Any lungers reload/handload yer own ammo?

Jan 11, 2022, 1:11 PM

That was my new Covid lockdown hobby. I've made about 1,000 rounds between .223, 9mm, and .357.

Do you charge anything for it?

If not, you're a freeloader.

I got a guy who loads my rifle rounds

We used several different powder and grains combos to see what the gun "liked". Then zeroed in to 49.5 grains of Winchester 760. Five shot groups all touching so not too shabby.

Did you do the whole chrono thing for velocity, or just shoot groups?

Components have been hard to get for the last year so I'm not doing much fine tuning like that yet. I'm mainly building range fodder and getting comfortable with the equipment, process etc. and trying not to blow something up.

First, "fun" rounds just to fit the brass to the chamber
Then, different powders to find consistent groups.
After that, focus on one powder with half-grain increments within allowable limits.

For my gun, 49 or 49.5 were equal but I want the slightly higher speed.

This guy is probably the only one in the world I would let load ammo for me without my being there watching.

Sarcasm aside

yes I'm sure there's a whole prepper vibe but you can handload better quality ammo (read: improved accuracy and precision) for lower price per round than factory ammo, especially for the 'non-commodity' calibers like 9MM.

It doesn't hurt that I can still go to the range and shoot while ammo is scarce at the stores, but going all survivalist wasn't my motivation for taking it up.

.223 is the only bottlneck rifle cartridge I'm loading now and still manage to get a case stuck every couple of hundred.

.308 and 7.62*54R are the next two I plan to start up but I'm not sure about the bullet size for the latter - it's for a WWII Mosin so bore may be somewhat out of spec I think.

i have loaded 30-06 as well... best wishes for that 7.62*54 WWII round - never heard of it but I never have looked to reload for anything beyond that which was readily available on regular market
