Went with me, sat in Robert E Lee paddock. Petty won by 2 laps. I was a Fred Lorenzen fan.

NASCAR's roots are in the mountains, where moonshiners ran liquor. In the mountains, during the Civil War, most were ambivalent, or on the side of the union as there was no agriculture to speak of and little need for slaves in the mountains. And yet from those roots, NASCAR expanded to cover coastal areas and the entire southeast.

The Upstate largely sat out the war. (Relevant to Clemson, not Darlington.)
(Greenville) was a Unionist stronghold in 1850, but a combination of national events—John Brown’s Raid on Harper’s Ferry and Abraham Lincoln’s election among them—and fiery speeches supporting Secession by University President James Clement Furman and others led Greenville to vote for Secession in December 1860.
During the Civil War, the town, far removed from action in Virginia and the West, became a refuge for low country residents fleeing from federal troops. Furman and the Seminary closed, but the Female College continued operating. A women’s association created a “Soldiers’ Rest,” while nearby farms and mills supplied food and clothing to the Confederacy, and the coach factory manufactured ambulances and gun caissons. An armory on Green Avenue produced rifles.
The town’s single brush with war came three weeks after Appomattox when federal troops searching for Jefferson Davis came through Greenville. Six weeks later, President Johnson appointed Benjamin Perry provisional governor of the state.

Correct. My hillbilly great grandmother was a staunch Republican. Why?

Because the Republicans were the Union side in the War. Our people dayum sure didn’t own no slaves.

democrat his entire life. He was for smaller government, more freedom, against affirmative action, hated abortion, and by God his daddy was a democrat, and so was he. His last vote was for John Edwards. And no intervention could change his mind.
Juxtapose this with my father's family. All solid democrats before 1960. By 1970 they were all republicans.
We are in one of these eras now where parties are shifting. If you understand politics, you're never married to any party. Politics has remained consistent, through all of history. Through an infinite list of parties, worldwide.

if you wanted to see racing with LOTS of Confederate flags in the crowd, you can always go to the Elloree Trials. The last time I was there in 2018, it looked like a scene from 60s or 70s. Also saw several Clemson flags patterned after the battle flag...orange field, purple cross, and white Tiger Paws for stars. It really was a fun event, but it's DEFINITELY not the crowd you'll see at Carolina Cup, LOL. Hoping it comes back, it seems to have gotten canceled most years since then due to a lack of local organizations willing to put on and work the event from what I understand.
