Anyone ever made the away trip to Syracuse? Need recs

Jul 13, 2021, 9:40 PM

Looking for bars, restaurants, must-dos. We’ll have Friday afternoon and all of Saturday. Is there anything worth seeing where we’d need to rent a car? Thanks!

Yeah, I guess I should have phrased it “Where would Boeheim eat and party?”

I've been there twice and aside from the one loss, I enjoyed both trips. The 'Cuse fans tailgating were terrific. I'd never seen a professional pool table set up as a tailgate game until the last game up there! The Carrier Dome is an interesting change of pace and there does not seem to be a bad seat in the house. The 'Cuse fans like beer with their football and it's sold inside the dome in the concession areas so some guys spend a lot of time going to and from the taps. I've had zero troubles with any fans and the drinkers seemed quite accustomed to beer and so caused no trouble at all.

If you're into sight seeing in Syracuse, the Erie Canal stuff is interesting and different. We had a nice pre-game 90% Clemson crowd in a bar within walking distance for the last game, but I can't recall the name.

If you've got the time, Cooperstown is about an hour away and worth a look.

Dinasaur bbq pretty good and definitely Niagara Falls. We flew into Buffalo (hit Anchor Bar), stayed a night in Niagara and rest of trip in cuse before driving back to Buffalo

I second the dinosaur BBQ recommendation!

Yep. Just over an hour north. Alexandria Bay

Gorgeous and interesting area. It is at the eastern outlet of Lake Ontario, where the St Lawrence River begins.
Very few cfb fans up there. The Carrier Dome is a sad relic. But don’t tell them that. It pisses them off.

If you rent a car, you will most likely miss the game. Driving in NY is a dangerous task, even for the people that live there.

Type “Cuse Fan” in Tigernet’s search and see what pops up

The Krebs restaurant in nearby Skaneateles (skin-e-atlas) https://www.skaneateles.com/visit/dining is top notch, as is Elephant & the Dove. Both owned by Adam Weitsman, owner of Upstate Shredding and Recycling (https://www.architecturaldigest.com/story/john-meyer-mcalpine-booth-and-ferrier-interiors-renovation-upstate-new-york-19th-century-retreat-article)

Visiting Cuse This Fall?
If you come up be sure to reach out to the Cuse fans at www.Syracusefan.com We can give you tips on restaurants, tailgating, touristy stuff. We have a couple Clemson fans that make regular rounds through the board and are well liked. I'm part of the biggest tailgate (The Fine Mess) in the stadium west area at Syracuse and we always welcome visiting fans.

I’ve been to two games in Syracuse but have spent 26+ weeks there working over the years. There are lots of very good restaurants in and around the downtown area.

Try Pastabilities in the Armory area near the intersection of Jefferson and Clinton. There is an Italian district with 8-10 fantastic restaurants.

Campus is great. Beautiful, on a hill overlooking the city. Easy driving in the area. You may want to stay in the Liverpool area near the airport and visit Lake Onadaga Lake. Great park and walking/running area. Downtown is sketchy at night.

I've been twice. Stayed in Skaneateles both times which is a pretty village on Lake Skaneateles, one of the Finger Lakes. It was just over 30 minutes to the stadium. There are some low key restaurants/bars there. Syracuse itself isn't great. Old northern town with a declining population. Dinosaur BBQ is worth a look, but go early. It will be crowded. Agree if you have time go to Cooperstown. The Baseball HOF is impressive and it's a cool little town too. If you have extra time, there are some wineries in the Finger Lakes region and if you're into hiking-Watkins Glen has some really nice gorges to check out.

I was totally unimpressed with Syracuse, but the area is actually very nice and transitions to rolling green hills and lakes quickly.

Have fun

Sorry--your time is limited. Hopefully it's a night game. If so, I would check out Cooperstown.
