If some coot got busted for cocaine and a DUI

Jun 25, 2015, 8:39 AM

we would be relentlessly ripping them. If we're going to accept this kind of behavior (suspension or whatever) we can never make fun of George Rogers, or any other drugged up coot, again.

Lakip, you embarrassed the hell out of Clemson.

I am pretty sure Dabo isnt going to let this slide. If he isnt kicked off the team in the end, it will really surprise me.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I agree. It's amazing seeing Clemson fans justify this guys

I'm not seeing a whole lot of excusing what Lakip did

Jun 25, 2015, 8:48 AM

it looks more like discussion what the appropriate punishment should be. It seems that the consensus is somewhere between 4 games and gone for good.

There's a dig difference between 4 games-permanent and 5th strike and "suspended" for spring practice.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

The excusing is in the punishment suggestions.

Jun 25, 2015, 8:52 AM

Some folks are suggesting a two game suspension. He should be removed from the team.

Under what precedent?

Jun 25, 2015, 8:58 AM

Sammy had a misdemeanor drug possession and he got 4 games and worked his way down to 2. Is the difference weed vs. cocaine?

I can't remember a DUI from Clemson in a long time, but I can't think of another first offense DUI at any other school that was an automatic dismissal.

I honestly could go either way on it. About the only thing I know if feel with certainty is that 2 games is too few. I think this one could be a tough choice for Dabo, but I also don't know if there have been any other team related issues with Lakip.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

You're excusing his actions.

Jun 25, 2015, 9:09 AM

Sammy's incident and this incident do not really compare IMO. Sure we can tally up the fact they are misdeamors and first offenses as well but that's in the eyes of the state.

The eyes of Clemson are a completely different ordeal. He's tarnished our reputation. We have coots saying Clemson is on the same level as their program (see classof09 below). Cocaine is the hard stuff. Not a typical college drug. Driving drunk kills people all the time. Thank god he didn't.

I'm sure Lakip will go through some kind of PTI and in a year his record will be clean. But what about the national opinion of Clemson?

2024 white level memberbadge-donor-10yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

There's something in these hills.

I'n not excusing it but I don't see why don't they compare?

Jun 25, 2015, 9:50 AM

I don't much care the type of drug as long as it is an amount limited to "personal consumption." Both are basically viewed the same in the eyes of the law because they adjust for the amount that triggers misdemeanor vs felony because of potency. Cocaine is viewed as a "rich man's drug" and weed is the "average man's." Sammy's arrest was plastered all over ESPN for months because he's a superstar and missed a marquee game that was covered nationally. Lakip is an average kicker that nobody knows. It was a scroll on the ESPN ticker for about 2 hours. Sammy was much more of a hit to Clemson's reputation from a coverage standpoint. The way Sammy and Dabo handled it ultimately ended up being a credit to Clemson. We'll see about Lakip. So if you are going to base Lakip's punishment on the impact it has to Clemson's reputation, then it has to be Sammy's or less.

The DUI is a huge deal to me. Thats much bigger than the drug possession in my eyes. I just don't know the appropriate punishment because lucky for us, Clemson hasn't had an athlete get busted for DUI in a long time. We really don't have a precedent. Find me some other school that has kicked off a player for a 1st offense DUI and I'll flip to your side.

Dabo's built up some credibility in meting out punishment. So as long as its legit, I think he'll get the benefit of the doubt.

(For the record, I don't care if he goes through PTI and/or beats 1 or both of the charges. That's just a technicality. He can and should be suspended for conduct detrimental or just being freakin' stupid.)

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: I'n not excusing it but I don't see why don't they compare?

Jun 25, 2015, 10:26 PM

Is it his first offense? I have heard rumor from friends in the L.E. world that he was arrested in Franklin County Ga. a couple years ago for possession of Marijuanna.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Jun 25, 2015, 9:44 PM [ in reply to You're excusing his actions. ]

Tigerdrummer you lost your arguement right here. You are doing what you state others are doing and that is you are excusing what Sammy did.Why do you suppose you are condemning the improved PK Lakip for his extremely poor judgement, but not the superstar WR that is Sammy? Both of them, as well as some other past players have embarrased Clemson at one time or another.
Face it you and I nor anyone else on this board has the right to pass judgement of what Dabo should or shouldn't do to a student athlete. That is a fact not an opinion!

We can't portray an image of Clemson being a city on a hill and then allow this behavior with a 2-4 game suspension. It doesn't work like that.

Why can't we all just admit USC and Clemson are major sports programs. Neither of them have a moral high ground.

For one, our coach doesn't appear on TV drunk. Our assistant coaches don't get into fist fights on the sidelines or #### in the street. Your coach leans on the phrase "boys will be boys" while ours turns boys into men.

Word has it Garcia just got suspended again. What's that? The 63rd time?

Welp, MY TURN. Here's what I got.....

Jun 25, 2015, 6:55 PM

****KEEP IN MIND THIS IS ONLY SINCE DARTH VISOR HAS BEEN HERE****

March 1st, 2015- A classic way to start off a month as Victor Hampton was jailed for DWI, speeding, wreckless driving and open container. In fairness, he was only doing 100 in a 55 zone... Investigators said two other men were passengers in Hampton’s vehicle and attempted to hide their weapons under the front passenger seat before the trooper approached them.

February 13th 2015- Shameik Blackshear arrested for petit larceny.

September 8th- Former #### arrested for inappropriately touching teenage girls. Harold Green II was jailed and released but his lawyer claims he's no danger to the community. Really, tell that to one of the girls who is now in counseling over the incident.

March 30th 2014- Former #### Chris Culliver arrested after running over a pedestrian and leaving the scene. He returned to the scene later and threatened witnesses with brass knuckles.

August 16, 2014- Former fullback James Hutton arrested after an assault that fractured a man's skull. Hutton faces a charge of second-degree assault and battery by a mob, which is punishable for 3 to 25 years.

May 23, 2014- OT Na'Ty Rodgers arrested for disorderly conduct and consumption.

December 9, 2013- Jadeveon Clowney cited in 5 points.

June 22, 2012- Former scar player Kenny Davis arrested for criminal sexual conduct.

July 31,2012- Tanner McEvoy arrested.

May 31, 2012- 21 year old Kenny Davis arrested and charged with third degree criminal sexual conduct. According to the department, the victim claims Davis had sexual intercourse with her without her consent after leaving Five Points in Columbia on May 31.

March 20, 2012- Former gamecock Jarriel King released from Seahawks after his arrest for sexually assaulting a woman.

March 16, 2012 Ethan Carter arrested.

February 27, 2012- Tanner Lovick arrested.

Feb 27, 2012 - South Carolina middle linebacker Angelo Watley was arrested on Sunday on three charges and is currently being detained at Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center. Per University policy, Watley has been suspended from all football-related activities. Watley was charged with Grand Larceny of good that value more than $2,000 but less than $10,000. He was also charged with Financial Transaction Card Theft and Violent Burglary in the second degree. He is currently being held on $50,000 bond by the city.

1/13/12 - Byron Jerideau, 22, was arrested and charged with Traffic / Pedestrian on controlled access highway and Disorderly / Public disorderly conduct.

7/26/2011- G.A. Mangus was arrested early Tuesday morning in Greenville and charged with nuisance conduct. At 1:31 a.m. Tuesday, two Greenville police officers in an unmarked patrol car "observed Mangus facing Main St. urinating on the street curb and roadway," according to a report from the Greenville police department. When an officer who was called to the scene by those two officers approached Mangus, the coach was "unsteady on his feet and he had a strong odor of alcoholic beverage coming from his person," the report stated. When questioned by the officer, Mangus speech was slurred and he was "uncooperative in providing straight answers," the report stated.

7/14/11 - Linebacker Edward Muldrow was arrested on a charge of public drunkenness, underage drinking, possession of alcohol by a minor, and littering. An arrest warrant states that back on July 14, a Columbia police officer saw Muldrow with a bottle of beer in Columbia's Five Points. The report says the officer asked Muldrow to stop and to come toward him, and that Muldrow threw the bottle in the bushes. he report says Muldrow cooperated and gave his name. According to the incident report, the officer smelled alcohol on Muldrow and said the player "had reddened eyes and slurred speech. Muldrow was then taken to the Richland County Detention Center. .University policy says players are automatically suspended after an arrest. "Incoming freshman linebacker Muldrow, from Atlanta, will be suspended from the team, pending a legal review. Sammy's car was pulled over because he scraped his car

Jun 25, 2015, 10:03 AM

against a curb. When the officer opened the car, there was a strong scent of marijuana in the car. There's no reason to be naive. Even though he wasn't charged with it, Sammy was likely stoned while driving. The fact that he couldn't drive well enough to keep his car on the road on a part of campus with some very wide roads should tell you that he too was impaired beyond a reasonable driving state. The only reason he probably wasn't charged with DWI was because it's much more difficult to measure blood THC level than it is blood alcohol level.

Both players made extremely poor choices in driving while impaired. I honestly don't see how you can be okay with giving Sammy a 2-game suspension, while saying Lakip deserves to be immediately dismissed from the program. Sure cocaine is worse health-wise, but is that your only basis for saying Lakip deserves to be booted? The SC laws categorize cocaine and marijuana possession in the same way. The Clemson Student-Athlete Handbook treats positive tests for marijuana and cocaine in the same way.

Sammy's original punishment was slated to be 2-4 games based on how he acted the rest of the summer. Sammy got lucky that he wasn't charged with DWI, but I personally don't have a problem with Dabo giving Lakip 4 games if this is his first issue, and he does the right things. Honestly, the football part of this is minimal to me. The more important part is getting the player into the drug-treatment program and getting this problem fixed before it becomes full-on addiction. If Lakip can prove to Dabo he's learned from his mistake and Dabo trusts that Lakip is never going to do something like this again, I don't see why anyone would have a problem with Lakip kicking again after seeing a 4-game punishment.

Jun 26, 2015, 11:12 AM [ in reply to Sammy's car was pulled over because he scraped his car ]

Dabo knows these young men a lot better than we do and I totally trust him to do the right thing. Over the course of knowing them, I suppose they either build up "credits" or incur "debits". When two players do the same exact thing, I don't expect the one who has built up a lot of "debits" to necessarily get the same treatment than another who has built up a lot of credits. It is like someone in an office or on a construction crew that is habitually late for work who eventually gets fired for it, versus someone who was late once a year, whom you certainly wouldn't fire for being late. I think we will know from Dabo's actions whether Lakip has built up credits or debits!
