All this $500-$1500 NC Ticket Pricing IS A Rip-Off

Jan 4, 2017, 3:48 PM

And I am saddened by it. For instance, Back in Jan 1982 my Family of 4 attended the Orange Bowl Parade ($15 ea), the game ($50 ea), rented a house for $400 for several days, hit the beach, had dinner at the Fountanbleu Hotel & drove to Fla & back to G'ville for oribably less than $1000.

Today that 1982 amount would probably be $2000-$2500 with inflation..while now it would cost us $4000-$5000 easy. GeeZ!

It's not 1982 anymore Bill...

How much was that Benz when it came off the showroom floor? How much would it cost today for the 2017 version?

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I'm pretty sure that even if you adjust for inflation . . .

Jan 4, 2017, 3:59 PM

the prices are still way higher, but an order of magnitude, at that.

One site I consulted said $50 in 1982 purchase should cost $125 today. Not sure if that's right or not, but you get the idea.

His Benz drove just fine without that touch screen that is required for GPS now to find your way to the grocery store. Just saying. TVs and cars needed never mix but something was required to push the price of a ride out of sight.

assuming 3% inflation a year that would make your trip $2560

and to make it even more crazy is that it will be on multiple channels to watch. 10x as many camera angles, etc.

We live in a market-driven economy, Bill. Maybe you'd prefer North Korea?

The other thing about all of this is that basic game level supply and demand has changed:

1. Demand: The fan bases for both teams are larger (attendance has increased, people live longer, more committed fans due to increased tv viewership opportunities).
2. Supply: The supply of tickets for such games has decreased (modern nfl stadiums have nicer seats with less overall capacity and more tickets are allotted to sponsors instead of teams/fan bases).

On top of that, overarching demographic issues have affected premium event pricing (Honestly not bringing this up for a political purpose). For example, there's been a concentration of wealth in this country among the top 5% to the top 1% of income earners over the last thirty-five years. That means there's a greater disparity between what those at the top are willing to pay for these kinds of premium sporting events verses what the average fan is willing to pay.

Where are you seeing tickets for 500?

Jan 4, 2017, 4:00 PM

At this rate I'd jump on those in a heart beat.

And back then Danny was paid what, 200,000 a year ? Dabo gets 4mil? That's all you need to know about what's happened to college football

Was that when the price of a loaf of bread was $0.10?

"Gamecocks aren’t ready to take college football by storm just yet. They’re not even ready to compete in their own state – Clemson will still own the territory. Gamecocks fans would be smart to keep their heads buried until that time. Avoid talking trash to a much better Clemson program.” -Dustin Tackett

The value of a good education is inestimable.

Yes, the price of a ticket and trip to the National Title game is enormously inflated over the price from 1981. But a great many of us went to Clemson and got a great education. We then got great jobs, became titans of industry and commerce and made really big money. We'll be flying down to Tampa in our private jets, staying at very nice waterfront estates costing us tens of thousands per night and sitting in the very best seats in the stadium all the while wearing our orange bib overalls from way back in the day.

What's your problem?

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-15yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

If everyone refused to go

Jan 4, 2017, 7:14 PM

The ticket prices would come down and then everyone could buy them? Is that the way it works? I have to call my econ professor to double check this market economy thing.
