Although we lost Paul, it was great to meet his coach...

Feb 2, 2022, 2:06 PM

I have to tell you, I really liked his style. You see, so many times, people try and use too few words when conveying a message. Maybe this is the result of social media platforms that limit the number of characters you can use. Maybe it's because we are all so busy now that brevity is required. Maybe it's something else. Whatever the case, it's a shame that something as beautiful as the English language is being short changed. I love the spoken word. I love hearing the spoken word. There is something beautiful about communication using the spoken word. Did you know scientist have determined the most pleasant word combination to the ear in the English language is "cellar door"? It is a delight to hear. Especially when rolling off the tongue of a great orator, like Morgan Freeman. If you notice, Morgan Freeman does a lot of speaking roles in documentaries. That's because of the pleasantness of his voice, it's art. It really is sad that so many are now turning from this artform in favor of type. I for one never stop a great orator. I close my eyes and listen to the subtleties of the language. The slight differences in pronunciation, the accents, the delivery. It's magical. That's why I enjoyed Paul's head coach so much. I was able to sit back for what seemed like forever and just listen to his art, his craft. That's something we can all appreciate.

And just when you thought he was done, he kept going. To me that's bonus time, like OT in football. No one wants a great game to end. And no one should want a great speech to end. With that said, I'm sad we didn't land Paul, but I do find solace in knowing we discovered a previously unknown artist at his canvas, painting the microphone with his words, treating us all to his craft. Thank you for that Andrew Paul's coach. Thank you.

In closing, I hope that we can all take a moment and reflect on our appreciation of the spoken word. Let's be committed to bringing this art form back; never abbreviating and avoiding emojis at all costs. Language is a beautiful flower that must be cared for and nurtured, let's strive to be the gardeners who do the work, so others can enjoy the fruit.

One thing that is amazing, when reading a beautiful written thing as you just posted, I can imagine the words in any voice I want. You mentioned Morgan Freeman, who has an amazing voice, but I read your post with a Carlos Mencia voice.

Wasn't it actually Edgar Allen Poe who said that "cellar door" was the most beautiful words in the English language?

Supposedly it was JRR Tolkien.

I find this information very disturbing so I double checked with that authoritative source, google, and find you are correct. In 1967 my Clemson English professor told me it was Poe. Now I'm wondering if he actually might have said that Tolkien, who was a linguist, said this in reference to a work by Poe?

Why do dogs always race to the door when the doorbell rings? It's almost never for them.
