Anybody else EXCITED about our new coordinators and

the future of Clemson football? First of all, Dabo has been grooming these guys for years for this opportunity; they are not fallback hires, or cost-cutting hires; they are exactly who the guy who built 2 National Champions and perennial playoff teams wanted. And the idea that these guys are a couple of greenhorns who may crap the bed is laughable. First, Streeter is a proven coordinator (6 years), and has schooled for 7 years under Dabo and Elliott/Scott. Wes Goodwin has NFL experience for God's sake, and has been praised by the coach who won the super bowl. Does any of that mean they will be succcessful at Clemson? NO - there are no guarantees, but if they fail it won't be because of a lack of knowledge or experience at a sufficent level. Come on people, be happy for Venables and Elliott, and let's look forward to a new era of Clemson football!

but, dabo doesn't do anything like saban does... he's not an a-hole to reporters.. his demeanor isn't always "pissed".. they're just different. no doubt saban's way works, but dabo's ain't too shabby, either.

what i am excited about is the unknown. the past 6 years or so, while it's been fun dominating the acc.. it's, undoubtedly, been boring (for the most part). i'm ready for some exciting games..

i know this isn't a popular opinion, but i enjoy a good game more than a blowout.

he also doesn't have seasons like Clemson did this year against a much tougher schedule.

I don't like Saban, but he stays consistent.

This is not a criticism to Dabo, the environment he has created, or the coaches here, but organizations need fresh blood from time to time. Without fresh perspectives, you tend to grow used to hidden deficiencies and blind spots.

with merely a Top 40 or so, and we are very likely 13-0, ranked #1, and playing Cincy in a CFP semi-final.

DJ barely qualified as serviceable this season, to everyone's surprise. Ty Pho was nowhere near 100% either - no one comes back fully from a torn achilles in 6 months. Kind of a double whammy at the most important position. Thems the breaks.

Dabo has been an A hole to certain media persons, and deservingly so. I will assume that that the hate for Saban is mostly bc he has been so successful, and with him being a hated coach, it is really easy to nit pic reasons to hate him while denying your hate is bc he is so successful!!!

We all know Dabo and the image that he has among the Clemson faithful, and he is dearly loved by MOST of Tiger nation, and bc of his success at with Clemson FB, like Saban, he is a hated man, and it's only bc he has been so successful at Clemson. If Dabo, and Saban wasn't nearly as successful as they both are with their FB programs, the hate from other fan bases would be non existent, and that is 100% the truth!!!

If the success that those two man are having with their FB programs hadn't been for a decade plus, their names would never be brought up, and the fans that has all the negative thing to say about them would never be heard of, and that to is a fact!!!!!

She has to share her bedroom with a Chinese exchange student who is named after duck's dork, her grandma feels her up in the hallway, and to top it all off, the biggest nerd in high school borrows her panties and charges the other nerds a dollar to see them in bathroom.

But in the end, she gets the popular, rich stud athlete Jake and they have a romantic evening with a cake.

All good points and Dabo certainly has the right to develop his bench and promote from within. My only beef is that a consistent top 5 program can have its pick of the best available coordinators across the country so why not at least look at the competition and compare that with what you have rather than just stubbornly ignoring all the available talent out there? If Best is the Standard then you need to look at the Best that is available and not close your mind to only the talent you have developed. To me, that is not being disloyal to anyone; it is just being smart and thoughtful to consider all of the possibilities.

I have every confidence that they are good coaches, knowledgeable, hard working, and good people. I believe they love Clemson. They deserve our support for sure.

But I would be lying if I said I’m excited. We have been an elite program recently and I believe we should hire the best and brightest. Perhaps Dabo recognized that they are the best and brightest years ago and has groomed them well, and we have the best coordinators in college football. But we must be prepared that this strategy to promote from within is going to backfire if we hope to return to elite status in the near future.

Do you think the fact that he promoted from within indicates

[2]
Dec 21, 2021, 1:38 PM

that Dabo has a "strategy to promote from within"? Meaning, that promoting from within is his strategy, or a key component of his strategy? Because I don't see that at all. Don't misunderstand me - I understand the advantages and how they apply in this situation, but I don't think Dabo starts with that, as in "okay, we need a new coordinator, and my fundamental strategy is to hire from within, so that's what we'll do no matter who else is available from outside our program". I don't think that's the case at all; in fact, that's total ########.

your welcome

flag link

Yes, I firmly believe that Dabo’s plan at this point is to promote from within.

[2]
Dec 21, 2021, 1:51 PM

He did it when Morris left, and now he has done it with Venables and Elliott leaving.

Dabo’s recent outside hires seem to be limited to those who he has either coached or worked closely with, and who have ties to Clemson. The plan seems to be that those coaches will learn and grow here, and be ready to move up in responsibility at Clemson.

You heard our new coordinators say that Dabo had been planning to promote from within and that’s why they stayed here.

Dabo had no intention of going outside or even looking outside to fill these positions. He’s been planning for this for years.

So yes, I absolutely believe that this is Dabo’s fundamental strategy and he has offered no recent evidence to the contrary.

It’s not like he considered current staff and also interviewed outside candidates. I would bet good money that he didn’t make a single call to inquire about anyone else to fill these recent openings.

You're not following.

[1]
Dec 21, 2021, 2:23 PM

Two entirely different strategies:

1. My primary hiring strategy is to hire and promote from within. I think it's always best to hire from within. I will not look outside the program, even if there may be better candidates out there. I like to keep things in house for various reasons.

THAT would be a "hire from within strategy".

2. My hiring strategy is to hire the best possible candidate. In this case, I have two guys on staff who I have been observing, teaching, and grooming for these positions for years. I feel that they are, all the way around, the best candidates for these positions available for Clemson. I identified them long ago and this is the plan. Therefore there is no need for me to interview anyone from outside the program.

That is what happened here, and that is NOT a "hire from within strategy".

2022 purple level memberbadge-donor-15yr.jpg flag link

"Democracy is the theory that the common people know what they want, and deserve to get it good and hard."

Thanks for clarifying.

[1]
Dec 21, 2021, 2:59 PM

To me, the difference between your two strategies is insignificant because Dabo clearly prefers to hire from within and isn’t interested in looking outside anymore.

I don’t believe Dabo truly thinks that Brandon Streeter is the beat offensive coordinator in college football, or that Mickey Conn and Wes Goodwin are the best defensive coordinators in college football. He couldn’t possibly think that if he is being honest and objective.

However, I do think that he thinks those guys are the best situation for our program, because Dabo seems to place a premium on doing things his way and in keeping with the culture he has built. I admire his commitment to those principles, but I think it runs the risk of missing out on new styles and new ideas.

The notion that outside coaches can’t be the right culture fit here is eerily similar to the idea that players from the transfer portal won’t be good culture fits. I just don’t want to see us become too insulated and fail to capitalize on the many bright and innovative talents out there.

To me, if our culture is as wonderful and strong and powerful as we believe it is, we should trust that it won’t crumble even if someone new isn’t the best fit. That’s true whether we are talking about a coach or a player.

2022 white level memberbadge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link

Cobbox on Brad Brownell: “His only problem is he has to deal with turd fans questioning every move he makes.”

A lot to unpack there.

[2]
Dec 21, 2021, 5:01 PM

I agree that Dabo prefers to identify coaches who have the potential to be coordinators and head coaches, hire them, groom them, and promote them accordingly. I think that is a fantastic strategy.

It does not follow, however, that he will no longer go outside the program if need be; that is faulty logic. Does he believe Streeter is the best OC in the country? Probably not, but that's not the way these things work. Was Kevin Steele tha best DC in the country? Was Chad Morris the best OC in the country? Was Steve Sarkisisn or Bill O'Brien the best OC in the country? No. It could always be argued there was somebody better, so it's a dumb argument. Only one team can have the best OC in the country, and every team besides that one can't be in a panic and in turmoil because they don't have that one imaginary guy. So relax. Does Dabo believe that Streeter is the best OC in the history of mankind? Stop it already. I'm sure he does believe that Streeter is fully capable of getting us back to a playoff caliber offense, and I'm good with that. If Dabo didn't believe that, he'd go outside the program in a heartbeat to bring in somebody that could. To suggest otherwise is laughable.

I agree that Dabo would go outside the program to hire a coordinator if he felt that he needed to.

[1]
Dec 21, 2021, 7:31 PM

I just don’t see him thinking he needs to at this point, because he’s that confident in his hire and promote from within method.

My concern is that he has lost objectivity, and is so focused on our way and our people that he didn’t even stop to truly consider anyone from outside the program for these coordinator hires. If so, that’s concerning.

In terms of hiring the best, I certainly realize that there can only be one best and who that is can be debated. My point is that our program is to the point where we should strive to have the best. “Best is the Standard,” after all. We’ve put way too much into our program at this point to settle for less than stellar coaches on staff.

Again, my hope is that our new coordinators are that high caliber. If not, it would be frustrating to see them trying to learn on the job while Dabo asks for our patience. Know what I mean?

Cobbox on Brad Brownell: “His only problem is he has to deal with turd fans questioning every move he makes.”

And that's where we disagree.

[4]
Dec 21, 2021, 8:18 PM

I don't think he's lost his objectivity. I just think he's doing what he thinks is best, what is right for Clemson. As I tried to explain earlier, while there may be OCs out there who almost everybody would agree are "better" than Streeter, it's still just an opinion, and they may not be better for Clemson. That's obviously Dabo's opinion, and I tend to think he maybe right. Just like TDP was right when he hired Dabo. I certainly trust his judgement, and I don't understand how this is an indication that he's lost his ability to think objectively. I know his way is different than most, but it's worked extremely well until this year, and I have no reason not to trust his judgement.

While I agree with what you're saying, Wes's resume and accolades speak for themself. Wonderful peer comments. But we don't have to stretch it and act like omg, he's got tons of coordinator experience. He worked in the NFL for a couple years. No doubt he's got knowledge of our defense and learned under the best. But he's green from the standpoint he's never been a coordinator. Imo, as I've said b4, exactly why he made him the co coordinator. Conn can help him a ton.

All that said, I believe it's a wonderful hire. All 3 of them. The bottom line to me, can they bring in the Jimmy and Joes. Dabo already said we're running the same offense and defense so it doesn't matter to me if they recruit well.

Great organizations all develop from within, I realize that model exists rarely(if ever) in football but Dabo has made it clear he is building a program that others will copy and they are. Hire people with potential and develop them. Reward them!

Outside hires in most organizations are a sign of failure, bring in the turnaround guy to fix it. I recognize many believe they witnessed failure this year but obviously Dabo doesn’t agree.

Dabo’s process is textbook, doesn’t guarantee it will work. I’m pulling for him and his staff to pull it off. I believe 2022 is the start of another 10 year run and I believe we can be back in ACC championship next year.

Why wouldn't a Clemson fan not have faith in the decisions he has made thus far?

I didn't know anything about Dabo when he was announced as HC except one thing - "he was a heck of a recruiter"! I recall telling someone; at least he has that!
But, I was wrong! He is so much more than just a great recruiter! He is a man of vision and in his vision, he planned for coaching departures!
The coaches who will get these opportunities in my opinion are going to do well! NC well - IDK! Who knows with how fluid the CFB world is as a whole; but I know they have been groomed for it and Dabo believes in them!
That's enough for me - so to answer the question again, "I can't wait to see what they bring; I think it's going to be a good splash of different"!

Excited to see the new coaches lead. CU couldn’t hold on to coaches E and V forever. They’ll do well and so will our new coordinators. Go Tigers!,,

I’m excited about the new hires. They are young, smart and ambitious. And don’t discount the value of hiring someone who knows the team well. Continuity.

On the other side, there is a certain amount of risk coming here. With all of our success in recent years there are bigger and richer programs where the odds may look better to potential candidates.

And like you, I am excited about these promotions especially Goodwin who has been built up as a high IQ photographic-memory savant.

My take is the talent on this Clemson team has taken a pretty big hit since the best ever Clemson football team of 2018. And Dabo will have his hands full bringing this team back to the top of the mountain. But he is unphased and excited for the challenge, and that is all we can ask for based upon his track record.

My biggest concern is how we will replace the coaches, players and difference makers who were collegiate superstars with equal or better players: TL16, BV, Power Rangers, IS11, freshman JR8, Tee, etc. etc.

Bresee and TD13 are rock solid with big upside but have been injury prone. M. Murphy, one of our top 5 overall players, has been a co-starter (what gives)? Weak O-line showed some rushing improvement vs bad teams at year-end. RB position shows potential. But to be honest these 2018/19/20 stars were never replaced with equivalent talent. Dabo is one he11uva coach but until this talent gap with the big boys (Bama, Ohio St, 2019 LSU) is evened up, he will be pressed to put a product on the field that matches our top 2018 squad and playoff caliber teams. It's a WIP.

Many top recruits have high-level promise (Trotter, Carter, Leigh, Page, Stellato, Denhoff, Briningstool, Linthicum, Pennington, Chandler, Tate, Mafah, Klubnick, Covil, Sadler, Lukus, Pride, Miller and Williams) and a handful have played and demonstrated big-time skill sets (B. Collins and Shipley). 2022 looks like a year we return as ACC champs, but IMHO these young up-and-comers need some reps and development to ascend to playoff level in 2023/24. Hopefully, some of these o-linemen, defenders and skill players will break out. QB will again be key. Hello Mr. Klubnick. Tigers need your mobility, accuracy and leadership when you and coaches are ready to put you in.

In a word ......spring ball.

That and the individual summer workouts is where good teams become great teams.
