New Story: Clemson coaches visit Rashan Gary: Can Tigers nail down official visit?

Clemson coaches visit Rashan Gary: Can Tigers nail down official visit?

Members of Clemson’s coaching staff conducted an in-home visit with the nation’s top-rated defensive tackle Tuesday night, and the visit made an impact. But was it enough to get a final visit from Gary later this month? In an in-depth and exclusive interview, Gary's mother talks about the visit and Clemson's chances for landing an official visit later this month. Full Story »

No not even USC or Michigan can say that. Sorry. Now Alabama can as they have been doing it for awhile. The others used to, just not in the last 7 years.

And our D-line looked every bit as good as Alabama's. As far as the academics and graduation rates go, the others can say whatever they wish, but none of them are as good as ours. I believe that has been documented. I think there are 3 or 4 who are better than we are, but I'm pretty sure none of those schools are among them, and Alabama certainly has no claim to any academic elitism.

Alabama's graduation rates are actually pretty impressive lately, especially when you consider the volume of early departures to the NFL.

We have a better shot with him than many on here and in the media think. We will know whether he is visiting Clemson or Bama soon. This kid is a beast of a player and it sounds like his Mom wants what is best for him. If we get him to visit, I like our chances. We have the best closer in the business running our program.

I wouldn't say that... She wants to see 1 more official (hopefully us). If we aren't even and we do get him on campus all bets are off. We will be dead even if not leading if he makes it for an official. Michigan better pray that Bama gets the OV because Clemson is tough to beat with a last minute OV, Dan Brooks, Venables, Swinney, high GPR, top 20 university and a relative right down the road.

You have to remember to a mom a coach is great but family is better. What happens when a better job or a conflict of interest arises for the coach? He is going to pick the thing best for his family. Gary's uncle on the other hand has no real ties to Clemson so Rashan would be the priority.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: New Story: Clemson coaches visit Rashan Gary: Can Tigers nail down official visit?

Jan 20, 2016, 3:04 PM

His mom's tone at the beginning of this seemed to leave me feeling desperate but by the end, particularly the very end, I think we have a real shot with Rashan. I do find it interesting that she's less interested in academics than she is about football and/or the "collegiate experience". But I love that she said "why not Clemson?" more than once and mentioned her brother being closer to her son than his former coach. Whatever the defensive coaches said last night to him and his mother, I truly hope it was enough to get him on campus. I think once they set foot on campus a second time, for the full Clemson experience, compounded with their family around campus / up the road - it's a sure lock.

Go Tigers! Who wants to be in Tuscaloosa wearing Crimson anyway?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: New Story: Clemson coaches visit Rashan Gary: Can Tigers nail down official visit?

Jan 20, 2016, 6:44 PM

She didn't say she was more interested in football than academics. She said she doesn't want to hear about the academics from the football coach. She wants to hear that from the professors and people on the academic side. I can't totally understand that. I'm sure she doesn't want the calculus professor telling her about the football program.

military_donation.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: New Story: Clemson coaches visit Rashan Gary: Can Tigers nail down official visit?

Jan 20, 2016, 10:03 PM

The coaches talk to the moms about graduation rates, not derivatives. And while a calculus professor may be able to talk to you about mathematical academics, or a tutor talk to you about tutoring services, he/she may not implicitly know about academics as they relate to the football program (i.e. knowing the GSR for the football team is 84% at Clemson university). I know what you're trying to say but if you read the tone of her first paragraph, you sense an almost indifference or annoying in words like, "every team talks about how they have the best graduation rates", etc. All I was saying was it started sounding indifferent then ended sounding actually quite positive in our direction.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Jan 20, 2016, 3:18 PM

A skeptic would read this article and say, "She's hinting that the highest bidder gets my son's services." If that is the case, I'm disappointed.

A different skeptic would say, "She wants the surest path to the NFL and RICHES for her son." That is not it. Definitely not it. She knows it's about ballin' and measuraebles at the combine.

I think she should be taken at face value. She wants her son to have a freaking BLAST during his college years. I LOVE that.

Now, I haven't seen pic one, but I'm sure I LOVE Jennifer Coney. I would love to hang with her. Buy her a drink. Talk about the MEMORIES she has from college. I would talk about mine, too.

I like her thinking. This kid is gonna be in the NFL. If Clowney is still on an NFL roster, forget it. Rashan is going to be a stud in the NFL. Don't talk about how many kids get drafted. Don't talk graduation rates. I want to talk about the "college experience."

Well, Ms. Coney, Clemson is a quiet, mostly rural campus with lots of beauty and tranquility to offer. Ladies? Beautiful co-eds, for sure. Cool dudes? Galore!

Now, how about we have that drink?

Dear Ms, Coney,

Jan 20, 2016, 3:19 PM

I attended Clemson beginning in 1965 and feel more strongly today than ever that those were the most valuable days of my life. The things you say that you want for your son were at Clemson in those days and certainly remain in 2016. There is something about this school that goes beyond sports and the benefits one receives from a diploma. Clemson becomes a part of your soul and screams for you to return as often as possible. Send your son here and you will never have a single regret. Believe what your relatives in Anderson have told you.(I too have relatives in Anderson who live a block from AU and they love Clemson as much as you soon will).

After reading this article a couple of observations. First, Momma is "shopping for the highest offer" also she seems to really enjoy the world hanging on her every word. Second, we don't want to have to deal with this woman. If she has raised her son half as "entitled" as it appears she has, it won't end pretty. So, let's move on and find another guy that is actually excited about a real shot at winning a national championship and not how much $$$ is flowing momma's way.

Up until now, academics has been at the forefront with her in every interview she's given. Now that the Clemson Coaches have shown that they have better graduation rates than the other teams recruiting Gary,it's the whole college experience that steps to the forefront ? Like I said, just a stupid observation that could just be a curve ball to add extra excitement to his NSD commitment .Wouldn't surprise me if he used his final visit on Bama and still came to Clemson.

I actually make a living not by reading palms but something way more telling, people's words. The way she uses them, she changes and creates the narrative she needs to insure she keeps the attention. I understand someone that has little to garner much attention in her own right now using her son's athletic ability to be loud and proud....plain and simple, it's an ego trip. She senses her time in the "spotlight" is drawing close to an end and she's making it last as long and end as dramatically as she can. It's called living vicariously through your children and to some degree we all do it. Some take it too far.

Not to be unkind my friend but I think it appropriate to point out a fundamental requirment for assessing someone's motives and behaviors. Number 1, in order to claim even a modicum of accuracy you must first MEET the person. You must have a substantive one-on-one exchange in order to develop the profile you say is based on your 'credentials'. It's called professionalism. Posting publicly an obviously un-flattering opinion of this person is pure guess work. You can try to bolster it sighting your profession, but ultimately unless and until you actually speak to them your opinion is haphazard at best and harmful and dead wrong at worse.

The most obvious alternate theory to yours is that she's just a smart and loving mother who's going to do everything she can to place her child in the best circumstance possible. As you might not be aware, most if not all parents of prospective recruits are involved with their child's recruiting process and choices. She just happens to be the parent of the #1 recruit and therefore gets far more press than any others.

Go Tigers! ;)

Re: New Story: Clemson coaches visit Rashan Gary: Can Tigers nail down official visit?

Jan 20, 2016, 4:06 PM [ in reply to Re: New Story: Clemson coaches visit Rashan Gary: Can Tigers nail down official visit? ]

I didn't get the feeling of her wanting $$$$. I don't think that's what it is about. I do think that she likes the attention though.

She was all over the place on those comments. First she says that all the schools say the same thing about graduation rates and how they would coach and use Gary. Then she says that she doesn't want to hear about academics from football coaches, she only wants them to talk football. Then she says that college is about getting a degree and not about football. WHAT????

Then she talks about how Clemson is in it and that she has always heard great things, but didn't get a full visit when they came, due to timing, yet might not take another visit. So if Clemson gets 1/2 a visit and Michigan gets 5 visits, of course people are going to think that Michigan is leading Clemson.

I don't know the woman so I can't speak with any certainty, but she seems very similar to KJ McDaniel's mom.

Jan 20, 2016, 4:15 PM [ in reply to Re: New Story: Clemson coaches visit Rashan Gary: Can Tigers nail down official visit? ]

I think you are taking a very big leap by assuming that an actively engaged mother of a football recruit means that she wants $$$$. Clemson University is big enough to handle all the questions his mother wants to ask. I hope all the questions are answered so that he can find the situation that is right for him to excel. If it is at Clemson, we will celebrate. If not, we will continue to excel with the players that we have.

Regardless of what they decide to do, or what school they decide to pick, Clemson will be good either way. We just played for the NC, minus a trick play and a couple of mistakes we are NC, and we are already a top 20 public University!!! Go Tigerssss!!!

They will take the visit to Clemson. Family is important and with all the good things and being close to his mom's brother - yep they come to Clemson. Blood is thicker than water!

You can not go to a better well rounded university and play a sport. Academics, atmosphere and the people will draw you back to Clemson the rest of your life. I can not wait to retire and move to the Clemson area. Be a part of the Tiger Football experience. It would be a pleasure to watch you run down the hill on game day.

Some say Saban might try out the NFL again and maybe Kiffin takes over?? Ole Jim is pulling scholarships left and right.

Dabo and BV have been upfront and have less blemishes. Mom knows best and WE do too ;)

I like that his mom is very involved. Fits right in with our program.
The coaching staff at Clemson loves these kids and they love the coaching staff.
Recall she said "it isn't all about football."
Dabo has said over and over again that he wants the kids to make sure they have fun as well.
That pizza party was pretty cool and I believe that family and parents like to know that their children will get a good education, play some quality football and HAVE FUN!

I hope he comes to Clemson...there are so many players In Alabama that are sitting on the bench instead of in the game. This young man would make an instant impact. Hope he comes to Clemson... Go Tigers. Can see him running down the hill in a Clemson Uniform. If he comes to Clemson he will get a good coaching staff and he will have got academics. Go Tigers!!!!!!!

We will know this weekend if He will take an official visit. I hope that he and his mom take the visit to Clemson and get all questions answered, both academically, as well as a meeting with the entire Coaching Staff. Then, he can make an informed decision. I hope to see him wearing CLEMSON ORANGE! GO TIGERS!!!

Mom has to sign off any school he chooses, so she does have a big say!
