The paranoia is worse than the disease

Mar 9, 2020, 7:17 PM

One of these things is true:

1) Society is drastically over-reacting to what is essentially a new flu.

2) This is a lot more than a new type of influenza virus.

This week should answer the question.

Who is paranoid in your mind, if you really meant that.
Is it Clemson for reporting a possible case?
Is it the media for telling what's happening around our state, nation or the world?
Is it the stats reported by everybody that reflects a growing international disease that still can be a pandemic, but may be held in check by smart precautions?
Is it our Federal Government taking proactive steps even amidst criticism those steps are not enough?
My hope is we all get over the criticism and come together to universally address a disease that is a very real and present danger.
This is NOT the flu. Its shorts history suggests it's just as virolent and much more deadly to some older and immune deficient people. And if if it's not checked soon, what is the outcome? Potentially tens of millions infected and potentially millions dead.

Paranoia? Nope. To me it's just common sense until our world gets a handle on this terrible disease. Lol&p

Exactly. This is getting blown way out of proportion.

It’s obviously something to be careful about, and a good reminder to practice good hygiene. But the frenzy over this is crazy.

Imagine if every case of the flu, and every death due to the flu, was broadcasted in real time? People would really lose their minds (even more than they are now).

As more people are tested, the mortality rate will go down. I do think this is a more aggressive virus than the flu, but it will be contained. It isn’t going to wipe out humanity.

Paranoia doesn't kill thousands of people. Let's hope this stops in the thousands. It all depends on the actions that people, officials, and governments take, so efforts to inform people are absolutely reasonable.

For those who want to compare this to the flu:
1) The probability of death from COVID-19 infection is 10x as high.
2) The R0 of COVID-19 is twice as high as flu.
3) There is no vaccine, and there will not be one this year.

If for some reason anyone is really fixated on the flu and wants a comparison, read up on the 1918 flu. The argument that the flu kills more people each year is stupid. COVID-19 is just getting started. On the positive side, this means that we have time to act! So, let's stop bashing honest reports from Clemson, the CDC, or WHO. Be watchful, prepare, and say your prayers. I hope this does turn out ok, but we can't just ignore the fact that this has killed people and is spreading rapidly.

1. The testing rate of coronavirus is a lot less than that of flu, simply due to supply. THe US only has 150,000 tests available. We probably tested that many flu cases last week. At our office, after screening, we will still likely only send for testing those at risk of death, due to test availability. If you are only testing the highest risk population, your death rate is going to be higher.
2. the death rate may be higher, but I don't think it is a virulent as flu. If you look at SARS from 2000ish, it was much more deadly than coronavirus, around 10%, but because of its deadliness, it limited is own spread. This is probably also why there is more flu but less death rate. that said...
3. even if flu has 1/10th the death rate, it affects many more times the people. The annual flu deaths are between 200,000 and 600,000 world wide. In the US this year, at LEAST 20,000 flu deaths, to 22 US coronavirus deaths, or about 4000 WORLDWIDE deaths.

comparing to a flu pandemic from 100 years ago probably isn't the fairest comparison, given the advances in hygiene.

I think if nothing else, this coronavirus outbreak should remind people how we should be treating flu every year. instead of sending kids to school or going back to work as soon as fever has broken, while still shedding virus, and thus spreading further, people should treat it more like COVID19 and stay home, wash hands, avoid everyone, etc.

1) Agreed - the testing rate is too low. In addition, some cases are mild, so many infected people aren't getting tested. This only contributes to the spread. Still, all indications point to the probability of death being higher for this than flu.

2) FALSE - COVID-19 is much more virulent. Look at the R0 estimates.

3) You're missing the point. The spread of COVID-19 is really JUST GETTING STARTED. WE DO NOT KNOW WHAT THE DEATH COUNT WILL BE! My HOPE is that people will be informed and heed advice from the CDC and WHO, and that administrators will act quickly enough to appropriately close things, instead of stupidly imposing the same inconveniences after it is too late. The, maybe we will be fortunate and achieve a lower death rate than flu. Also, again, with the flu, there are vaccinations, so closures or social distancing are not as critical.

Really ANY comparisons to the flu are misleading. Maybe SARS is reasonable, and there's a nice article in the Lancet on that.

Hopefully you see why I argue that so-called "paranoia" is not worse than a rapidly spreading virus that has killed people.

My brother is a Dean at a major state university in another part of the country and they are determining if they will close the campus and go to all on-line classes after Spring Break next week. It will be interesting to see if the NCAA will cancel the basketball tournaments.

My son is coming home early for spring break on Thursday of this week. Princeton University sent out an email to parents and students on Monday that once students leave campus for their respective homes to not return until at least April 5th with that date up in the air as well. All classes will be online/virtual to reduce and minimize risk to students, staff, etc. All the Ivy League schools are starting to implement these protocols. I would not be surprised that other schools follow maybe even Clemson. I did hear OSU just closed its campus today.

Princeton and several other colleges and universities are going to only online classes after spring break. Princeton has had one case confirmed so far.

this is a scary situation (not that the virus is that scary)

Mar 10, 2020, 7:40 AM

It's not. I have listened to experts and basically, it falls somewhere between the flu and cold in severity, but the problem is we don't have natural immunity built up and there is no vaccine. So yes, this thing may get worse before it gets better and likely will come back stronger in the fall.

But that's not what scares me. It's all the business shutting down. I was on a business call yesterday and people all around and planning for telework and to try to continue business without face-to-face meetings.

Could have a huge impact on businesses.

My office had a similar update yesterday. Since our main office is based out of NYC and we're in Atlanta, we do what they do and apparently the city strongly suggested people stay home/avoid the subway. I personally only need to be in office if I need to do testing/prototyping, otherwise I can stay home anyway.
