick Barnes , gave Larry shy at the benefit of the doubt. Purnell doesn’t get nearly enough credit for what he did for Clemson. Been watching Brownell for over a decade now and this is the same thing every year. Program is completely stuck in neutral

You want him to apologize to the fans? Like the 100 that were there?
Get over yourself. He should be pissed off at our fans for having to play 2 road games in our home state to teams from up north.

I don't know that he needs to apologize for a coaching error
Nov 23, 2021, 9:10 AM
|
|
but I do know that this can't be his mindset: That the only people that matter are the ones that showed up. That he doesn't owe the fans that didn't show up anything.
It's hard to dispute the fact that college basketball and football salaries are obscenely high by almost any measurement except pure supply-and-demand. But some of the ethical justification comes from the idea that those two sports create a face for the program more than anything else the school does. Also, the head coach owns ALL of it. And that includes creating an atmosphere that compels individuals of varying degrees of affiliation with that school to spend their hard-earned money and precious free time supporting the program he leads. He can do that with personality, with wins, with hope, with outreach...I dunno, with all sorts of things. But what he doesn't have the luxury of doing...with his $2.6 million dollars per year...is dismissing Clemson sports fans who have lost interest as if that's THEIR problem.

I mean, I agree with what a lot of you said, but fans demanding an apology from brownell are absurd. He owned the mistake. Let's move on.
Coaches make mistakes quite frequently. Does he need to go through a list of apologies before every press conference?

I google searched for where Brownell made a call to Clemson fans to fill up TD Arena in Charleston (capacity 5,100) and can't seem to find any reference to this. Perhaps if he were to engage with the fan base more in promoting his team he might see more support in the stands? Maybe he mentioned it but wasn't quoted in any articles written on it.
Still not surprising in the least that northern fan bases would flock to Charleston, SC in the fall to catch some b-ball, food, and fun like they did.
Go Tigers!

He’s commented many times during his tenure

about the importance of our fans showing up and being loud, and what a difference that makes.
A supportive fan base doesn’t wait to be asked by the coach to show up. They show up on their own, because they care and because they know it’s important.
Do you think the St. Bonaventure coach or the West Virginia coach had to ask fans to please pretty please come support them? Of course not.

If Brownell is frustrated with fan turnout for games, wherever they may be, and if that turnout has been ebbing away over time, and the lack of turnout affects his team's ability to win games, then absolutely the $3+ million a year head coach should be out pimping the program to fans to turn out and cheer hard. Being a head coach comes with a lot of responsibilities. That's why they make the big bucks.
I care about giving to Clemson. Should the Alumni Association stop reaching out to remind me to re-up each year? Or should they sit back and let my 'caring' be the sole motivator and hope that's enough? If the program were winning more and generating more organic coverage in wider media, that could help cover a lot of the promotion and awareness.
Re-read above for answer to your last sentence.

to watch our basketball team play a tournament in sunny Florida to escape the cold fall/winter weather in SC.
I know it makes you and others feel better to portray those other fan bases as cold and bored, and thus eager to travel to Charleston to see a game, but the reality is that those fans did it because they love and support their team.
Admit it, our fans simply don’t care enough about Clemson basketball to be that devoted to it. Blaming the coach for not asking the fans to show up is a cop out.

I certainly agree that your boy Brownell does little to inspire or motivate the fan base. You are right on target there.
Here's something funny (not funny). I read a St. Bonaventure season preview article and it mentions the tournament in Charleston. It lists a lot of the teams that would be there as potential opponents to get motivated for and Clemson isn't one of them mentioned. An ACC team in a pre-season tournament, and nada. Ole Miss, Temple, Marquette, WVa - yep. We don't even inspire our opponents. Nuts.

penalties had taken away any chance we had of winning the game, AFTER we blew a big lead in the second consecutive game, after a repeated history of losing such games, then you can rest assured there would be howls about coaching changes.
I don't think you really want to get into comparing the football and basketball programs at Clemson from a discipline standpoint. Dabo's teams made a living for the past six years being more disciplined than the opposition. The fact that we have NOT been at times this year is a contributing factor to this relatively disappointing season. But, if you watched the last couple of games, the team has gotten much better at that, as well. Coaching made a change.
Judge, I am sorry that I cannot still be on the Brownell bandwagon with you. I have just seen the same old, same old, too many times now. However great Brad supposedly is at x's and O's, he loses all that knowledge at the end of games, if the game is close.Somebody must be hiding his clipboard.
It is about like some former Notre Dame players said about that 1988 National Championship. They said they won it DESPITE having Granny Holtz as coach, not because of him. That is the way I feel about Brad Brownell at this point. I see enough athletes on the floor that could be so much more than what they will be, under his tutelage. Just to list a couple of our former coaches, I believe that Barnes or Ellis would do more, much more, with what we have.
We'll just have to agree to disagree. Doesn't mean I won't continue to root for us to win basketball games. It just means I will be surprised more if it happens.

It’s obviously not exactly the same
Nov 23, 2021, 4:48 PM
|

since football has 11 players on the field and basketball has 5 on the court. Substitution patterns are obviously different. Duh.
But the concepts are obviously the same. One player comes out, another goes in. And sometimes communication breaks down.
The point is that if it’s a huge coaching blunder in basketball to have an extra player out there, then it should also be a huge coaching blunder to have an extra football player out there.
But of course, on TNet that’s a ludicrous idea, because Dabo has never made a mistake and thus a substitution error for Clemson football is no big deal. For Clemson basketball, it cost us the game and our entire season, and Brownell should be fired immediately.

Nope, still not close. I refer you to my previous answer to this ridiculous comparison below. And I'll also add that 12 players are allowed on the field in football, as they are running on and off while the clock is running. Heck you can have 17 out there, as long as they aren't between the hashes/huddle and 6 get off before the snap. It is very commonplace in football to get "caught" in substitutions. Great quarterbacks do it all the time. Surely you also understand the complexity of changing 11 personnel depending on the situation in live game, live clock mode. It's not even close to screwing counting to 5 on a dead ball out of a time out.
Football players run on and off the field between plays all game long. 12 men happens even to Super Bowl winning teams.
Basketball players only enter the game when specifically subbed in during a stoppage of play and must check in with the scorer's table. It's much more controlled. But, you already know that.
Once again, your comparisons of apples to oranges to support mediocrity is ludicrous.
