Trump “giving medical advice” is wrong!

Apr 7, 2020, 9:22 PM

From the same people who :

Act like Bill Nye is a scientist.

Pretend Al Gore was a climate expert.

Think Bill Gates is a doctor.

And a 16yr old is a climate change expert.

He’s trained as an ME. That’s what he got a degree in.

Apr 7, 2020, 11:35 PM [ in reply to No, he once worked as one. ]

He’s never actually worked as a scientist as far as I can tell. He received a BS in ME and then started working as an ME for Boeing.

This interesting tidbit from his Wikipedia site:
“In 1986, Nye left Boeing to pursue comedy, writing and performing jokes and bits for the local sketch television show Almost Live!, where he regularly conducted wacky science experiments. Nye aspired to become the next Mr. Wizard, and with the help of several producers, successfully pitched the children's television program Bill Nye the Science Guy to KCTS-TV, Seattle's public television station.”

So science was his means to an entertainment gig, basically.

I mean, put credence in his opinions or not, I don’t really care. The extent of his FORMAL scientific training, beyond the obligatory physics and chemistry that any ME would take, is one Astronomy elective he took. He’s a trained ME...turned entertainer...who now is a passionate activist for science education and other social issues. Call that a scientist if you want...seems a bit of a stretch.

So a person is locked into their college degree...

Apr 8, 2020, 9:26 AM

And can't branch out into other fields?

He doesn't use the scientific process?

And finally, looks like some people in this thread think they're more knowledgeable than scientists when it comes to climate change and coronavirus.

Memphis and xtiger practically think they're scientists.

DOES he use “the scientific method”!?! How would you know?

Apr 8, 2020, 9:43 AM

This is ridiculous. If you didn’t agree with the guy you would absolutely demolish him for his lack of credentials. You don’t have to deny or agree. I have been on the board long enough to know I am correct.

So what makes a scientist?

Someone who has credentialed studies in a science? I guess not.

Someone who has been employed in a scientific field to conduct scientific studies? No, I guess not.

Someone who has used science on their own to create something? Waaaait...we might be on to something...according to Wikipedia, Bill Nye has three patents:
One for ballet shoes
One for a magnifying glass using a plastic bag filled with water
One for a training device to help athletes throw a ball.

Well, there you go! This guy is basically a PhD in “Science”!

Re: DOES he use “the scientific method”!?! How would you know?

Apr 8, 2020, 10:02 AM

Who said I "agree" with the guy? I pay very little attention to what he said. I know why y'all are so opposed to him. Oh no, he speaks the truth on climate change! Let's attack him!

I'm asking y'all what makes someone a scientist. Your college degree doesn't lock you in to what you are. Is Jane Goodall a scientist? Did you know she doesn't have a college degree?

Look how much you're getting your panties in a wad over this. I mean, ####, you even point out the man has three patents for inventions. That doesn't qualify?

You tell me what the exact criteria is for being a "scientist" since I can read the agitation coming out of your post.

Sigh. I’m sure you can read the agitation, so let me take a breath.

Apr 8, 2020, 10:22 AM

First, I also have no strong opinions on Bill Nye’s positions on things.

Second, I have no objection to someone placing value on his opinion or not. I think credentials are important, and so is experience. Heck, so is a track record of thoughtful and insightful commentary (a la Charles Krauthammer).

My only objection is to define him as a scientist. And if you consider him a scientist because of his career...fine. I haven’t read your link below but I’ll say this...a degree in a scientific field would add credibility (I can relate. I have an ME degree but do not work as an ME, so I nuance it when people ask if I’m an engineer...yes, in that I can speak to the training, thought process and broad concepts of engineering, but no as I have not practiced the discipline beyond that). A career employed as an actual scientist, that too would help. This is the Jane Goodall example. She spent her career in scientific study of her subject. Nye went from ME, to entertainer, to activist. And no...patents do not make you a scientist.

Anyway, as you’ve pointed out, I’m too wound up on this semantic argument. If you consider him a scientist, fine by me. It will be the first time you and I have EVER disagreed on something. :)

That's just it. What defines him as being or not being a scientist?

What about a teacher who teaches science? Do they qualify or not?

Sure, a degree or a specific research career would add credibility. But does that disqualify him?

What’s your answer to that question?

Apr 8, 2020, 10:46 AM

No, a science teacher is not a scientist based on the fact that they teach science.

Put simply, if you are credentialed in a scientific field or employed to conduct scientific research...or operate independently in a scientific pursuit (which is rare and again, parenting ballet shoes does not qualify), you could make the argument.

That’s my answer. Yours is different. That’s fine.

Re: What’s your answer to that question?

Apr 8, 2020, 1:15 PM

Seems to me someone who delves into science, educates himself more on science, tries to teach science, uses the scientific method, etc., has claim to be called as such. And inventing something/patenting it involves research.

But I guess that's fine if we have different definitions. I'll also assume your reasons for your definition aren't devious like xtiger's.

Apr 8, 2020, 10:00 AM

Or don't understand what engineering is, or both.

2024 white level memberbadge-donor-20yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I have never heard an engineer say they were a scientist

Apr 8, 2020, 11:31 AM

nor a scientist say that engineering was science. And I did get a degree in engineering and have worked in engineering offices. The disciplines are unique and separate.

Again, never ever once has an engineer that I have known say “and as an engineer, I am of course also a scientist”. I think practitioners of both disciplines would find the idea insulting.

Are you either an engineer or a scientist? Have you ever heard such a thing. I’m actually laughing at the idea of an engineer introducing themselves as Scientists.

What percentage of engineering is based in science?

Apr 8, 2020, 12:25 PM

You're talking about semantics. Of course there are differences, but it's more like saying a chemist is not a biologist.

The argument on this thread though is that an engineer is not qualified to speak on science. An engineer is absolutely trained in science.

2024 white level memberbadge-donor-20yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

The statement alone is absurd.

Apr 8, 2020, 12:37 PM

First, yes it is semantics, but it speaks to credentials. To say an engineer is a scientist is absurd on the surface. Would you be reasonable to assume they have a better grasp of scientific concepts than a history major, sure. But that doesn’t make them scientists. Nor is an engineer who designs a car a “mechanic”, even though their work puts them in a better position to know what’s going on with a car.

But to say “an engineer is trained in science” sounds absurd. They take courses in physics...chemistry. I can tell you that an ME takes zero courses in biology or earth sciences. There is nothing about that degree that would make their opinion more inherently credible than anyone else’s.

Anyway...Cata is correct...I’m much to wound up in this argument. Have at it. Engineers are scientists. I’m an author because I post on Tigernet. I’m going to Step away from my desk so I can be a chef for an hour for lunch.

I would say any engineer in the R&D field would be a

Apr 8, 2020, 2:48 PM

scientist. So Bill Nye working at Boeing in the R&D group would count as a scientist in my book. Just like an EE working at Cree for LED R&D. That, and there are environmental engineers in my company that have their PE but are labeled as scientists.

There's some significant overlap in engineering and science, so it's a weird thing to get pedantic on.
