Anyone got a contact or secret phone number at the IRS?

Aug 2, 2022, 1:07 PM

I am seeking a status update on my mother's last tax return and tax refund. By last, I mean 2020, she passed in 2020, and I had to file a paper return, complicated by the fact I'm claiming the refund as executor.

So far I have nothing for a response. The online status check repeatedly gives a " no information can be provided" message.

Every phone number I have tried is met with "...due to high call volume...", including the number to try to make an appointment at the local office.

(I can't imagine what the local appointment might be like...but I'll try anything).

So now...I'm asking the brain trust here at TigerNet!

Any thoughts?

There is probably a local office. Google and see what you

find. I know there is one in Greenville. You can just walk in.

I'm sure they'll be just as useless but it might be worth a tray.

Good suggestion. Go to the local office and let them be your boots on the ground.

Send another copy of her return in. It was probably lost.

Contact your local congressman and ask for help. Works sometimes.

FWIW, a good friend of mine retired in 2020 but overpaid

his income taxes. Therefore, he is, likewise, waiting on his return. He finally spoke with someone last week. He was told that the IRS has over 9 million paper returns still awaiting review.

Thanks for all the replies...

This one just makes me wonder if those 9 million haven't been entered at all, and that's why I get the online automated response I get.

Frustrating, but ok I guess...just keep asking I suppose.

Right now I can find no way to even "leave a message."

In 2021 (2020 tax year) and 2022 (2021 tax year), the IRS destroyed 30 million paper returns. You should probably contact the local or regional IRS.

We are almost exactly in the same spot

Aug 2, 2022, 7:50 PM

We eventually refiled.. not sure it did any good, but on the status page the IRS does show they have received the return. If we ever receive a refund we'll be thankful.
