9 years ago, 2013: Two “pressure Cooker” bombs explode at

Aug 27, 2022, 9:27 AM

the Boston Marathon, killing 3, and injuring 264. Two Chechnyain brothers who had become radical Islamic extremists are eventually caught by police, with one of them being killed. The other was found hiding in a boat in a residential neighborhood. Lance Armstrong finally admits to Doping in all his Tour de Dope wins in an interview with Oprah Winfrey.

In what would become increasingly more prevalent, there was a huge cyber security breach of the Target retail stores computer systems, exposing their customer information to hackers and scammers. A powerful meteor explosion in Russia injures 1,500 people, and damages several thousand buildings. A massive EF-5 tornado hits Moore, Oklahoma, destroying the town, including an elementary school, killing 23 people and injuring hundreds of others.

The 2013 ACC Champions, and also the BCS National Champions, were the 14-0 Florida State Seminoles of Coach Jimbo Fisher. This team put up huge offensive numbers all year. They defeated No. 20 Duke 45-7 to win the ACC Championship Game. They outlasted the No. 2 Auburn Tigers of 1st year Head Coach Gus Malzahn 34-31 to win the Rose Bowl / BCS Championship Game. It was their only close encounter of the year. More on that later.

Of note, Auburn got TO that game by apparently having a school bus sized rabbit's foot in their pocket. In their next to last game of the regular season, a pass deflected by a Georgia defensive back tumbled into the hands of an Auburn receiver for the winning touchdown, 43-38. The very next week, against No. 1 Alabama in the Iron Bowl, the game was tied 28-28, and appeared to be headed to overtime, when Bama coach Nick Saban browbeat the officials to get a second put back on the clock so his team could attempt a 57 yard field goal.

It came up short, and Auburn's Chris Davis ran it back for a touchdown in what will forever be immortalized as the “Kick Six”. Delirious Auburn football announcers proclaimed “He ran the missed field goal back! He ran it back 109 yards! Auburn's gonna win the football game! Auburn's gonna win the football game,! You're not gonna keep them off the field TONIGHT!” After those kinds of things, Auburn winning the SEC Championship Game over No. 5 Missouri 59-42 was almost an afterthought. Oh, and Chris Davis will never have to buy a drink for the rest of his life, as long as there is an Auburn fan around.

Clemson came into 2013 still riding the high from the thrilling bowl win over LSU to end 2012. And, there would be no easing into the season with a cupcake opponent. Instead, the resumption of an Old South rivalry, as the No. 8 Tigers welcomed the No. 5 Georgia Bulldogs to town. College Gameday was in town, and the game did not disappoint. The game was tied at 7, 14, 21, and 28, before Clemson finally broke on top to stay, with a 24 yard field goal by Catanzaro near the end of the 3rd quarter. We followed this up with an 87 yard drive, culminating in a 9 yard TD pass from Tajh Boyd to Stanton Seckinger. The PAT put Clemson up 38-28. Georgia would get a late touchdown with just over a minute remaining, making the final score Clemson 38, Georgia 35.

We were up to No. 4 for a cupcake game against SC State, where we emptied the benches, and cruised 52-13. Still No. 3 for the first road trip of the year, Clemson was more workmanlike in a 26-14 over NC State. The Wuffies led early 7-6, but Clemson scored 20 unanswered points before a garbage time TD by State provided the final score. But, starting the next week, the Clemson offense got going. The Tigers blew out Wake Forest 56-7 in the Valley, and went on the road to the Carrier Dome to snuff out Syracuse 49-14. A workmanlike 24-14 win over a defensively tough Boston College team in Death Valley set up a No. 3 Clemson vs No. 5 Florida State matchup, with College Gameday again in Tigertown.

FSU had a freshman QB named Jameis Winston, who was doing great things on the field, and not so great things off the field. He brashly made a pregame speech that was caught by the ESPN cameras, where he declared, “We ain't leaving here today without a victory!” Unfortunately for Clemson, the game was played ON the field, where Winston was a man of his word. He threw for 444 yards and 3 touchdowns, as Florida State dominated the game, winning 51-14. As I said earlier, FSU put up huge offensive numbers against every opponent this year, with the 34-31 win over Auburn in the Natty their only close game. Jameis Winston would win the Heisman Trophy for 2013.

So, Clemson was left to start over again, and the now No. 9 Tigers did just that, reeling off four high scoring wins in a row. Maryland fell on the road 40-27, and then we took out Virginia on the road as well, 69-10. We returned to the Valley for two more easy wins, as the now No. 8 Tigers took down Georgia Tech 55-31, and, up to No. 7, we took out Cupcake #2 on the season, The Citadel, by a score of 52-6. This set up something that had never happened before, a meeting of Top Ten teams in the Palmetto Bowl, as No. 6 Clemson traveled to The Roach to face the No. 10 South Carolina Gamecocks. This, in my opinion, was Steve Spurrier's best ever team at South Carolina, even though they did not even win their division in the SEC. They had lost by two points to No. 9 LSU in Tiger Stadium, and to Spurrier's old school, No. 3 Florida, in The Swamp, their only bad game of the season, 44-11.

South Carolina was going for an unprecedented fifth win in a row in the series, and Gamecock fans had already been insufferable for at least 3 years. Of all the games in their “Five Bomb” streak, this one is the one that I think Clemson let get away. We had as many weapons as they did, but they had Jadeveon Clowney, who without a doubt had gotten into Tajh Boyd's head.

South Carolina also had their senior QB Connor Shaw in this game, his having missed the previous year with injuries. He started the Gamecocks out with a 17 play, 57 yard TD scoring drive that took over 8 minutes off the clock. Clemson took only 1:38 to answer with a 4 play, 75 yard drive, Tajh Boyd going the last 8 yards on a run, to knot the game 7-7. So, Connor Shaw decided to prove that Carolina could strike quickly as well, and they did, in 5 plays 39 yards, taking only 01:26 to score a TD early in the 2nd quarter, to go back on top 14-7. Elliot Fry hit a later field goal to push the lead out to 17-7, but the Tigers answered back on the last play of the 1st half with a Catanzaro field goal to make it 17-10 at halftime.

Coming out in the 2nd half, Clemson held Carolina scoreless early in the 3rd quarter, and got a long drive of our own, 15 plays, 88 yards, culminating in a Rod McDowell TD from 4 yards out, to tie the game at 17-17. The game ultimately turned on a 4th and 1 on the Gamecock 34, where they suckered Deshawn Williams offside to gain a crucial 1st down, instead of having to punt. A later PI penalty on Clemson also aided the drive, which ultimately culminated in the go ahead TD on a 2 yard Mike (The Traitor) Davis run with 11:47 to go in the game.

Clemson was driving on the next possession, but a Tajh Boyd fumble at the South Carolina 30 was recovered by the defense. The Clemson defense eventually forced a punt, but it was fumbled by Adam Humphries after an 8 yard return, setting up the Gamecocks on the Clemson 34. From there, it only took Connor Shaw 3 plays to find the end zone for the game clinching touchdown, 31-17. Tajh Boyd would be intercepted on the next two Clemson possessions, and after the last one, South Carolina was able to run out the clock. Clemson leads the series 69-42-4.

Clemson Nation was certainly not happy about losing the 5th in a row to our hated rival, but we got a nice consolation prize. Since Florida State was off playing in the BCS National Championship Game in the Rose Bowl, the Orange Bowl was free to chose another ACC team for the ACC tie in to their game. And, they chose the now No. 12 Clemson Tigers, to face the No. 7 Ohio State Buckeyes of Coach Urban Meyer. Unlike the previous year, Sammy Watkins did not get injured in this game, and he would make his presence known.

Clemson jumped out of the gate with a 6 play 75 yard touchdown drive, with Tajh Boyd taking it the last 48 of those yards himself on a QB keeper. Bucknut QB Braxton Miller would answer with a 33 yard touchdown jaunt of his own to knot the game 7-7. And, as they say, it was ON! Next up, a 24 yard TD catch by Sammy Watkins capped a 48 second Clemson drive, to go up 14-7. But, after Clemson's defense forced a punt, Tajh Boyd was flagged for intentional grounding in his own end zone, resulting in a safety, to make the score 14-9. In the 2nd quarter, Clemson had another quick strike drive, 7 plays, 77 yards, with the last 3 a short pass for the TD to Martavis Bryant, for a 21-9 Clemson lead.

But, Braxton Miller would bring the Bucknuts back, first with a 57 yard TD strike to Jeff Heuerman, PAT failed, 21-15 Clemson. The OSU defense would hold, and on the next possession, Miller hit paydirt again, taking it the last 3 yards of the 64 yard drive himself, as Ohio State led for the first time, 22-21 after the PAT. They would go up by 9 when Carlos Hyde barreled in from a yard out to cap an 87 yard drive. OSU now led 29-21. But, this game had all the ebb and flow of a heavyweight fight, and it was about to be Clemson's turn to win some rounds.

After the OSU defense forced a Clemson punt, they fumbled it away during the return, setting the Tigers up on the Buckeye 33. Shortly after, a 30 yard Boyd to Watkins TD pass and Catman PAT got us within two at 29-27. The Clemson defense had been making life miserable for Braxton Miller most of the night, and on the next Bucknut possession, he was intercepted by Jayron Kearse, setting the Tigers up again on the Ohio State 38 yard line. Four plays later, another 3 yard Martavis Bryant TD and Catman PAT put Clemson back in front, 34-29.

But then, it was Ohio State's turn again. A 10 play, 75 yard drive, capped off by a 14 yard Braxton Miller to Carlos Hyde TD pass, putting the Buckeyes back in front, 35-34, after a two point try failed.

Clemson would answer with a long clock eating drive of 13 plays, 75 yards, eating over 5 minutes of clock, ending with a 5 yard TD pass to Stanton Seckinger. Our own two point try also failed, and the Tiger lead was 40-35. The Clemson defense forced an OSU fumble on the next drive, but just as we thought we had the game in hand, Tajh Boyd threw an ill-advised pass over the middle that was intercepted and returned 11 yards to the Clemson 48, with 1:27 to go.

Boyd looked to be almost physically ill on the sidelines, thinking he had possibly blown the Orange Bowl. But, two plays later, Stephone Anthony bailed him out, as he intercepted a Braxton Miller pass and fell to the ground with it. Finally, Clemson was able to run out the clock and claim the wild 40-35 win, our first in a “BCS” Bowl. And, as the announcers pointed out several times, Braxton Miller was a “Hurtin' Buckaroo”, who probably saw Spencer Shuey in his nightmares. Sammy Watkins finished with 227 yards in his last game as a Clemson Tiger. And now, after not having won 11 games in a season in 31 years prior to 2012, Clemson had now done it two years in a row, and three years in a row of at least 10 wins. All 2013 results of this 11-2 season below.
