We were there! We were at the pep rally at the team hotel, the parade, and of course the game.

Yep...and the pep rally at the team hotel too.***

When we were at the pep rally we thought that parking lot looked pretty industrial wasteland. And let’s be honest, Miami was in pretty bad shape back then. That was before the cocaine wars and Miami Vice and all the money that transformed Miami into what it is today.

Then the program for the Orange Bowl had a full page ad for that hotel. I think it was the Dupont plaza? Does that sound correct?

There was a full page ad with an aerial photo of the hotel in the program and we saw it was sitting on Biscayne Bay. There were like 100+ foot yachts tied up to the hotel in the picture.

We only went into the lobby. We never did walk around the hotel and didn’t realize until we saw that picture that it was sitting on the water. There was so much traffic and so many people that day it was pretty chaotic so we only hung around long enough for the pep rally. Next time I’m in South Florida I want to go see that hotel again. Of course it has probably been demolished and is now an even nicer hotel or million dollar condos.

I lived in Florida for about five years starting in 1999. I lived on Clearwater Beach and down in Sarasota and dated a girl that lived in Miami. She lived in Coral Gables one street from Coconut Grove. I used to go there on the weekends and loved it. Went to Key West a good many times as well. I really enjoyed Hollywood, which was before they had the Hard Rock, and of course West Palm and Jupiter are great. A buddy of mine that graduated from Clemson was living and working in West Palm at the time.

I love it down there. The east and the west coast of South Florida are very different but both are beautiful and the fishing is fantastic. Don’t get me started on the women! Good Lord! It’s just ridiculous! My 55-year-old heart couldn’t handle that today. LOL!

I definitely remember the hotel.

It was right on the water and overlooked what I assume was Biscayne Bay.

Unfortunately, it's no longer there. It was demolished years ago and some developer built a bunch of high-end condos in its place.

Missed the parade, but not the game.

I remember the Miami spirts page had a pic ofFrank Howard wearing a rainbow wig and regaling a local banquet like only Frank Howard could. But my best memory was celebrating in the stands postgame with Perry Tuttle’s sweet momma, sitting just below us.

We parked in a vacant lot...

across from the open end of the stadium. As we walked back to the van, the area right behind those stands under the scoreboard, the Tiger Band was celebrating the win with bottles of champagne and invited us to join them. One of the guys in our group had a girlfriend who was a majorette (Debbie Burdette), so we hung out and partied with the band. Well...mostly the majorettes ;)

What grade were you in?

Aug 13, 2021, 3:58 PM

That was my freshman year of high school. I was good friends with a lot of guys on the soccer team at Clemson 84 through 88 and I think you were two years ahead of me.

Watched from our hotel balcony on Biscayne Boulevard.

Great find. I was there as a little kid. Question:

Aug 13, 2021, 2:02 PM

What is it about chicks kicking their legs way up high that gets everybody so excited ?

Was a BIG thing back in the day - 3 or 4 minutes of the opening of this broadcast was pretty much nothing but that - and the place was getting pretty crazy.

Other than the rockettes, has it died a slow, painful death ?

I don't get it - never have . . . .

Brad Brownell: Only Larry freaking Shyatt has a WORSE overall winning percentage among Clemson basketball coaches since 1975. Let that sink in. It's Larry Shyatt & then Brad Brownell.

I wasn't there but saw it on TV. I miss the way the band used to go from "Sock It To 'Em" into "Tiger Rag" without the long pause.
