Any Roanoke tigers

Oct 23, 2019, 7:38 AM

Looking at moving that way. Any recs on areas to live? Areas to avoid? Thanks

I don't live up that way but my in-laws are up near there and so I go up there frequently. I always wear my Clemson gear and have never had any problems. VaTech is the school around there and they've always been very nice and welcoming to me when I'm there. I've had some great conversations with fans and students alike. It's like anyplace - some will give you a good-natured hard time, most will be just happy to talk football with you and how they want to be where we are, and there are always a few jerks, but thankfully I've never encountered the latter up there. It's a beautiful area. Some great hiking and mtn biking up there.

Come on up. We need a few more Tigers up here. I don't live in Roanoke, but reside about 50 miles Southeast. As far as recs on living, it really depends on what you like. Really is a beautiful area that will accommodate any lifestyle.

The city and county are separate. Speaking generally, if you want to live in the city, Northwest and southeast can be problematic. Northeast and Southwest are better. The county is generally ok. If you are bringing children, the Cave Spring area has the higher rated schools. Salem is a good area also. I can give you more specifics if you need it.

Southwest Roanoke County (Cave Spring area) is nice, but I will give you the same advice I received thirty years ago: Consider Botetourt County. That is pronounced Bot-a-tot for reasons too complicated to explain here.

Schools are good. Traffic, home prices, and taxes are less.

There are a number of Tigers in the area including several families in our church, and we are tolerated by the Va Tech crowd.

Nice place to live!

+1 on Botetourt as an alternative. But only if you want to be outside the city proper.

Roanoake is interesting. You will have more "blue collar" affordable options in the city that tend to be a bit better than other similar cities (say like Asheville), but more than Bristol. However, I would keep towards the SW side of the city but your dollar goes farther. Basically, anything between 6pm and 9pm looking at a map from the downtown area would be my choice. Not saying anything outside of that wouldn't be good but that will be the area I would shoot for. I personally would likely live in the Grandin area as a first pick, but I prefer to live as close as I can get in those first ring urban "suburbs".

Yep, I'm a Tiger, transplanted in Roanoke. If your looking to move. Live in Roanoke County, not the city. Avoid Franklin Rd, Melrose Ave, at night. It's not a bad place to live, downtown is fun on the weekends. Va Tech fans can be delusional. But they've been fairly quiet the past several years.

Go Tigers!

I live about 45 miles south of Roanoke in Pulaski, VA. I'm surprised at all the Clemson fans I run into all the time. It's a nice area.
