Thinking about giving up IPTAY/Tickets...
Feb 3, 2022, 11:03 AM
|
|
Been going to games since middle school in 1984. Thought about it last night, probably 250+ home and away. Went to every home game from Charleston for 15 years, and now back in Atlanta we only did a few last year. Daughter off to college and son with Saturday football games, so not looking good this year either.
Anyone else wrestling with this?

Not wrestlING, but did wrestle with it

for about a year or three.
Season tiggets for 10+ years, kids/life got busy. Started realizing was not maximizing my spend....unused tickets, kids leaving after first quarter, etc.
Scrapped season tickets and started just picking out games I wanted to go to. Ended up with way better seats AND saved money.
Win, win.

It's why I never bothered ordering season tickets

I donate small amount every year to maintain ITPAY and "build status" and somewhat support the program but I realized a long time ago that even if I cut a massive check to IPTAY I likely would get seats I wasn't very happy with since the renewal rate is like 99% in the lower deck.
IMO it's much more cost beneficial to pay up on the secondary market for lower level seats for the 1-2 games I go to a year instead of giving thousands to IPTAY to sit in the upper deck like a poor and/or constantly be trying to eat tickets.
Have to think this new IRS reporting rule is going to make this an even bigger headache because the season ticket holders scalping tickets on Stubhub have to deal with tax paperwork now

We pulled the plug just a few years ago for a few reasons:
-My dad isn't really able to go anymore because of the physical strain, and he was the #1 reason I wanted to be at every game. He dropped his really good seats about the same time we cut the cord. -Money. We can afford it, but we also can use that money for other things. And we can't cough up the big money to get the really good seats we like. If we choose to go to a game, getting nice seats off StubHub isn't hard. And since we can't make every game, it seems like a waste of money. -Travel. When we lived in Greenville, that's an easy day trip. Now, we have to fight all the BS on I-26 coming from Charleston, especially if the Dirt Peckers have a home game. Took us five hours one time just to get to Greenville. Then we have to fight it coming back Sunday. And then the weekend is gone. -Spoiled. Winning the Natty spoiled us so we don't feel the urgency as much anymore. -Comfort. It sure is nice to watch all that football in the garage with neighbors and then just plop in my own bed when the night is done.
I used to be militant about going to every home game, but now it's just something I like to do a couple of times a year. I like to see some friends I don't get to see too often.
Maybe that makes me a bad fan, but I'm pretty loud and obnoxious about Clemson in my hood, so I feel like I'm making up for it.

I made it up once or twice in '19, and none in '20 or '21.

I miss being around Clemson and seeing it, but other than that..I don't miss the $1500-$1800 weekends. That and 8+ hrs of driving.
Getting a hotel was the biggest expense, then food, drinks, and tickets..It's a big weekend. Do 2 or 3 of those a year and I'm looking at a Bahamas trip for a week.
Before I moved up there I could tell it was sliding this way...and it has. Living there would have been easy, but when you are 4+hours away, it changes the dynamic.

We have in-laws to stay with in Greenville, so that helps. But yeah, I haven't been to a game since 2019. I wanted to do one this year but the wife was still too wary over COVID.
But you're in the same boat I'm in. The travel is a #####. And those neighborhood college football days have become really fun at a fraction of the cost.

I got into a fight decades ago with Iptay over parking.
Feb 3, 2022, 11:35 AM
|

I think it was parking..I dunno, its been a while, and I never gave them any money after that.
At this point, unless I hit the lottery and make them the beneficiaries, giving them a penny just doesn't make any sense; my tickets will be upper deck, and I'm not going to sit there. And like FatherG said, with the tax credit no longer in play, it makes it even more of a "why?" to get up to 1-2 games every couple years.
If I go up for any more, I'll buy tickets for that game and pay for parking somewhere as close as I can. Traveling will be even worse in a few weeks after I move, so it could be questionable when/if I go to another game.

And now I'm in this boat, too. I don't wanna go sweat my hairy balls off to watch us kick Furman's teeth in during a noon game in early August. But I also know the crowds and traffic I gotta fight if it's a big game in the fall.
Get off my lawn.
I'll still get up there to watch us kick chickens around, though, regardless of the situation.

I just cannot justify the cost - 4 tickets in UT - one row from the top, so nice they are under the upper deck - but all the way to the west end of the field. To keep them it is $350 per for seat equity and then tickets, so about $700 per seat? add seatbacks and about $800 per.
I am out this year I think.

What happens with all this pricing if we ever--Lawd forbid--slip back into mediocrity. I mean, college football is cyclical and it doesn't take much to have a great program come crashing down.
Are people gonna pony up all this money then?

Add to the cost, 'hey, do you want some good parking? - that'll be another couple of grand' - I had two spots in front of Sirrine at one time, loved parking there, but to keep them it was about $3,500 in IPTAY iirc. I gave them up but kept my tickets at the lowest IPTAY level I could - got me one parking space in lot 22. LOL.

Things I've heard about parking at Clemson games...
Feb 3, 2022, 11:29 AM

1. Greasing the palms of some parking lot attendants can produce a lot upgrade.
2. Having some really awesome Photoshop skills can solve some problems, too.
But, um, that's just what I've heard.

the "little guy" (like probably 90% of us on the board) is going to get squeezed out for all the reasons you mentioned above. At that point Clemson will have to decide what direction they want to go I guess.

to really open it up, so many people with good lower level seats are loathe to give up their tickets because of the sunk cost they incurred with with number of years donating + money donated over the years to get those seats

Gave up four seats back in 2008 lower south, kept the last two in the West Endzone (last row) and under the overhang. Easy in and easy out and stayed pretty dry in bad weather.
But West Endzone construction eliminated those this coming year and IPTAY is treating me like a new ticket request for those two seats. So not gonna go to upper deck after donating what I've sent over there for the 20+ years.
Will just tailgate with remaining friends when I feel like going and grab a ticket on the open market.
Money talks over there now. I'm too fond of mine.

years.
I did not go to a game in from 2019-2021 and I have missed it. APM gunnuh be there next season. Believe that.
OTOH, the games are not like they used to be. Paying for parking, the changes at Clemson, etc. do not make it the game day experience I remember and cherish.
Don't get me wrong - I love going, seeing old friends, etc., but the scene outside the games has morphed into something not quite as pleasant as it used to be.
If I lived nearby, I doubt seriously I would have season tickets.

Cheaper to just pay for a church spot downtown and pregame inside the bars then what the secondary market cost is on parking passes.
That has become by far the biggest benefit of being a season ticket holder

We gave up our seats in UM (LDR) after the 2007 season.
Feb 3, 2022, 12:35 PM

At the time we lived in Richmond and it was just too big of a commitment especially with 12 and 4 yo girls. We had those seats since 1978.
Now that we live on Hartwell we just pick a game or 2, fight parking and forego the huge tailgate spread. That or have a huge tailgate spread at the house.

Since IPTAY allows you to keep your seats, no one ever gives them up
Best bet is to buy season tickets off someone on secondary market if you're trying to buy your way in

this year. I keep the contribution just to stay active.
Financially, it just doesn't make sense. I live four hours away and have a young kid. If I'm lucky, I can make two home games a year.
If I could swing a weekend in town for a reasonable price, I'd be more willing to do it but hotel costs are prohibitive.

Buying season tix pushed me into attending more games
Feb 3, 2022, 12:08 PM
|
|
While cheaper to pick and choose individual games, I found myself coming up with reasons to not attend games each week. With season tix, I push a lot harder to go to games and feel happier after every visit.
Money and time is clearly the winner if picking individual games. My happiness each week is clear winner with season tix.

I enjoy going to games, have for my whole life. But I’m not driving 5 hours, spending thousands of dollars, taking a whole weekend, and dealing w my 5 and 2 year olds wanting to leave early just so my wife can get a picture for Instagram. I’d rather watch the game at my house and spend the day going on the water or smoking meats. Maybe when the kids are older or life moves us closer.

I want to get my own seats or see if I can buy the seats from the same fella I did last year. Being super poor through the 2000s then house poor for a while while made me miss a lot. Now that I'm close I don't want to miss anything. I've even been known to go tailgate then watch at the bar. This is all really unhelpful to you.
