All in Cookout/Realignment/ Bolting for greener pastures

Jul 26, 2021, 1:49 PM

Sorry for the delay, but there is a LOT going on right now. I will start with the Cookout - I know people are used to commitments and a lot of information coming out, and it was pretty evident early on that this was an intimate affair with some of the priority targets. Based on the non-committed players in attendance, I didn't really expect a whole lot of big news. As I've said over and over, this class is delayed in many respects because no one was able to take visits last year for games, or take any visits at all, until June 1 this year. Players want official visits. They want game-day atmosphere. And they want the chance to see multiple places before making a decision. This has just been a weird 17 months or so on the recruiting front, but we should start to see more normal once the games start. As far as the returns, still working on stories. I know WR Andre Greene had a great time. He and his parents were leaving campus yesterday (and he told me he was ready for a nap) when they had a change of plans and he wound up at Coach Swinney's house. They stayed until 10:30 or so. But he also said he thinks he will be at UNC's recruiting event next weekend. I've texted with Jaedyn Lukas all morning, and he will decide Wednesday between Clemson and UNC. Other than that, not a lot of big news.

Now, here is what has kept me occupied - the news of realignment and expansion. I had to take off the recruiting hat the last few days and I've ruined my phone's battery trying to keep on top of things. This feels different than all of the talk back in 2012 (I miss York Tiger), when there were rumors aplenty. But I was told then that there was no substance to those rumors. I am not being told that now. In fact, I reached out to one source at Clemson (who would know), and I was told to "be patient" with the process. I do THINK that there are talks and conversations being had about either realignment or expansion. I've also been told that Notre Dame is content to sit back and let it all unfold before making any decisions because they are in a great spot.

I was told earlier today that the ACC Athletic Directors had a call last night (not sure if it was scheduled in advance or not), and my media friends across the conference tell me that their ADs are quiet. Does that mean Clemson chases Penn St and Notre Dame? Or some other school like West Virginia, who I have been told is in panic mode and reaching out to everyone. Will the B1G make a move to poach schools? I don't think anyone knows at this point. I think a lot of people, like me, are using up their phone batteries (Like ADs and school presidents) trying to get this figured out.

Sorry for the dearth of recruiting info, but once I figured out it was going to be a fairly quiet weekend I stayed on the expansion and realignment stuff while keeping the text lines open with recruits. I had one colleague tell me that the SEC is driving this, perhaps to make an NFL-like 32-team super league, but is having to go slow because of antitrust laws.

I think this all bears watching. If you have questions, drop them, and I will try and answer between feedings (the 6-month old), changing diapers (the 6-month old), and potty training (the two-year old).

1. What food items were served at the cookout?

2. When will the updated 2021 football schedule be released with the new expansion teams on it? And will this delay the mailing of season tickets?

Thx

Why do dogs always race to the door when the doorbell rings? It's almost never for them.

Thank you David.

For those who think and that includes all College athletic officials in the various conferences, and fans, that what is now transpiring has not changed the FB landscape over night are still asleep.

I agree, and so do a lot of in the know college sports figures, that this is just the first move by the SEC to control college FB. The time just happens to be ripe for them to make the move. Timing is everything in catching your competitors by surprise and making them react instead of being proactive. The SEC has been working on this for at least 6 months or more. This did not just happen over night. There is just too much money and power at stake to not secure the upper hand and the biggest slice of the pie. That's what the SEC is doing and now every one else is on defense. I'd rather be in the SEC's position than in any other position right now. I think the SEC has decided that they are not going to be hamstrung by NIL, but are going to control it to their benefit. Get as many of the top FB programs under the control of the SEC and you control the effects of NIL. Smart thinking and move by SEC.

Thanks for the post. One line I'd like to comment on:

*******
I think a lot of people, like me, are using up their phone batteries (Like ADs and school presidents) trying to get this figured out.
*******

Presidents, ADs and their ambassodors, have to be doing their due diligence. Like fans checking message boards and hitting refersh every 10 minutes, these guys are probably calling their counterparts at other schools saying, "What have you heard? What do you think is going on? What are y'all thinking about doing? Will you let me know as soon as you hear anything?"

Then, hang up and call another school and ask the same thing.

Lather, rinse, repeat.

I'm not missing the days of remote-work for myself! We have a 5-1/2 year old, 4-1/2 year old, soon-to be 3 year old and 2 month old at the house. Outnumbered 5 to 1 at the house as not a single one of them has a Y chromosome. Much quieter at the office... Keep up the good work DavidHood®! Love the parenting summaries on FB, too.

Is there any credibility of the talk Clemson may leave ACC or do you think Clemson wants to stay in ACC and expand?
