Anheuser-Busch - St Louis Brewery Tour Experience

I was in St. Louis for the last couple of days on business with a colleague from Brazil. He wanted to see the Anheuser-Busch brewery as a casual non-work event.

We decided on taking the Clydesdales VIP Tour, but got to the brewery too late for that evening’s tours. We were going to have to come back the next day. So, we decided to just go over to the “biergarten” to get a beer.

What was funny about the whole situation is how the lady bartender reacted when we walked up to the bar.

She immediately began thanking us REPEATEDLY for coming to the brewery center to visit. She said that there have hardly been anyone coming to the tours and biergarten since the “you know what event”. She said that her work has been cut back, and part of her compensation came from tips, and she has not been making enough money since the marketing fiasco.

I was a bit surprised that the tourist center had taken such a hit from “the marketing event”, particularly in St. Louis, the headquarters of Anheuser-Busch.

I’m not a beer connoisseur, so, I am not debating the taste of Anheuser-Busch’s product. However, after taking the Clydesdales VIP Tour and learning more about the heritage and history of the company, I came away with the opinion that the marketing event that everyone has been talking about was probably as much of an affront to the company’s own brand and heritage, as it was to it’s customers.

Unfortunately they aren’t the same company of their “heritage”. Sold out to European entity InBev and don’t have the firm control of Augie and the Busch family legacy any longer. I used to work as a consultant at 4 of their breweries, three of their entertainment parks and three of their container and packaging plants and they were a well run company.

That is a shame for the employees. I did a tour as a little boy at the one at Busch Gardens in Tampa. Didn't realize they no longer did that there. Thanks for the memories of spending that day with my dad.
