Soft Spot for UVA

Oct 30, 2013, 5:30 PM

I've always enjoyed poking fun at the wine/cheese crowd from UVA, but over the past year I've changed my tune. Just before the first game last season my wife, Clemson '93, was diagnosed with stage 3 breast cancer. We live about an hour from UVA so we took full advantage of their cancer center. It's been a very tough year, but the folks at UVA have made it much easier than it could have been. I'm happy to say the wife is doing well as her bout continues. Our three little girls are torn between the Tigers and the Cavaliers who have helped to make Mom better. Having my better half to share the 1000 mile round trip to all the home games this year puts the outcome of the game in perspective. It will be nice to travel to Charlottesville Saturday as a Tiger fan instead of a cancer patient. Hope we light up the scoreboard, but I can't be hard on the hoos anymore.

Glad to hear that your wife is doing well.

I will be sure to keep her in my prayers.

I know a lot of Clemson people like to call UVA the "wine and cheese" crowd. I guess that's supposed to be an insult, but I for one have never felt that such sophistication is somehow above what Clemson people are all about. But maybe I don't understand the insult.

I've always seen a lot of similarities between UVA and Clemson academically and socially. Charlottesville is a fun town, and UVA a great school.

I hope your wife continues to improve and gets well and stays that way. Nice touch on the post. I do hope we (Clemson) takes them to the wood shed Saturday, though. It won't impact their medical school, you can bet on that.

God bless you, your wife, and family

And explain to your girls that they pull for the doctors at Virginia and the football players at Clemson.

I know exactly how you feel except in a different circumstance. The Doctors at duke literally saved my life a few years ago. They just saved my wife's brothers life with a double lung transplant with a double heart bypass in the same surgery. It was a maybe or maybe not make it for a few days, but he is up walking and talking right now. Now I only hate duke in sports on the day's they play us. My prayers will be with your family. I seriously added God to my life after my close encounter of loosing my life early, and I have been happier and more at peace than I ever have in my life.

I have same soft spot for Maryland

I'm glad to hear you and your wife are doing well. I work in Baltimore and a co-worker needed a kidney about a year and a half ago. I was a match so the transplant was done at University of Maryland Medical Center. The care I received there was unbelievable. I was sent home the day after surgery and my co-worker was back at work 8 weeks later. Still not too thrilled with Maryland fans though.

Had a similar situation years ago at Duke. My wife was a patient at the Duke Cancer Center back in the mid 80's and on our arrival for her first round of treatments we were introduced to one of her 'care givers'. This "lady" was an avid tarhole fan and when she learned of our allegiance to Clemson her first remarks were "Oh, we hate Clemson". The Duke folks were great but I didn't care for the heels before that and a lot less afterwards. GO TIGERS .... Beat Everbody!
