I realize this probably makes me sound like a lunatic but...

Dec 12, 2012, 3:50 PM

I would rather Clemson be #1 in defense every year and have a defense that is literally feared for knocking people out than win a national championship game 63-62. I would sign a document right now that agreed to Clemson not being able to win the natty champ game for 5 years if I could guarantee that our defense was scary tough and scary strong for the next 10 years.

The late 1980's were the most SATISFYING time to be a Clemson fan since the 81 championship. Those 10 win seasons were more to be proud of because we were tough and people didn't want to play us.

I can handle losing, but I can't handle a limp-wristed defense. Crazy old person rant over.

We had a pretty good defense from 2003 to 2008 from what I recall, and again in 2010. All of the sudden our defense has turned to complete crap. Sure we did lose some great players but it's hard to understand how we've had this much of a dropoff.

To each their own

Dec 12, 2012, 3:55 PM

I can't imagine preferring to lose over win, no matter what style the team ran

Dec 12, 2012, 5:46 PM

You mean, like losing against the only teams we played all year who had decent defenses?

I think that makes his point for him.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

No, reread his post

Dec 12, 2012, 6:57 PM

He stated he would rather NOT win a MNC and have a tough D than win one with a soft D.

I simply don't get that viewpoint.

Ideally, give me both. But if we have to choose, it seems strange to me to choose the option that doesn't include the MNC.

I read it as ding me for 5 but give me 10

Dec 13, 2012, 8:40 PM

I guess he wants 5 NC chances at the end of the 10 years.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Yes. And I can enjoy the first 5 if we scare people.***

Dec 12, 2012, 3:56 PM

Clemson defense than an explosive offense but if we won a national championship 63-62, I wouldn't care one bit that our defense sucked. We would be national champs.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Offense sells tickets but defense wins championships. I just

Defense wins ball games
Offense sells tickets

How many times has ESPN stated thats an "SEC Defense", not many times have they talked about the offense other than being a power running team

Re: I realize this probably makes me sound like a lunatic but...

Dec 12, 2012, 4:01 PM

You're not a lunatic. You're spot on. It's about defense. Danny Ford was taught by Bear Bryant. Coach Bryant's formula - great defense, good kicking game and offense that doesn't turn the ball over = Clemson's one and only national championship. Nick Sabin & Les Miles uderstand Coach Bryant's formula too.

I know this to be true, I was there in 1980.

Dec 12, 2012, 5:45 PM

Would prefer not winning a MNC to winning one?

I mean, I agree entirely that I want a tough nasty defense. I think we all agree that would be ideal.

But to suggest you would take a tough nasty defense on a team which doesn't win a MNC over a softer one on a team which does win a MNC seems crazy to me.

Re: Those over 40

Dec 12, 2012, 5:48 PM

Who's the last soft team who won a MNC? That's the point.

Even Oregon 2 years ago had a pretty darned good defense. Well coached and hard-nosed if not talented.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

That may be

Dec 12, 2012, 6:35 PM

But that wasn't what the initial post said. He said he'd rather have a tough D and not win a NC than have a softer D and win one.

I’ll take a Nat. Title anyway I can get it.

Much better chance of winning it is with DEFENSE.
Don’t see any team getting to title game giving up 62 pts.

People seem to have forgotten that HITTING is what made football popular.
Tough, Aggressive & Gang Tackling—Make em pay for anything they get

Rather see a goose egg on the opponents scoreboard than 70 on Clemson’s

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: I realize this probably makes me sound like a lunatic but...

Dec 13, 2012, 8:53 PM

We can. But for the most part, a ball control offense enables your defense to stay fresh, focused and hungry.

It's also a mental thing. If your defense knows that every possession matters and the offense can't march down the field and score, it's going to give them a mental edge.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Defense wins championships

your desire does not make you a nut case. The fact that you think anyone cares does! Also the last time I checked a win is a win! period! I would take the current team agianst any former team. By the way I am as much a fan when were down as when were up!
