Will Clemson not being a "Heisman school" hurt recruiting?

Dec 13, 2019, 3:26 PM

Since we have not had a Heisman winner, will this hurt us getting big time players?

Finebaum was making fun of us on his show today. Pissed me off.

Only for QBs and RBs since they're the only ones who win it.

But no.

But a Heisman winner gives legitimacy to a program.

I feel other teams could be using our inability to land a Heisman winner as a recruiting advantage over a big time athlete.

Exactly why they are so much better than we are, what shall we ever do? This cycling out is hard stuff. I sure wish our team was sitting at home after a 4 win season....

touche' Good comeback.

I'm just wondering if it will start to hurt us. Our schedule has been so weak and our second teamers have been put in in the 3rd quarter most games.

I feel like if we were in the SEC we would get more exposure. Etienne and Trevor should be Heisman finalists. Tee should be up there with the best, as well

This is the real point. If a player is wrapped up in Heisman talk enough to effect recruiting they are likely not a good fit for our program.

These high power programs have them. We have 0. Is Sweeney hurting our best players chances for the Heisman? Shouldn't he at least let them play into the 4th quarter to help their stats?

We might not be the leader in individual awards but we have a team building process that’s like none other.

It would be great to win the Heisman soon but we shouldn’t change our methods. Whatever we are doing is working fine. ??

Landing five top players from five different states during one recruiting cycle is underachievement for a program like ours. In fact, only three of them came from state with National Championships in the last ten years.

TL came from Georgia a school that hasn't had a NC since Carter was potus.

No Heisman for Clemson any time soon, no matter how good the athlete. Two seriously deserving, absolutely ignored. Far to much ridiculous anti-Clemson bias precisely because of our success. Do anything necessary to keep Clemson from ever being mentioned. ESECPN calls the shots. Looking forward to trashing BUCKNUTS and LSWHO? but it will be after the fix is in. The fix is always in except on the field. And even then somtimes the fix is in on the field. It is still better to just win. George Rogers, cocaine memo, never even scored on us, and we beat Lamar twice. Go Tigers!

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Will Clemson not being a "Heisman school" hurt recruiting?

Dec 13, 2019, 6:55 PM

I see it much more as a pro-SEC/BigTen bias rather than anti-Clemson. There may be a few pundits here and there that don't like Clemson, but for the most part, they do respect Clemson overall, just not as much as the top teams in the Big Ten and SEC each year.

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Will Clemson not being a "Heisman school" hurt recruiting?

Dec 13, 2019, 6:53 PM

IMO, this is an absolutely ridiculous notion. I can't speak for all players, but I would be shocked if there were any players that Clemson would want that would care more about a Heisman than a national championship. I'm sure there are numerous players that want to win a Heisman, but this is a team sport, and we want team players that are focused on the larger goal of winning championships over individual accolades.

If Dabo was absolutely determined to have a Clemson player win a Heisman, I'm confident that we would have one within the next decade. Problem is that it would require him to change his coaching philosophy and leave a QB in the game into the 4th qtr week in and week out to pad the numbers. Trevor Lawrence was on the bench early in the 2nd quarter against Charlotte this year. He could have thrown 4 more TDs that game if he had stayed in.

It's very difficult for a RB to win the award, but Etienne would almost certainly be a finalist in NY if he were given the same number of carries as Jonathan Taylor. Eveb if his average were to go down from 8.2 to mid-7s, he would have well over 2000 yards and 25 TDs. If he had been returning KOs all year instead of only a couple in the past two games, he would have likely scored another TD or two as well.

We would all love it, but only if it were to come as part of our normal strategy. We all want a Clemson player to win the Heisman, and even though championships and Heismans are not mutually exclusive, I'm perfectly happy the way things are going right now.
