Boys, for FIFTY years I have been watching the ACC refs

ATT00009.jpg(117.8 K)

screw US OVER AND OVER. I say with a straight face, THEY HAVE STUCK IT TO US more than any single team in the conference...and they did it again last night. I say this with a straight face, no poster on here has bemoaned the ACC refs more than me. Lenny Wertz was the first in the line of many, in multiple sports.I am sure many on here can recall screwings we received way before Tree Rollins, but that is when I started getting my education. 3 fouls in the first 90 secs in the ACC tourny on TREE...Bogus non fumbles against North Carolina that gave them the title over us,the horrendous personal fouls in the GT game in Atlanta where if we touched Joe Hamilton it was roughing the passer, but when they picked WOODY up a yard and a half out of bounds and dumped him on his head,no call. The famous Maryland TD in the Valley where I honestly thought Danny was going to whip three refs ##### on National TV, the very week after THEY stuck it to us in Raleigh against the WOlfpack, the PHANTOM holding calls that against GT that sewed up not only two consecutive games, but also the ACC title for GT..the unbelievably bad game against PITT where just one of the BS calls was when Bouleware got a personal foul for TACKLING TOOO HARD (I KID YOU NOT, that is what Dabo said they told him), the discontinued baseball game in Durham against DUKE where the allowed DUKE NOT TO PUT A TARP ON THE FIELD SO THE RAIN COULD RUIN THE FIELD(WE just took the lead in the top of the 10th I believe on a SUNDAY...game was called, knocking us back in the tourney)...The ridiculous TIME KEEPING crap in the DUKE basketball game where they put 3.9 seconds back on the clock at the end of the game. Play started with 4.9 seconds I think, where we inbounded the ball to a player right in front of the 3 point line(we were down 2)..said player looked down, dribbled and took a step back behind the line, shot a 3 for us to take the lead and POINT 7 seconds showed on the clock. GAME OVER IN ALL CERTAINTY, but after review,ACC refs said that I Just descreibed took ONLY .7 seconds...(The very next time we played DUKE at home, I took my frustrations out on the ACC,pic attached)

I am sure many of you can add to this rant....AND THEN LAST NIGHT, they stuck it to us again, throwing their own PRIDE AND JOY, NORTH CAROLINA, under the bus. The non-interference on the pass in the endzone LATE started it...but I knew State had it in the bag when they called the roughing the passer on the last possession.....NO CONFERENCE HAS WORSE OFFICIATING THAN THE ACC. NO ONE.

IMHO of course. WELL, today, the TIGERS clearly play just for pride. It has been a lonnnnnng time since that happened. A LONNNNNNNNG TIme.

Go get'em Boys!!!

Which conference supplies the refs the game tonight?

We do. ANd they have screwed US in Columbia too. Not

Nov 27, 2021, 7:48 AM

kidding. I mentioned the other day they gave Phil Petty a yard on a 4th and 1 on about our 30 yardline where we absolutely stuffed him. Did not have review back then. BUT I SWEAR ON HOWARD's ROCK he was a yard short. If anyone has the game on tape, you can clearly see it.Coots were going from left to right on the tv screen on about our 30. Coots ran an opion to this side and Petty kept it, got stoned....refs walked up and marked a yard past where he got. You can bet your first born on that. I will be shocked if the help us tonight.

Dude. The most pathetic post I’ve read in years. WE and only WE “stuck it to us.” Championship caliber teams don’t rely on teams that beat our a s s to lose. An they certainly don’t rely on refs in games we’re not playing in. Geez…… we sucked this year. Own it and move on. You sound like one of my kids blaming the teacher for a bad grade. Right answers always get As and beating ALL teams in your conference always wins championships. SMH

myself who have been to MANY, MANY games can attest. And yes, we blew it in Raleigh this year. Absolutely we did. But the officiating stands for itself.

Here is one I can prove easily...

By the way, on that play...First, the 25 second clock

expired before the play, then the guard jumped before the play, then the receiver CLEARLY dropped the pass.....

Attended this game and can attest to the fact that he never had possession. Had a good field-level view of it.

I just love ramblers who blame the officiating on games he thinks we got screwed ,but fails to mentioned even one time where we might have screwed somebody and got away with it.
It happens And to the best and the worst of them.
And if the only reason you are watching the game tonight is for pride, may I suggest a Hallmark Channel Christmas movie.

Yeah I would say it’s a massive stretch to think the refs were trying to screw Clemson by screwing UNC?? The Heels blew that game because ,well, it’s what we do.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I didn't say they were tying to do that , but the effect was

Nov 27, 2021, 8:05 AM

the same.......That roughing the passer call against Leary...was even worse than the one they called on Tyler this year that gave the Wuffies a first down on 3rd and long....

Re: I didn't say they were tying to do that , but the effect was

Nov 27, 2021, 8:10 AM

Oh I agree that call was especially awful. I ref’s hurt but the loss is entirely on the players and coaches. It’s funny because as UNC fans we immediately start going through late game scenarios in our minds as to how we can creatively lose. You got to admit last night was classically creative.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Mack lost it on 1st and goal from the 4. 24 was running all

Nov 27, 2021, 8:25 AM

over them....and he throws 3 straight times....Reminded me of the year the Heels left #8 on the sideline on their last drive to try and beat the Coots. He had been killing the coots all night and they left him on the bench and lost the game...

Don't think it had anything to do with Clemson, but UNC got screwed nevertheless.

and my Tigers. Many, many years, that is all we had. I have been in the stands when you could read CLEMSON in the upper deck......It hasn't always been this gravy train we have been on for the past 7 years....Did not realize playing for pride was bad. Most of us who played sports, PLAYED ONLY FOR PRIDE.

I was at the turtle game too. He never had possession of the ball.! Everything you pointed out is Spud on. Refs job is to call the game fair and not to determine the out come of the game. Anytime a Clemson coach decides to address the issue and file a complaint, the letter is atomically forwarded to the dead letter file in Greensborough. BTW ACC refs call the game tonight so be prepared for holding calls on us, mysterious pass interference calls. But by GOD by gum we are still going to win!

And how about the time our best basketball team ever

Nov 27, 2021, 9:25 AM

finished the game with four players on the court in Chapel Hill?

I am compelled to point out that we had lost by one in Durham three days prior, and the #1 Blue Devils would play the #2 Tar Heels three days after. Couldn’t have upstart Clemson ruining the ACC’s marquee match up.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Hansbro shot 34 foul shots in that game. They could not

Nov 27, 2021, 2:14 PM

score from the field, so the ACC refs took over and put them on the line 60 times I think in that game. Hansbro shot more free throws than our entire team. ........and remember "Thigh Pad Gate".....just another mistreatment by the ACC....but, they did correct is AS SOON AS PICS WERE POSTED OF THE HEELS practicing in the same pads........

Re: Ah yes the TNet tradition of claiming the refs are out to get Clemson.

Nov 27, 2021, 1:03 PM

First off, if you don't believe the refs were out to get us back in the 70's, you weren't alive. We had the reputation as cheaters--only somewhat deserved, and partly because we were forced into it, because we weren't allowed to compete fairly in some cases..

Why do you think we have so many cameras at all sporting events--including college football games--now than back in the 70's?

For entertainment alone? NO.

For ACCOUNTABILITY.

Officiating in general has greatly improved in the last generation--rules have been clarified and standardized, technology has been upgraded by a factor of 10, coaching techniques have been taught that fit within the rules,, refs themselves have been required to improve their job knowledge, vision and personal fitness--but in spite of that, sometimes they are still the least professional or competent persons on the field.

They are also sometimes the lowest paid persons on the field, depending on the level of competition.

There is also a shortage of them, because it's not a career job.

And there is no integrity test for them, so if someone is corrupt, it's up to their coworkers to catch it and stop it so the whole crew doesn't lose credibility.

All of which implies that sometimes the refs ARE against you, or at least one of a crew might be.

I don't say any of this lightly. My dad's pastor was one of the leading HS refs in the state of SC until his recent retirement. Numerous NCAA referees attend his church "when they can" (like Easter). Another friend just became certified in SC HS sports to supplement his insurance agency income. The majority of officials are more honorable than the players and coaches and parents.

But if they were all so honorable in the first place, why did they need to improve?

I’m with Spud……it’s crooked, but I don’t think it’s about sticking it to Clemson. I think it’s about gambling.

Coaches break the rules, we know that, it’s indisputable, it’s documented, it’s been going on forever.
Players break the rules, no question about it.
We’re supposed to believe that officials are incorruptible?
We’re supposed to believe that a sports gambling industry with billions of dollars at its disposal is not impacting sporting outcomes?
Well……I was born……but it wasn’t yesterday and I don’t believe in fairytales anymore.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

That Duke basketball game was a classic ACC screw job.

Nov 27, 2021, 1:33 PM

But not surprising. Clemson needs to know its place in the Tobacco Road basketball hierarchy.

It is infuriating that we have financially subsidized these programs over the years.

Lutz. Sounds like one big excuse. How do you know that

Nov 27, 2021, 5:27 PM

they've stuck it to us more than any team in the ACC unless you've walked in UMD and Lefty Driesel's shoes, or UVA and Terry Holland's, or SC and Frank McGuire's even.

Yea, we've gotten screwed through the years in basketball by the refs. All star teams with star coaches get some calls.

The thing is there is no conspiracy against us. Yea, we've gotten screwed some, but it ain't no foregone plan to screw us by the ACC.

Last night had nothing to do with us.

Bravo, not one mention of yourself in third person. Good job!!

I actually agree with most of your post. We've been effed over quite a bit. You missed the called TD in Death Valley under Tommy Bowden against Maryland when the ball clearly bounced on the ground. Even after review was called a TD. The two phantom holds against GT where on the center. Name escapes me, but those were the only two "holds" in his career.

Hope for a win and a clean officiated game tonight
