I hope Saban doesn’t come for Wes.

He had 1 year left on his contract and I think he knew he was not going to be rehired.

Alabama was the 13th ranked defense in the country. They were 35th in rushing defense, but we were 13th. They were 17th on pass defense, but we were 77th.
We had a significantly better rush defense than Alabama, but obviously we had some issues in the secondary, otherwise...
Wes is not a bad DC. We need to better in the secondary. That's it.

Shore up the secondary, and we are a very solid defense.

Our secondary wasn't great under Venables but he covered it up by bringing pressure all the time so they didn't have to cover forever. Wes with his 3 down linemen didn't get the pressure needed to get the ball out of qbs hands faster.

I don't think that would've been a good idea with the secondary this year. They got burned quite a bit and had many missed assignments and tackles. They were too young and not deep enough to be on islands with WR's all game. Dropping the linebackers back into coverage wasn't a bad idea this year. We would've got burned alive with the screen game (we did early in the year) and short passes all year if we blitzed all the time. Think of the amount of TD's we would've allowed then.

the year before that.
Wes brings a lot of pressure. It sucked that Bresee had such a tough year, and Murphy loaded all year, and we mostly used a 4-man front

"Lost" is certainly a term for it. Alabama asked their DC to leave is probably more accurate.

100% correct. The fan base has wanted Golding gone for years. He's simply been getting less out of more for multiple years. They recruit the best and get a mediocre result. Little Nick has just been waiting for the right moment. Another NFL coach perhaps?

Interesting. The DC wanted the money and to leave Nick and work with Lane.

Rumors have it Saban is trying to get the UGA Co-DC Schumann. I guess Muschamp is not a fit.

I expect Schumann will bolt to Bama and Muschamp becomes DC. Probably doesn't matter. It's Kirby's defense.

Golding was hired by Saban as an assistant in 2017

from UTSA and promoted to DC in 2019. He struggled in 2019 (should Saban have fired him after one season as DC as Wes haters here want?) but helped them win the national championship in 2020. And most coordinators and assistants know Saban can be difficult to work with.
Their assistants and coordinators come and go just for the experience. It's a double-edged sword. They get some good ones but they also get a lot of turnover and less stability. But Nick is somehow able to make it work. Part of Clemson's success from last decade was loyalty and stability; it's worked for us. Knowing Riley may leave in a couple years, maybe Dabo is trying Nick's approach.
