The commissioner seems like a good man in a really tough position. He’s inherited some very poor business decisions made by the conference and it’s members.

Really hard to have a positive outlook for the conference given the realities of the situation.

I’ve also yet to hear a single person defend the length of the GOR the conference and it’s members agreed to.

2024 purple level memberbadge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I still don’t get it either.

Jul 20, 2022, 11:50 AM

What were we (Clemson) thinking when we signed it?

What was the logic? There had to be a compelling argument other than we had to stop other conferences poaching? If that was it, then it was horribly flawed because it didn’t do anything to stop all the other conferences poaching to get a bigger piece of the pie while the ACC withered.

I have to believe we are smarter than this, and that there must be a way out of the GOR.

Re: TNET: ACC Commish delivers pointed remarks about state of the ACC

Jul 20, 2022, 1:22 PM [ in reply to Re: TNET: ACC Commish delivers pointed remarks about state of the ACC ]

No one will defend the length of the GOR because they made a bad deal and got out-negotiated by ESPN. That's what happens when you panic about getting a deal done because you are late to the party and all the other major conferences have already locked up network deals. They screwed the pooch and have no easy way out unless they can get ESPN to re-negotiate the GOR and the ACC may not even want to do that because that is the only thing keeping their key teams from bolting to other conferences.

My biggest fear is they will force everyone to stay in the ACC and when teams like Clemson start to take a hit in recruiting and lose their edge because recruits want to play with the big boys who carve out their own national championships, the damage will be done and it will be too late to really do anything about it.

Jul 20, 2022, 1:29 PM [ in reply to Re: TNET: ACC Commish delivers pointed remarks about state of the ACC ]

This guy is worse. The length of GOR was and is, stupid.

University presidents and others without real business experience get slaughtered when they deal with shark businessmen.

I hope and pray, we are talking with the SEC. There is a decent chance we could sue to get out of the GOR due to the vagueness in the GOR. EVEN if we lose, the increase in money would more than pay a net increase even after paying the GOR.

This Commissioner is in over his head.

Jul 20, 2022, 1:40 PM [ in reply to The commish flubbed! ]

That’s what I noticed. I wonder if that was an intentional Freudian slip. All these dudes are political bureaucrats, so talking about one thing, while secretly trying to do another, is usually par for the course. I wouldn’t be surprised if the ACC didn’t announce they’re adding two more schools, and the 17 number comes in because, as will always be the case, Notre Shame will not join the ACC or any other conference. However, the Commish still had to include them because there’s always that hope, but it ain’t happening. My guess is West Virginia will be one. Who do you think might be the other, or what two do you think?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: The commish flubbed!

Jul 20, 2022, 1:47 PM

West Virginia had been a target for the ACC before. It wouldn't be the most glamorous addition considering what the SEC and BIG 10 just did. But unless the ACC brings in at least one big splash school, it's going to stay in the "middle class" neighborhood for a long time. I honestly couldn't say which school would be that exciting to come over. We're not going to poach the SEC or BIG 10.

Not sure what some of you wanted him to say

Jul 20, 2022, 1:21 PM

The question about why did the ACC not agree with the Sankey proposed guaranteed spot 12 team playoff?

But given that wasn't asked, his comnents are spot on regarding community health. Not sure how 2 super conferences benefits ESPN or other media outlets. Having a bigger spread of competitive teams should mean more viewership.

Re: Not sure what some of you wanted him to say

Jul 20, 2022, 1:34 PM

I think the reason the ACC didn’t want av12 team playoff is that they voted last year… We were down last year and how would it look to have a 12 team playoff without an ACC rep. We would look stupid and it would have had a Huge impact on recruiting, at least IMHO

The ACC, Pac-12, and B1G all voted "no" because they wanted to expand the playoff when the media contract went out to open bid, rather than gifting an under-valued extension to ESPN.

Sounds like manager trying to justify why he's still needed

Jul 20, 2022, 2:02 PM

I can understand why he wants to keep his cushy administrative job, but the question remains whether the ACC benefits Clemson now and 5, 10, 15 years down the road.
I mean, can a company really say, "In everything EXCEPT revenue, we're doing great!"

“There needs to equitable options for everyone and 2-3 conferences is inequitable.”

“All options are on the table for the ACC.”

Talking out of both sides of his mouth.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

"All options on the table" means ...

Jul 20, 2022, 2:57 PM

The ACC doesn't have a clue what's going to happen or how to manage the new college football landscape and the huge revenue gap being created by BIG and SEC expansion. Phillips spent a lot of time kissing ESPN'S backside, and that's a big red flag to me. Phillips' speach and response to current events was in a word, "weak."

Jul 20, 2022, 3:30 PM

Well said. A conference is so much more than football and so much more than 1 or 2 schools. College athletics are not not broken, Clemson is most certainly not broken and the ACC if not broken. Looking to a great 22-23 athletic season and more championships.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Clueless

Jul 20, 2022, 3:50 PM

But what else can he say? Phillips is an Illinois, Arizona and Tennessee grad and long time Northwestern/B1G employee with no history in the ACC.

Clemson appears to give up most of our bowl, TV and playoff money to fund the crappy athletic depts of the ACC. No quid pro quo. And these ACC schools incl. UVA, UNC, Duke are very vocal bragging about the size of their trust funds (especially in comparison to Clemson & FSU).

The GOR was the worst thing could have happened and a bad deal set up by the former commish and ACC board. As for Notre Dame it would be a great benefit for the ACC to ge them in as a full member which should have been done initially.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: TNET: ACC Commish delivers pointed remarks about state of the ACC

He's in a bad situation and is being a politician by talking and saying nothing. He kept talking about everyone being in this together regarding the health of college sports, that ship has sailed. He said they are looking at other revenue sources besides TV money, not sure what's out there but let's hope he figures something out.

There should be no gated communities, conferences should remain modest. WRONG. Work hard and be better than others (SEC/BIG) and you’ll reap the rewards. Come to Jesus moment from years of miss management from Greensboro.

Re: TNET: ACC Commish delivers pointed remarks about state of the ACC

Jul 20, 2022, 5:04 PM

IMHO Clemson has a big problem... that is that it is in the ACC at all.. how did the leadership here sign away it's grant of rights for 20 years? That shows a lack of vision and common sense. We alumni and non-alumni fans alike should demand and accept nothing short of the resignation of anyone from our University that supported/voted for that jack #### decision... a message needs to be sent. The only way we could possibly escape this GoR prison that I can see is to dissolve the conference which the little leaches like Duke, WF, etc will fight to the death... There needs to be a clear message to the Clemson administration to get us out of this garbage deal.

Tough talk for ACC Commish without discussing their inability to sign “ACC School just in other sports” Notre Dame? Without that actually said nothing at all.

ACC together vision, lack of revenue-pretty simple get your so called partner to officially join ACC and all this powerful future talk might be accurate. Without another football power like that this speech becomes all a joke. How much more would any network offer for an ACC without ND?? Don’t see it. Revenue as his only thing that he could not list as strength is actually a pretty big one item nowadays. It is a huge item in operating in competing, recruiting, nil now. As far as gated communities, when thousands of athletes enrolled at UNC were enrolled in fake classes and no major ncaa penalty came, you might want to check the front of your property as that may sound like you have a gated community too with that special treatment. Good talk for a few year delay until ND and other moves occur and ACC can’t last by current model of Powerhouse Clemson but few other National market competitive teams beside them in ACC. If ND does not fully commit to ACC the rest slowly crumbles and a few schools that are wanted by espn and other conferences will go regardless of this speech.

So you mention gated community

Jul 20, 2022, 11:46 PM

ACC was like $675 million last year, pac 12 around 300 million, big 12 around 450 million, big 10 like 550 million or something but you try to paint a picture of the two super conferences being gated and everyone else is the common folk. Hard not to paint ACC with same brush then based on these numbers. Get a $100 million per year revenue for Clemson and we will stick around otherwise your ignoring the reality that is coming in 2-3 years.
