Anyone else still glowing from the coot vic'try?

Dec 1, 2021, 9:29 AM

'member how Danny used to day "vic'try"?

Anyhow, APM began re-watching last night. Observations:

1) Those runs by Shipley and Pace were awesome.
2) We not only used the standup wishbone, we also had a standup offset I formation.
3) The announcers answered one of my questions from Sunday morning, which was, yes, our offense was keeping the TEs on the line to block.
4) DAYYYYYYUM Booth was feelin' it. Lost in this relatively bad season is how good our D is and how good our DBs have been. Imagine how good we could have been with everyone healthy on D and a 3/4 of our normal offense.
5) While I don't hope to see us go to a majority running offense, it was cool to see how much clock a running game eats up and to see an old fashioned field position battle (at times). Once we got up 17-0, that game was pretty much done. Their offense could not handle what BV (PLEASE stay!) dialed up for them.
6) As much as DJU has struggled, it was good to see him not commit the big error leading to a score. The one INT was actually a good call in the situation and did not wind up hurting us at all.

Finally, I am looking forward to watching the games this weekend with nothing in it for us. Just sit back and enjoy. Then we find out where we play in a bowl. Looks like the Gator, which is fine (TLaw Country! DUVALLL!), but I'd rather not face TAMU, since we have beaten Jimbo as much as we need to and I'd rather see a team we have not faced recently or ever. Make the bowl games what they used to be - good intersectional games.

#4

Dec 1, 2021, 9:34 AM

As long as #5 was slingin the pigskin, our offense was never going to be good.

Please forgive me, @IneligibleUser

3/4 of our usual offense assumes 3/4 of a usual QB.

Dec 1, 2021, 9:40 AM

Sorry DJU. I know you had a lot on ya this year.

Ev'ry day. This might be the best defense we have ever had.

Dec 1, 2021, 9:37 AM

If our offense had put them in the same positions granted past defenses, the D would have looked like it did against scu a lot more often, I think. It was great as it was.

2024 white level memberbadge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

THANK YOU!!!!! Been saying that all season.

Dec 1, 2021, 9:41 AM

This defense might legit be the best one Dabo's had, and yes, I'm saying that while fully aware of 2016 and the Power Rangers.

And that's taking into account injuries and transfers.

Dec 1, 2021, 9:54 AM

The coaching and development given that was nothing short of magical wizardry.

I will always think that the O ineptness wore the D

completely out in some games and caused at least some of the injuries. When Skalski made that 4th down stop against GT, I was afraid he hurt that shoulder. Dood could barely get up. I don't think he could have gone another play. And this is G effin' T we're talking about.

Re: I will always think that the O ineptness wore the D

Dec 1, 2021, 10:36 AM

Someone on the mange summed it up nicely a while back. "Our O is so bad it broke our D."

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

DEFINITELY part of it.

Dec 1, 2021, 11:00 AM [ in reply to I will always think that the O ineptness wore the D ]

And, to that, I'll add that one of the things I could have criticized Tony Elliott for was going into full Chad Morris Mode by sticking with his system in spite of quarterback troubles but to his credit, he did finally move to a running-based attack while still calling enough passing plays to keep defenses honest. I think DJ may actually turn out to be serviceable with an offseason to get his head right and gain back some roster stability from injury, but I'm also convinced that he's NOT a Watson or a Lawrence. If he had been a game-manager this year instead of the game-changer role he was cast into, we'd be headed to Charlotte this weekend and still at least be in the conversation for the playoff...albeit still mostly on the backs of the defense.

At a minimum you don't have a shovel-pass-pick-six, and

Dec 1, 2021, 11:11 AM

a whole bunch of stuff changes as a result. His head was somewhere else, for sure.

I think his mom and dad are getting a divorce, and I have noticed that big dave is not at the games anymore. Something is happening there, it seems. He will never be fast, he will never be a Deshaun type leader. Fine. But something seemed really off.

2024 white level memberbadge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

One good thing that came out it is the fact that we learned

Dec 1, 2021, 11:20 AM

to run the ball again. There were times even in the Watson/Lawrence years we couldn't sustain drives because of that and relied upon big chunk plays to overwhelm opponents. The last two weeks of the regular season this year was a glorious thing to watch for an old-school football fan like me. It doesn't produce newspaper headline splashy scores, but watching an Oline smash ahead and chew up the clock while wearing out a defense is what the game was built on. I like seeing that far more than video game results to be perfectly candid.

ringofhonor-rhtig.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

we had a hard time running the ball in 2020

Dec 1, 2021, 11:56 AM

and this is with the incredible Etienne at RB, he rushed for 914 yards in 2020 after rushing for 1614 in 2019

we had an excellent QB in 2020 to make up for the lack of running yards

I think we replaced Etienne very well with Shipley, Pace, and Mafah and the oline was better at the end of the year, oline will improve next year

Dabo's gonna have to deliver the tough message next year...

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I'm not sure how you can say that given 2018 team...

Dec 1, 2021, 11:55 AM [ in reply to THANK YOU!!!!! Been saying that all season. ]

that was the best defense we've had IMO, especially the last half of the year...and more specifically in the playoffs.

Held ND to 3 and Bama to 16. I've never seen a team that dominate against the run.

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Did you miss the UGA game?

Dec 1, 2021, 1:24 PM

Because we were even more dominant against the run in that game.

Absolutely

Dec 1, 2021, 9:45 AM

This one was one of the sweetest of the 7 because these clowns had some hope they could win.

I rank 2014 as the best because Deshaun turned the tide on one leg. 2016 maybe gets more of a nod because it was such a fun ### stomping.

The best kind of hope to smash is that delusional,

manufactured hope. If they were actually good, one can tip the hat to both their hope and effort. But not those clowns.

Having said that, Beamer finding 6 wins with that mess was a great coaching job. "Here. Here is nobody, and two quarterbacks who have already quit. Now go beat Auburn." And he did.

2024 white level memberbadge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Perfect storm this year.

Dec 1, 2021, 11:13 AM

He split with the teams on their level (ECU, Missouri), put up a good fight against a slightly better team in Kentucky, struggled out a win against a lesser talented Vandy team, and caught Auburn and Florida at the height of their disarray. Barring some stellar pulls from the transfer portal, I see them as being anywhere from a 4-8 to 7-5 team next year. They replace a struggling Auburn with a solid Arkansas, and I'd wager that Florida already has a better roster and will get reenergized with Napier. Tough sledding ahead for Beamer, but they'll look competitive I'd say.
