this is tough to admit because I hate the ACC so much, but this was a huge step for the conference. It kept the ACC on par with all other conferences as far as bowl revenue, and it essentially dropped a Big East tie in. I believe it is an incredible savvy deal, which is not something we are used to seeing from the ACC.

mainly because the ACC controls the whole thing. The Rose could make more because of the tradition but they have to split between 2. The "Champions Bowl" that the SEC/Big12 will not make as much since it will likely always be a #2 playing in that game (think Cotton Bowl) and it has to be split as well.
The Sugar and Fiesta got screwed by their conferences. The ACC could step in there if the product is upgraded.
Now we just have to hope that the ACC offices don't screw it up and the ACC teams don't flop.

up when we don't know any numbers for the SEC/B12 game, which will generate huge revenues. But as a whole, with the B1G and SEC networks, the ACC will still be behind. But if the conference can step it up, with Clemson, FSU, VT, Miami, etc contending for national championships, then the ACC television deal can balloon and coupled with the OB deal the conference and schools can make a lot of money.

we didn't. Until all the other conferences settle their media rights contracts and the projection for the revenues of the playoff system are published this entire conversation is just something to pass DT.
I understand the pessimistic attitudes because of the internet talk of the ACC's poor deal with ESPiN/Raycom. I also understand why some of us look on the bright side of this thinking that if we are stuck in the ACC we should try and take a good attitude about it. That's my attitude at this time.
There are also the group of ACC pumpers, for some unknown reason to me, that enjoy saying I told you so.

is doing even though I really hate being in the conference. I was really hoping Clemson would bolt to the B12, and they still might one day. However, if not I believe this deal was a big step towards the conference competing with the traditional powers.
That being said however, I can't help but think Swoffie will still find a way to screw it up.

[ in reply to Maybe it will ... but if you think ACC will be getting more ] |

The OB will pay the ACC and a single team, unlike the other bowls who partnered with two conferences, they have to split money 50/50 because they have two conferences. The OB will have one conference and one team, meaning the non-ACC team would take maybe 10% or less of the money, giving the ACC 90% of what's left.

Bowls before were based on two conferences sending their respective teams, so it split cash. OB non-ACC won't (hopefully) have any conference affiliation, so we deal with an individual school.

So usually every year there's at least two at-large teams in BCS bowls....
If the at-large team is in a conference that has revenue sharing, we know their share is split with their conference i.e VT in 2011 Sugar.
So what you're saying is we will get 90% if, and only if, the team we play is either in a conference that doesn't do revenue sharing or a team that is independent?
I can't imagine the OB inviting an At-large from another 5 major conference and they not get equal share of the pie. And I'm assuming, until it's announced other wise, that even if it is an indendent like ND, that they will get half as well...

"Nothing has changed", that has been my point since the beginning. The only thing that has changed in college football for the ACC is that there are now two more spots available to compete for the national championship.
That's it. All of the doomsday scenarios and sensationalism was just bored people taking things too far.

Bored People as in people who are bored, not people on this board.
Two more spots available meaning you don't have to be #1 or #2 to have a chance to win a national championship as #3 and #4 now are part of a playoff.

There is a BIG difference in money
Jul 5, 2012, 10:39 AM
|
|
The ACC essentially owns the bowl now AND they can now shop the bowl around and sell the coverage to the highest bidder. As far as the teams that play in the bowl, etc. there's not going to be much of a change. BUT the ACC will rake in millions of extra dollars from the deal, and that's a huge difference.
