The whole thing amazes me, so

Dec 13, 2022, 4:58 PM

you knew he was either transferring or going pro, and everyone with a set of eyes knew it wasn't the latter. Yet you put his feelings ahead of both the present and future of this football program. Had he sat DJU earlier, we'd be in the playoff this year, and be much better prepared at QB for the future with the experience that Cade would have gained.

The whole decision process on this is mind numbing!

No we wouldn't. We'd be b!tchin about Ohio State getting in over us instead of what you're b!tchin about.

If we beat the coots, we would be in, and with Cade competitive too!
Cade should have been playing more before ND, maybe we pull that one out too!

DJ is not relevant to the team for the Orange Bowl.
He graduates next week, and I wish him well as a Clemson Alumni!

Looking forward now!

Cuz you guys are full of ifs, buts, candy and nuts. The man makes more in a year than 10 of us in a life time to make these decisions. And all of the sudden people who have screamed his praises in the streets think dabo is stupid all of the sudden? You ignorant people wearing orange embarrass the #### out of me sometimes. And that's the honest truth. You guys miss West to really have something to ##### about, I swear.

Re: Ah the holidays

Dec 14, 2022, 9:09 AM

These endless haters of DJU are the same idiots who wanted Dabo to put in Taisun Phommachanh last year over DJU.

These idiots kept saying 'give TP a chance, he's got to be better than DJU.'

Here it is, more than a year later, and these same idiots have 'forgotten' their insane TP wishes and are back to complaining about Dabo and this year's 11 - 2 team.

Yes, the same Taisun Phommachanh who transferred to football powerhouse GA Tech, ended as 3rd string, and is back in the portal.

I never knew that Clemson had so many ignorant fans. Furious that DJU wasn't the next T.Lawrence or D.Watson, they assumed that Cade was ready from the start.

Not a doggone one of them paid attention to Dabo's assessments from Spring and Summer camp that Cade hadn't gotten his mind around the speed of the game.

This same Cade, when put in games earlier this season, had a predilection to roll to his right at the first whiff of pressure, and then run into an unblocked defender who he could then not outrun.

Cade looks good new (thank goodness), but he simply wasn't ready early in the season, and he proved that he still wasn't ready against Notre Dame.

I guess it's true that you can't teach a stump, as is proven with the DJU haters.

Honestly, DJ played his whole undergrad career at Clemson, so what are you complaining about. DJ could not play the way his 5 star status promised he would. Yes, fans have a right to be upset, we've come to expect excellence from Dabo and his recruiting and coaching teams, and when we expect filet mignon and get a hamburger, the suspension of disbelief is ruined. Your DJ will be fine, he'll land in a program closer to home.

My dissection of games where Cade could have come in?

Dec 13, 2022, 9:47 PM [ in reply to The whole thing amazes me, so ]

  • Wake Forest? NO. That game had so much volatility and the outcome so completely in the balance, Clemson was LUCKY that DJU had his best game in Winston-Salem.
  • Notre Dame? Everyone agrees that Cade was put in an abysmal situation that was completely NO WIN for Cade.
  • Coots? This is where we all recognize the Cade may have made a difference, but NO. However, this is a DANGEROUS rivalry game. The Coot players would be out to seriously injure this “freshman 5* celeb QB”. Coming in COLD TURKEY to save a rivalry game with NO SUBSTANTIVE EXPERIENCE built up throughout the season would have been the definition of INSANITY. I hate to say it, but as much as I despise losing what was built up for 8 years, I would not have put Cade in that situation.
  • ACCCFG? Yes, they clearly practiced Cade with the 1’s, and UNC was not a RIVALY game. He clearly won the QB job, and he was “READY”.

Clemson lost the CFP chances in South Bend, even if they had beaten the Coots.

Only if DJU had produced somewhere in the range of five (5) BLOWOUTS, where Cade could have come in at the 4th quarter and got substantial LIVE FIRE, could Cade have gotten the time he needed. DJU essentially did JUST ENOUGH (not deliberately, I believe) to get Clemson a WIN and keep Cade on the bench.

But, as we all know, all of the DJU games were watched on pins and needles.

Yeah, there may have been games during the 2016/2018 championship years where maybe the score was close at the end. However, with DW4 and TL16 at the helm (and with the WR talent on the roster), it never felt that we were “out of the game”. DJU had way too many situations where you felt that Clemson was “out of the game”, and the Notre Dame game was EXACTLY that feeling midway through the 1st quarter.

Gotta disagree. We had a VERY BAD loss to ND and a one loss Ocry0 St beat the same ND team and their only loss was to another playoff team. I doubt we would have gotten in unless we just trashed SC like 82-24 or something like that. Even that may not have been enough. I would not have liked it but I think that is how it would have worked out.

Re: My dissection of games where Cade could have come in?

Dec 14, 2022, 9:19 AM [ in reply to My dissection of games where Cade could have come in? ]

Complaining that DJU didn't lead the team to blow-out victories is no reason to bash him.

DJU played as much as needed to win; he played instead of Cade in those games because Cade wasn't ready yet to lead us to victory.

Clemson football is always about winning NOW.

Anyone who wants to burn a season in order to give the backups game experience, then they should switch their allegiances to Duke or Boston College.

Guess what happens to Clemson recruiting if we have a 6 - 6 season while getting Cade ready for 2023?

Here's what happens: Our recruiting classes go in the tank, and very soon thereafter so does Clemson football.

DJU was our best option to win in both 2021 and 2022; we were 10 - 3 in 2021 and (thus far) 12-2 this year with an ACC Championship.

We will have an excellent recruiting class which will pay its biggest dividends in 2024 thru 2026.

All of this is why Dabo gets credit for playing DJU as much as he did, instead of playing Cade prematurely.

    flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Can we just please pretend this dude never existed?***

    Dec 14, 2022, 9:23 AM

If Dabo played the not yet ready Cade K. instead of the better-at-the-time DJU, then Clemson would have lost some of this year's close games.

Recruiting for a 7 - 5 team will never be as good as recruiting for a 12 - 2 ACC Championship team. There is no ACC Championship opportunity if Cade was playing instead of DJU.

It's not just as easy as 'wait til next year' for Clemson ... the team down there in Columbia has patented that expression.

I tend to agree with you remember the Danny but Cade was put in an awful situation and set up to fail in the Notre Dame game. Even the play for him to roll out to the left and throw, for a right-handed qb that is difficult.

He/she doesn't listen to what most have said on here. Just jumps to conclusions that anyone that says something automatically is wrong. Most fans understood cade wasn't ready to take over. Maybe we go 13-0 with cade, maybe not. One cannot say what would have happened. Imo, most fans realize cade should have had and could have had more playing time before ND. Heck, he could have played more against ga tech. Certainly more against Furman and la tech. More in the bc game. That's most of the angst.

    Dec 13, 2022, 6:07 PM

I'll go ahead and retread turbulent waters, but largely agree this is now in the past and hypotheticals don't get us ahead of where we are.

Why couldn't he wait until January 2nd, if the portal is open until the 18th and he still wanted to participate with Clemson? If he lands somewhere before then I guess it makes sense. But if he doesnt, I don't see how missing all of the team resources and comradery does him any favors.

But on the flip side, I do understand the early signing date and getting enrolled for Spring are also constraints to be considered.

I don't know. Just seems like the 'system' needs some common sense that protects the interest of the players, but also gives them a chance to support their team through the whole season.

Anyways, the last thing I'll say on the matter is good luck DJ, and thank you for your time here.

It could have been handled better but let's move on

    Dec 13, 2022, 6:12 PM

1 DJ let everyone down last year coming in overconfident and very much out of shape. It was pathetic and I don't want to hear any more lame excuses for him.

2 THIS year, DJ came in humbled, in better shape and gave it all he had. It just wasn't good enough. That isn't his fault. When a player tries his best, you must respect that regardless of the results. You also can't blame DJ that Dabo stuck with him too long.

3 Dabo blundered the way he handled DJ and Cade this year. There is no argument anyone can make otherwise. Clemson should be the #3 or #4 seed preparing for UGA or Michigan. Dabo's coddling of DJ cost the other players on the team, the fans and CU itself a birth in the CFP. That said, Dabo is the best thing that ever happened to Clemson football and he isn't perfect. He's done enough for the program that we have to accept what has happened without anger.

Dec 14, 2022, 9:44 AM [ in reply to It could have been handled better but let's move on ]

#3 is wrong in part, but your conclusion is classy.

Dabo didn't blunder in the way that the DJU / Cade K. playing time was managed.

The objective was to win games; not risk losing games in hopes of both giving Cade playing time and winning the game.

I can accept the argument that Dabo blundered by not playing Cade in the second half of Q4 against BC. (There is the argument that Dabo wanted to blow out BC in order to get 'style points' for beating a very bad team by a big margin; the not-yet-ready Cade Klubnik was unlikely to pull off the big point margin win against BC, but he would have gotten much needed game experience.)

Cade got way too much credit for us beating Syracuse. Hunter Helms was more ready than Cade for that game; Syracuse was exhausted by 2nd half of that game and pretty much all we had to do was hand the ball off to Shipley and Mafah. Cade's 2 point conversion throw was beautiful, but didn't deserve 'great ability credit' from his lucky run on 3rd and forever (in which he got the benefit of the unnecessary roughness call on that powder puff tap when heading out of bounds). That lucky break saved us against Syracuse. After missing out on that 3rd and impossible chance to get us off the field, Syracuse was cooked meat.

If we had beating S.Carolina then indeed we would have made CFP. DJU played poorly, but we still would have won if we hadn't fumbled three times, and we still would have won if our DB on that 4th down play hadn't completely whiffed in pass coverage. S.Carolina's DB unit was in a different universe from the horrifically bad UNC DB unit; Cade's passing success was great against UNC's defense, but is unlikely that he would have been nearly as effective against S.Carolina's excellent DB group.
