TNET: ACC football could have even brighter future after pandemic

ACC football could have even brighter future after pandemic

While many have said it wouldn’t happen, it now appears we’re tentatively on track for college football in the fall, and the ACC could have a bright future following the pandemic. Full Story »

Agree with you about non-divisional schedule is better, BUT

Aug 1, 2020, 9:54 AM

1. There is no way it's fair for one team to have permanent games against NC State, Wake and Duke, while another has permanent games against Florida State, Virginia Tech and Georgia Tech. Just not competitively fair.

2. The ACC could have done this five years ago, but no. They said it would be too difficult, but when Notre Dame needs it done, it happens in weeks.

3. Notre Dame will never ever join any league full time in football. They are adament about that.

I agree, they have done their own thing and survived for this long, college FB would have to all but collapse before ND would join a conference to help save college FB as it's known to be. When a FB team has always had it's cake without having to share it, it's hard to convince them that they would be better off attacked to conference sharing, when only a few teams in a conference are generating most of the revenue that's being equally shared.

I'll turn 68 November 27, and when my time with the living is over, I'll be turned to ashes, and ND will still be a independent college FB team. They have the tradition, and a long history of their tradition that proves their recipe for college FB their way works for them, when most other schools have failed as an Independent!!!!

It's always been my thought that a conference team should have to earn a minimum revenue before it gets a share of the revenue that the top teams in a sport has earned. With FB being the college sport that generates the most money, it would force the slackers in that sport to get better, or earn exactly what they've earned, and nothing from the coffers of the teams that spend a lot to be better in that sport. Teams like Bama, Clemson, and the rest of the Top 10 teams spend a lot more money than the slackers do to get where they are, and that is why it would be stupid for ND to join a conference in the sport that they put the most money into, and would have to share it equally with the slackers that are laughing all the way to bank, they spend less and get an equal share!!!!

I am thired of BC, Syracuse and Wake every year, They should

Aug 1, 2020, 9:58 AM

do non-divisional and rotate the schedules completely, with one permanent rival. I'm happy with Georgia Tech as ours.

Also, the could place Florida State and Miami in the rotation at points in which every school was guaranteed to have one or the other on their schedule every year. That would help each shcool for recruiting purposes in the state of Florida.

The inclusion of Notre Dams’e NBC TV money Into the total ACC TV pool this year proves It would not be necessary to wait until 2026 for the Irish to join the ACC as a full member. Notre Dame becoming full conference member benefits all parties. To ACC and Notre Dame leaders and officials, MAKE IT HAPPEN!

I had rather see GT, FSU and Miami as permanent rivals. Don't really give .02 cents about playing VT every year. The annual games with Syracuse and BC are a Big Yawn IMO.

Playing VA Tech more would be great in my opinion ... similar schools, drivable for both, and a few years ago were regularly competing for ACC Championship.

At some point the conference needs to give upon the Atlantic and coastal divisions and go to a north and south format. The idea was that Miami and FSU would be in different divisions and play a rematch in the ACC title game. The conference even purposely had the title game in Florida a couple of years, but when that matchup didn't happen, it got moved to Charlotte and has stayed there ever since. Economicly, now after covid, should have been the time. Schools need to spend less, travel less. South division- Miami, FSU, GT, Clemson,NC State, Duke, UNC. North- WF, Louisville, UVA, VT, Pitt, BC, Syracuse. It just makes more sense. There should be a 9 games versus conference teams also. That still leaves South Carolina, an in state non division 1 opponent, and a second power 5 opponent or ND. Speaking of ND. The playoff commitee should either ban independents from the playoff, require a 13 the game , or require them to join a conference. It is not an even playing field when a team plays 12 games and the other 3 playoff proponents all played an extra game versus a division champ who is usually ranked and at a neutral site. I am in favor of the power 5 expanding to 16 teams and forcing ND's hand, and the ACC annexing West Virginia as well.

Teams like Virginia and Va Tech don't want to be stuck in

Aug 1, 2020, 11:13 AM

a northern division, far away from the recruiting grounds. Neither do the northern schools for that matter. Also, one division would be a lot more difficult than the other. That is why the zipper approach was used regarding divisions. Need to go to non-divisional whether Notre Dame ever joins or not.

You’re really screwing Wake in this alignment by placing them in a different division from their in-state brethren.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

North/South Divisions

Aug 1, 2020, 2:38 PM

Right, you can't do North/South divisions without adding 2 more teams to the north, otherwise you're forced to move a NC school into the north away from the other in-state teams, which is unfair. If you pick Wake, which you almost have to in that case (not going to take one from the triangle out). You could add Navy and ND to the north and then it works.

MINOR CORRECTION: 14 isn't divisible by 3 so you have to have 2 teams with only 2 permanent rivals. Still works fine though.

Also, STAY WITH a 11 game regular season

Aug 1, 2020, 11:17 AM

We all know we need at least an eight team playoff, and the 11 games regular season will make room for that.

As for the money agrument (loss revenue of that extra game), so be it. It can't always be about the money.

Playing the local community College (cupcake) will not be missed.

I tire of all these young boys writing articles about Clemson football. They seem to be thrilled with Notre Dames and no idea of the history of the ACC . Y'all just love some Notre Dame though! Some of us remember history and sports from more than 10 or 20 years again.

Brian and Crump, PLEASE scrutinize folks allowed to write articles for Tigernet more closely. Card them and quiz them because the more I read articles on how terrific it would be to have Notre Dame as an ACC member, the less impressed I am with these new scribes. PHUCQUE NOTRE DAME!!!!

It would be a coup for the ACC to add Notre Dame as a full football member. You don’t have to like a school to realize they would vastly help the league.

For example, I don’t like FSU but I sure am glad they are in conference with Clemson.

Fine article but would not be so hyperbolic on Wyoming

Aug 1, 2020, 6:57 PM

I would expect both I-AA James Madison and North Dakota State would give The Cowboys a serious challenge ...

Re: TNET: ACC football could have even brighter future after pandemic

Interesting but somewhat out of touch article. First, never believe economic impact figures from a city. I have no idea what an average cost of a hotel room in Clemson is but at an average of $300 for a 2 night stay, it would mean there would need to be over 2000 rooms in Clemson. Fake news that football weekends bring in $650,000. Second, there is no comparison between how the ACC and Big 12 schedule because there are 14 teams in the ACC and only 10 in the weirdly named Big 12. Easy to schedule when there are only 10 teams. Third it must bee very tough to schedule Power 5 games but it appears schools don't even try to play stronger schedules. The allure of winning is hard to lose.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

8 games, 14 teams, no divisions is the perfect solution for

Aug 2, 2020, 1:27 PM

a better regular season for all league programs and fans, no doubt.

I would stick Clemson with Ga. Tech, FSU, and NC State as the 3 more natural annual games. UNC would need to preserve its very long historical series with UVA, Duke, and NC State, but instead of every six years every school could then play each other at least 2x every four years home and away.

The ACC has a nice selection of programs overall - would love to spread it out more often like this. Imagine attending four years here and never traveling to the state of Virginia once in the fall for an away game. Nuts.
