Anyone see the ESPN article...

Aug 4, 2022, 10:31 AM

that suggests moving bowl games to the beginning of the season which would effectively eliminate opt outs by players on teams that did not make the CFP. It would also make the first week of the season A LOT more interesting and entertaining with much better match-ups.

Interesting read.

The only way I would have any interest in playing pre-season bowls would be matchups with teams that have never faced each other. Maybe get us a game with Michigan, UCLA, Washington, Oregon, Arkansas, Texas, Navy, Michigan State or Oklahoma St. That’s the only ones I can think of off the top of my head.

So basically this is an expansion of the kickoff classic neutral site games to be played on “week zero”? I don’t completely dislike it, but December would have to become college playoff month with separate playoffs for FCS, P5, and G5.

I think the one person hit it right on the nail - get people in the room and spitball it is right. I think you need some postseason rewards for teams who finish well...otherwise what are you playing for? But I think you need to fix the scholarship numbers (haven't increased any since schedules moved from 10 to 11 to now 14-15 games). Need bump to 100. And travel rosters from 72 to 85 like during Covid. Keeps guys healthier for these longer seasons - more quality depth on hand.

That’s interesting but I don’t think it would work. I think the best move for everyone in college football, not just the blue chip programs would be to extend the regular season to 14 games.

Then have a 3 or 4 team conference playoff that ultimately leads to a 6 or 8 team CFP.

But bowl season is dead

That would equate to all SEC teams in a bowl game. That includes Vandy, USuC, and Missouri.

I think Vandy opens with Elon this season...

Aug 4, 2022, 12:19 PM

I'd certainly rather watch Vandy play a team like Duke, Northwestern, Rutgers, Kansas, or Cal than Elon.

Not good for players or students

Aug 4, 2022, 4:21 PM

The fun of bowl games for players involves cool activities in a fun place to travel to, during a time when school is not in session. It's a reward for the season. If you put the bowls on Labor Day weekend the players are either missing a lot of school days or just having a regular away game. Classes have started for all but the quarter schools. Are the students going to want/be able to travel to some of these bowls when school has just started? Just one more way of moving college football from a college experience to a pro experience.
