up to here with the sec crap.he is spot on.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I've had some unpleasant jobs in the past.

Sep 18, 2013, 12:54 PM

Once I had to make a tiein to a live wasteline on the fourth floor of Greeville Hospital. I was the PM over the job but I had to be there when my plumbers actually did the work. We all got chitfaced cause that was part of the job.

Unlike almost all of ESPiN's 'talkers,' none of us liked it.

Re: Tigernet needs to pay attention to those tweets.

Sep 18, 2013, 12:51 PM [ in reply to Tigernet needs to pay attention to those tweets. ]

You have to admit it looks pretty bad when they start talking about teams having SEC speed and power when there aren't even two SEC teams playing. I have seen it before, and I am sure others have too. I realize they are trying to promote the product they have paid the most for, but that doesn't mean I don't get sick of hearing about it. I think they have managed to create a backlash around the country.

Its like Tebow. Sure he was great in college. He seems like a great guy. When he was in college I was sick of hearing about him every 5 minutes though.

military_donation.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I get sick of hearing it, but instead of blaming ESPN

Sep 18, 2013, 12:57 PM

I blame the rest of the country for not beating the SEC on the big stage or creating an atmosphere that is consistently comparable.

Clemson FSU and VT have good atmospheres, but the rest of our league is a joke in that regard. Plus we have not sniffed a BCS title, as a conference, in a long time. Big Ten has some good atmospheres, but fails on the big stage. Pac 12 has done the best job to counter the SEC with Stanford and Oregon, but ever since Miami and USC declined, the SEC has consistently produced the best teams.

ESPN, like all media, is following what they think is most compelling.

badge-donor-10yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I don't think there's a conspiracy

Sep 18, 2013, 1:10 PM

But I do think, just like in all media, there is a combination of the outlet reporting what is compelling (and thus getting viewership) and the outlet DRIVING public opinion based on the opinions of those doing the reporting.

There is little to no argument that the SEC is the best conference in college football over the last decade. To argue otherwise is to miss the point. However, when that fact is used by the outlet to raise the status of those in the SEC (deservedly or not) then it drives public opinion to the point beyond the reasonable difference in conference level.

So no, I don't think its a conspiracy, and I actually don't think its an intentional bias, but I do think that in reporting/covering the sport the talking heads of sports have created a dominance by the SEC well beyond reality.

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-20yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

But all its doing is making everyone but SEC fans sick of

Sep 18, 2013, 1:24 PM

the SEC. In fact, I believe the only real bias it creates outside the SEC is anti-SEC bias. I frequently hear/see people reaching for ridiculous arguments to the effect that the SEC isn't really better than anyone else.

Either way, there are many conspiracy theorists on this website who do directly suggest ESPN is in bed with the SEC.

badge-donor-10yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

TO be fair

Sep 18, 2013, 1:27 PM

They are in bed together. They have financial ties.

Now they also have financial ties to other conferences as well, but those are often more recent and less in depth.

However, as I said before, I don't think its anything but the normal progression of reporting being fed by public sentiment and then reinforcing and spreading that public sentiment.

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-20yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

ESPN will do just as well if another conference rises up.

Sep 18, 2013, 1:30 PM

ESPN can quickly and easily adjust contracts that funnel the most money from any conferences success to them. If the ACC somehow starts to rival the SEC, ESPN will be right there to collect.

It's not as if ESPN is instructing its commentators to pump up the SEC because it will better secure their wages remaining high. College football itself is the piggy bank for ESPN, not just the SEC. ESPN just believes, and I agree with them, that the SEC is currently the epicenter of college football.

badge-donor-10yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I'm not disagreeing with that

Sep 18, 2013, 1:34 PM

But in the game of perception, it is always good to note how perception is driven and reinforced by media on all sides.

But you are 100% right that the SEC is the best conference in college football over the last decade. Not arguing against that.

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-20yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

That is an interesting point... (way too long)

Sep 18, 2013, 1:46 PM

I agree that the media can drive opinion, and I believe that is a HUGE problem with actual news. (politics, foreign policy, etc.)

I just think its a different beast when talking about sports news. I think the big difference is that ESPN-watching sports fans have a higher degree of relevant knowledge about the topic (sports) compared to CNN-watching people's degree of knowledge about the world. Sadly enough there is a much higher level of cluelessness about what goes on in the world, and this leads to a different consequence for media sensationalism.

The SEC is being sensationalized because its the best conference with the most attention... yet most people are sick of it. But your average sports fan knows a decent amount of info about the topic, so they are more informed with their reaction to ESPN-SEC sensationalism. It's easier for sports fans to see when a lovefest is corrupting analysis.

However, when CNN sensationalizes a topic, most people know only tiny slivers of the relevant information, and so that sensationalism significantly alters or even creates perceptions on certain topics. People don't have a good amount of actual knowledge to create an independent perspective and so they totally rely on the news for their opinions.

Hopefully that made sense.

badge-donor-10yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Everything is cyclic

Sep 18, 2013, 2:05 PM

The SEC's time has peaked and is now on the decline in my opinion. Why? Because of all the kids who grow up NOT a fan of the SEC. When I was a kid I couldn't stand Notre Dame, Oklahoma, Nebraska, or Michigan (continues to this day) because that is all I ever heard about. How they were better than anyone else. Well the same is happening now. Do they have fans? Sure...but there are kids growing up out there who really don't like those schools because they are tired of hearing about them. Some of those kids are going to be athletes who will not go to an Alabama, SC, LSU, et al because they grew up hating them. Think it doesn't happen? How many kids in SC grow up having to pick sides? How many recruits do we lose each year because the kid grew up a SC fan and would never hear of going to Clemson. In the 70's it was Nebraska/Oklahoma, the 80's Miami/Penn State, the 90's Nebraska/FSU, and the 2000's came the SEC. This too shall pass.

military_donation.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

The problem with that is that CNN doesn't have a contract

Sep 19, 2013, 10:05 AM [ in reply to That is an interesting point... (way too long) ]

with the news makers they cover. The SEC pumping by ESPN began shortly after they signed the mega deal.

Shoot, even last week the story was about SEC speed on defense. HAHA. Those SEC defenses are giving up tons of points and yards. I'll never forget the Auburn/Miss St game where the final score was 3-2 and they were touting "SEC defense." Bullcrap...it was a crappy game.

ESPN can't be objective toward the SEC when they have this many of their game announcers as former SEC players and those players' coaches are still in the league.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

not all sec stadiums are "GREAT" atmospheres. therein

Sep 18, 2013, 3:51 PM [ in reply to I get sick of hearing it, but instead of blaming ESPN ]

lies the problem. espn would have you think they are. i present vandy, kentucky, and mizzou as examples right off the top of my head.

military_donation.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Vandy Mizzou and Kentucky are better than half the ACC

Sep 18, 2013, 5:19 PM

in terms of atmosphere. Compared to us? not even close, but dont forget who is in the ACC.

badge-donor-10yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I've been to games at Vandy and Kentucky

Sep 19, 2013, 9:59 AM

The only difference between Kentucky and Duke is that Kentucky has more fans in the stadium that don't give a rip about football. There is no atmosphere and the only talk is about horse racing or Kentucky basketball.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

In the Oregon/ UT game, when UT went up by 7...

Sep 18, 2013, 1:24 PM [ in reply to Re: Tigernet needs to pay attention to those tweets. ]

the narrative that they went to was something about how the Oregon OL was "stunned" by how good the big, bad DL from an SEC team was. Then Oregon somehow recovered and went out there and gained over 200 yards on the ground and over 400 yards through the air.

Oregon should be #1, and I think they'd beat Alabama by 14 right now.

2024 white level memberbadge-donor-10yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Texas A&M is much better than anyone Oregon has played.

Sep 18, 2013, 1:27 PM

I think Oregon could beat Alabama too, but I believe Bama should be number 1 at this point in the season.

I remember after week one ESPN had a story about the potential end of SEC dominance. So... that was a bit rash in the other direction.

badge-donor-10yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Herbstreit has long been the lone exception

Sep 18, 2013, 12:57 PM [ in reply to Tigernet needs to pay attention to those tweets. ]

It's not just the last few days. He does buy into the "SEC Speed" thing from time to time, but he's also the loudest (only) dissenter--and has been for a while--when it comes to ESPN proclaiming that the SEC is King Of Everything And Forever Untouchable.

The idea that TEAMS compete with CONFERENCES is proof in and of itself that there is SEC bias. We dont want to compete with the SEC, we are already better than 3/4ths of them. And equal or slightly below the rest.

We want to compete with Bama, Oregon, Ohio St, Oklahoma etc.

Sep 22, 2013, 10:08 AM

SEC is the best conference in America, please offer one better and find an analyst that would agree with you.

Absolutely no one has ever claimed that the bottom of the SEC is good, but until recently, the SEC has had a very impressive bowl and nonconference record. Also, frankly, when there are 5-6 SEC teams voted by coaches in the top 10, that indicates they think highly of the conference as well.

I could also argue that the quality of the coaches, players, and fanbases is better than any other conference. Also, until recently, the SEC did have far superior athletes than any other conference.

So, you can continue to claim conspiracy at ESPN, but please, flip the channel to another sports station, and they too, will be talking about the most entertaining conference in college football.
