The overwhelming majority of sports played are amateur sports. So if amateurism for the sake of amateurism is what you want you’ll have plenty of choices.

You can watch recreational, Pop Warner, middle school, and most high school football without fear of professional athletes. Just saying that if amateurism is truly the issue you’ll have plenty of options. There has been little amateur about college football in my lifetime. The last vestige of amateurism left the Olympics 30 years ago.

College sports is (should be) about competition with the big reward being a quality college education at little or no cost. We are not talking about youth sports. Not yet anyway!

Every recruit should be fully academically qualified, meeting the same exact standards as every regular, non-athlete student. All athletes should be students first, athletes second, who take all of the same basic classes, full class loads, working toward a legitimate degree, and remain in good academic standing the entire time. Any athletic activities should have to fit in around academics, not the other way around. The main purpose of being there is to get an education, to graduate with a degree.
I know it hasn't been that way for a long, long time, if ever. But at least there was a time when we tried, or pretended to try. I'd love Clemson football every bit as much if it could be that way, with all of the trade-offs it may entail. But, I'm a realist, and I know that ship sailed long ago. I fear we are on the verge of having football players, many of whose only relationship to Clemson University may be that they wear a Clemson uniform and play for the Clemson football team. I really hate to see it come to that.
