Anyone know why we didn't offer Jalin Hyatt?

Oct 17, 2022, 2:44 PM

Our 2020 class included EJ Williams and Ajou Ajou.

Ajou Ajou was already committed and EJ was our #1 WR target at the time.

I'm pretty sure he was joking. That's kind of a thing on T-Net when someone makes their first post, call them a Coot. It was meant in a joking manner I feel certain.

That ship has sailed, don't beat a dead horse, and of course you can't change history. It doesn't matter now. And yes the people who recruit a great team for us know how and why they did what they did. It is their job and they do things that by and large have tended to work out well for us.

Dude. I assumed there was a REASON we didn't offer him. Like he was considered too skinny or his grades weren't the best, something like that. So, I wondered if anyone knew why our staff let him go. It wasn't that I'm criticizing any of our coaches.

BTW, you may have noticed I didn't ask your permission to pose a question. And I sure won't next time either.

Re: Anyone know why we didn't offer Jalin Hyatt?

Oct 17, 2022, 3:10 PM

He was a late qualifier academically.

At the time, Tennessee was willing to offer anybody with a pulse and then process the guys who weren't good enough in the end.

Hyatt was obviously good enough to play at Clemson, but since Clemson doesn't process guys we didn't over offer and chose to take commitments that we knew would get in to school.

We also signed pretty good players in that class and then took a flyer on Ajou as someone mentioned above.

Obviously he is better than the guys that we brought in with that class at his position, but it's hard to fault Clemson's coaches for wanting to prioritize guys that they know will qualify for college.

Scar on the other hand has absolutely no excuse for not offering him and riding it out to see if he would qualify for school.

Re: Anyone know why we didn't offer Jalin Hyatt?

Oct 17, 2022, 3:23 PM

Great question. We offered 15 WRs that year. Not sure why Hyatt wasn't one of them. Just look at what Antonio has done for this offense. Imagine having another WR with his skillset.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Honestly think we thought we were in it for much higher

Oct 17, 2022, 3:45 PM

higher rated guys like the #1 guy Julian Fleming. We had really high aspirations with that class and we were coming off classes that had guys like Tee Higgins. After all ... we were WRU for goodness sake!

We actually only took one guy from South Carolina that year ... Tyler Venables.

Scar however took EIGHT in-State guys including one WR ranked lower than Hyatt, but they did not even offer Hyatt.

There is just something off on the situation when neither Clemson or Scar make a high ranked in-state kid an offer.

I just think he let it be known he was headed out of state. But that’s certainly a guess.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

More intriguing question is why didn’t SCAR offer him?

Oct 17, 2022, 3:24 PM

Since when has SCAR ever passed on the #3 player in the state?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Anyone know why we didn't offer Jalin Hyatt?

Oct 17, 2022, 3:28 PM

Pretty sure they didn't have anymore scholarships because Hyatt wanted Clemson. I know that sounds like a smart-alecky response but it isn't. Same is true of Bama's RB whats-his-name. He wanted to play at Clemson but there was no room in the inn.

At least that's what my brother's sister's bosses wife's bookie's therapist told my IQ surgeon.

Re: Anyone know why we didn't offer Jalin Hyatt?

Oct 17, 2022, 3:32 PM

247 had him listed as a 3* and 6-2 165 lbs. there is no magic right ball which tells coaches which good HS players will transform to a superstar at the college level.

To answer your question we had commitments from more promising WRs

Clemson WR philosophy at that time didn't really focus on speed and neither did the NFL (top WR were guys like Evans, Brown, Hopkins Julio Jones, Michael Thomas). We were exceling with big bodied WR like Higgins and Ross, Williams and Cain and were recruiting their replacements for the style of play. More possession type guys who can make a catch in traffic. We don't really or at least have not recruited those kind of guys for the boundary.

I'd give the staff a pass on missing Hyatt because at that time we could still pull talent at the WR position from most regions. I didn't know he had the kind of speed he does, if the staff new about his 10.4/100 & 4.3/40 speed then they missed the boat completely. FWIW, I don't think SC offered either, if they did it was late.

I remember Scar offering and wanting him badly, but seems like he got into some kind of legal trouble and Scar backed off. Clemson was never involved.

But we’ve got our good ones from Dutch Forsyth. We have two studs right now from there

I saw him play in HS and he was very impressive. The word in football circles in Columbia was that Muschamp was on the sidelines for one of their games and Hyatt’s behavior turned him off. Story was Hyatt for mad at Ty Olenchuck who was DF Qb at the time and threw his helmet at him. Rumor said Muschamp turned around and left after it happened. Don’t know whether this was true or not, but it was a story that got repeated a lot.
I never heard about any legal trouble or him being a problem at school.
