any of you trmpsters feeling conned yet?

Jul 16, 2018, 4:05 PM

any of you willing to admit that we elected a shameless con man?

is his act wearing thin on any of you?

watching some of you continue to defend him can be entertaining... in an alternative univers - sci-fi/film noir kind of way

his whole schtick would be funny if it weren't so potentially tragic

I hate booming economies
lower taxes
more businessess coming back
more jobs
all time low unemployment for all races
more money in my pocket.

this sucks!

High inflation is the biggest threat to our entire economy.

No, as in raising prices without raising wages would have

Jul 17, 2018, 10:28 AM

a negative impact on the economy. We survived before with better built, more expensive American goods because of higher incomes (factory workers making enough for their wives to stay home with the kids).

It'd be quite tough to reverse course without a redistribution of income.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

So relative to inflation, are you saying wages are lower now

Jul 17, 2018, 10:42 AM

than say in 1960? Or even 1980?

And I honestly don't know that answer..but I'd be surprised to see that to be true.

fake edit:

They don't appear lower. They may not have grown much, but they certainly aren't less?

http://www.pewresearch.org/fact-tank/2014/10/09/for-most-workers-real-wages-have-barely-budged-for-decades/

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

That's the crux of the issue there. "They don't appear

Jul 17, 2018, 10:58 AM

lower. They may not have grown much but they certainly aren't less"

If wages aren't increasing, they're decreasing. What makes the problem worse is that the majority of the growth skews to the top.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

"If wages aren't increasing, they're decreasing"

Jul 17, 2018, 11:09 AM

I'm not sure what you mean here. At least in the example I provided, it uses 2014 dollars dating back to 1964, so inflation is accounted for. Obviously: hardly anyone was making $19.18/hr as an average hourly wage in 1964.

The question was "have wages decreased over time?" and the answer both in adjusted and non adjusted forms is "no, they haven't".

So relative to inflation wages haven't actually decreased as you stated, how did we do it when hardly anything was made in China?

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Relative to cost of living they have. Those gains are not

Jul 17, 2018, 11:11 AM

being realized by middle and low income earners.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

What are you saying then?

Jul 17, 2018, 11:16 AM

Does the cost of living not include the affects of inflation?

Couldn't the cost of living increases we all see over time simply be called inflation?

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

A worker who started his career in the 80's will make, on

Jul 17, 2018, 11:23 AM

average, less than one who started a career in the 60s.

The income gains we've seen, overwhelmingly go to top earners, not the middle class.

Attaching additional tariffs to goods and increasing manufacturing costs would not be good for the middle class.

That's the gist of it. It's not really a fringe position.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

That first part is hard to know, isn't it?

Jul 17, 2018, 11:36 AM

unless you can tell what the future holds. As to "making less", I don't know how you are accounting for inflation, so I can't answer nor derive what you are talking about. ANECDOTALLY, I'd like to think I'll continue to make more money as I age, but it could not happen I guess. I would imagine most people feel that way. As to what the money I earn can buy, again, I don't know what inflation will be. I don't think you do either.

As for tariffs; I'm not sure how the goal posts of this brief conversation got moved to those, but I think the jury is still out on their results. I'm not generally a big believer in their use unless it involves taxing the use of offshore labor, but I think the market will react accordingly.

My point of "how did we make it before everything was made in China" is that there seems to be a big belief that we make less today (you said that) and from what I can tell that's simply not correct, even accounting for inflation. Your statement about the "those gains are not being realized by middle and low income earners" seems subjective to me. How can you quantitatively say that?

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Unemployment was 4.8% before the election with the

Jul 16, 2018, 5:41 PM [ in reply to yep ]

economy on one of its more historical long-running gain streaks.

Approximately 90% of the corporate tax cuts you 'hate' have gone to dividends and stock buybacks. The anticipation of that result is largely what propelled equity prices and stock growths so strongly in 2017. Values are largely unchanged this year as the market seems to have pre-absorbed that looming payday. Hope you were in early - the 401k definitely looks better today than it did in 2016, and dividends will likely continue alongside, but I'm not sold on the foundation, especially at the cost of this with that long-term tax cut. The conservative in me screams at the irresponsibility of using precious fuel like this - debt - on an already expanding fire that was already leading the first world economies.

immature and naive. Those are the "logic skills of a small child.", and why I asked your age. Seems like something a teenager would say.
