Evening Wrap: Swinney talks missing players, roster and expectations

Fresh off the golf course and a meal on the veranda of the clubhouse at The Reserve at Lake Keowee, Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney sat down for almost an hour with the local media and covered a variety of topics concerning the 2015 season. Those topics concerned the health of Deshaun Watson and the status of players like Ammon Lakip, Jay Guillermo, Jay Jay McCullough and others.

Best Is The Standard

Not a lot of talk about oline

Hope we can find 5 guys to count on.

I don't think the staff is as worried about them as we are

I've heard that all 4 of the freshmen that came in are considered "hits" as are Taylor Hearn and Justin F. from last year's class. They have the pieces and having Watson back there helps alleviate some of the OL problems.

Liking Dabo's blunt talk regarding the players' commitments.

Jul 16, 2015, 9:21 AM

It seemed in years' past, that was Chad's role, at least on the offensive side, and that Dabo was the positive, pick em up guy. Not anymore. His comments about Hopper, JJ and Lakip are very honest and telling. I like it and hope the players respond.

Isn't that Interesting about G Hop?

Jul 16, 2015, 10:22 AM

So the assessment is that he is as talented as Artavis, but yet he hasn't sold out to being great, work ethic, whatever. G HOP don't man up, he will find himself 3rd string with Cain and McCloud breathing down his neck.

He actually said Hopper is more talented***

the way I see it

Jul 16, 2015, 11:14 AM

Hopper has tons of natural talent, but he's not a football player - he's a 7on7 player, always looking for the flashy juke as opposed to taking positive yards. Artavis, on the other hand, is a true football player with the strength and determination to put his shoulder down and fight for those extra few yards like we saw in the UNC game. That's shown up in games and on the practice field, and it's why Scott has passed G-Hop with less speed and agility.

Scott is considerably thicker than Hopper, so there's

Jul 16, 2015, 12:03 PM

a good reason for the fact that Scott is more willing to put his shoulder down. Hopper has always been very talented, and highly explosive; he's just smaller-framed and is a little different type player than Scott, but the main thing that's held him back I think is between his ears.

Agree totally. Nuk did not have a big frame either, but

Jul 16, 2015, 12:42 PM

did not have a problem laying a shoulder down into a DB's chest for an extra yard

Clemson Football, the glory days are here!

Hopkins was about 30 lbs heavier than Hopper.

Jul 16, 2015, 2:48 PM

I wouldn't really think Hopper to be very successful lowering his shoulder to pick up tough yards. He's just not that type of player. Scott and Hopkins, both considerably bigger, are much more suited for that.
