Clemson doesn't care about basketball....as evidenced by Brown-L getting 14 years.

Thanks, thoroughly enjoyed that!

That's how I remember our defense that year.

I was at that game

Apr 24, 2021, 5:44 PM

It was a complete beatdown on WVA and Major Harris. The Ford Defense was great. They played with high motor and emotion, and the team was building up for a 2nd championship run.

Yep. I remember an analyst saying at some point during the

year that the only thing keeping Clemson from a national championship was a QB. I think that was Morocco that year, but he was a pretty good "youngster" and led the team well. That was a GREAT team.

It worked out nicely.

Also the Paws on the helmets were at 12 o'clock. Lol.

We were there! Levon Kirkland(and others) hit Major Harris so many times he was throwing up on the field.

That was fun!

Harris was a great athlete and good college QB, but he could have had a good nfl career if he had been open to switching positions. As a QB he was 3rd string in the CFL for a year or two, then a couple of good years in Arena.

Thanks for posting. I was there and enjoyed every minute of that game. Mrs. Harris was not a happy camper seeing her son being manhandled by a bunch of fired-up Tigers.

Ah the good ole days when...

Apr 24, 2021, 8:20 PM

men were men and football was football. Heck of a defense for our Tigers.

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

If that game was played today, half the defense ...

Apr 24, 2021, 9:14 PM

Would be ejected for targeting. It got me jacked up wishing some things never change. Those super-duper over-sized shoulder pads and neck braces were awesome. I wonder if the common shoulder surgery issues we seem to be having is because the pads have reduced in size so much?

That was an awesome game. It was my freshman year, I was home and went deer hunting that morning. Then got together with a bunch of buddies to watch the game. I remember all the talk being Major Harris and our DEF showed every one there should have been a different topic.

Thanks

Apr 24, 2021, 9:56 PM

The new targeting rules aside, this '89 defense would have destroyed both OSU and LSU in our last two CFP games. So many greats, but Levon Kirkland (an unrecruited 2 star out of high school...) was and is perhaps the greatest linebacker in Clemson history. And btw, we trounced FSU in Tallahassee to begin that season.

Go Tigers!!!

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

yup, had to go back

Apr 24, 2021, 10:01 PM [ in reply to If that game was played today, half the defense ... ]

we were part of the last group who wore those oversized hip pads. like the ones you could visibly see lol. during my junior year or so they allowed us to wear the "girdles" that had the pads built into them. made it waaaay easier to move around lol. also I don't recall seeing many neck braces. I saw a few but I think they were going out of style around the same time as well. I played in the early 2000's so a lot of the players wanted to look cool while playing and the big bulky pads didn't give them much "swagger" if you will.

Thanks for that thrill. Those Danny Ford defenses were incredible. What a great Clemson coach he was!
