Not sports related but I want to warn my tiger family

Mar 8, 2015, 8:47 PM

If you ever find yourself in the hospital and someone tries to put you on metroplol or lorazepam , make really dang sure that's what's best for you or the nightmare of dealing with these meds are insane. They each have their uses and can be very helpful but be very careful with them their consequences.

I've had several brushes with life n death the past two weeks. I don't want to wish this on anyone. Love u guys

What kind of problems did these drugs cause?

It would take forever to explain everything that took place but just make sure it's for u before you go down that road. And u cannot quit either of these drugs cold turkey. If you try to, you are going to pay dearly. So if you are on one and you can find an alternative drug that's equally suited for you, work closely with a very experienced doctor when weening this drugs.

I have never had to call ambulance for myself not one time in 42 years but in two weeks, I had to twice. Granted, those drugs didn't cause the first scenario but second was very scary. Lots of complications. Just be aware and be well educated to both their advantages and disadvantages.

I've taken metoprolol on and off for a couple of years with no problems.

Lorazepam was only ingested due to large doses of carboplatin and taxol (FU 5) and it was much more pleasant than those two.....and I hope never again. Yuck.

Metoprolol is a beta-blocker...they end in lol

Mar 8, 2015, 9:52 PM

It lowers BP.

Lorazepam (Ativan) is a benzo....benzos can have nasty side effects but beta blockers are generally regarded as safe. Propanolol is even given for stage fright...

Hope all is well and for a speedy recovery ;)

Re: Metoprolol is a beta-blocker...they end in lol

Mar 9, 2015, 3:00 PM

I would echo the fact that Beta Blockers are safe for most people , but not all people. There are some very , very wicked side effects related to Metoprolol for some people. I have have first hand knowledge. There is a reaction that can cause debilitating depression. It can take a type A outgoing and strong person and absolutely mess them up.

Again, I am sure all these drugs are good for some/most people, but I for one can't tolerate beta -blockers at all! Neither could my father

Ativan is a benzodiazepene.. in my intensive care, we only use this class of meds for alcohol withdrawal and seizures. They are widely prescribed, but i agree with their neg potential..

But..

Metoprolol??? Correct, beta blocker used for bp and heart rate control. Esp effective class of meds for any folks with congestive heart failure or cardiomyopathy. In 10 years of practice, I've never heard of anyone with issues or the need to taper off. Lisinipril or other ACE inhibitors can create issues, but Metoprolol?

If you are willing, id love for you to tmail me or post here and tell me the issue.

Most importantly, i hope you are well now.

What are the issues with Lisinipril? I've been taking that for quite a few years now.

military_donation.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Lisinopril is notorious for causing an

Mar 9, 2015, 1:55 PM

uncomfortable dry and hacking cough.. sometimes an irritating throat tickle. Its actually called an ACE cough.

More importantly, people can develop angioedema.. a swelling of the lips and tongue resulting in a medical emergency that may result in a breathing tube being placed to protect the trachea/airway from swelling shut. It happens randomly and anytime, even if you've been on it for years. It is uncommon, and you should take your meds, but be aware. If the swelling response does occur, with med managemnet it will resolve in a couple of days and you will never take that drug again.

Hope that helps :)

Thankfully; the only thing I've ever experienced, was the tickle cough, and I can't for sure attribute it to the Lisinopril.

Thanks for the reply,Soywalker.

Been on BP medication about 10 years now. Tried diuretic first and did not tolerate well. Tried Lisinopril...worked great for 8 months and then developed a very slight, random, ticklish cough.
Tried Metoprolol next. This worked the best at controlling bp and also had a calming effect. But after 3 weeks I started feeling tiny electric impulses to my heart. Dr did have me discontinue gradually (3 or 4 days) off of that. Tried Enalopril next and it appears to do the job with no major side effects for me.

experience.

In 2000 I had my last heart attack. It damaged me enough that they put me on toprol XL 50 mg, two per day. I also took a light dose of nerve meds. I became so depressed the doctor dropped me to 50 mg/da which helped a great deal.

I think the dosage just knocked the wind from my sails. I do not believe it was a 'side effect,' I think it might happen to everyone according to their physiology and dose.

You could be right, but they got me off it pretty quickly. I am a very high energy type "A" person. I, at the time, was travelling about 60% of the time. East to west coast. I had never had an issue with the travel. I got to where I couldn't get through an airport and could not sleep , I just wanted to crawl under a chair and sleep.
