After watching the Michigan beatdown of Ohio State, is it

Nov 28, 2021, 11:41 AM

possible that the BIG 10 is overrated, and their victories over each other all season long have kept them artificially ranked, and none of them are are good as their rankings would have us believe? I mean, based on the polls, and all of the talk by broadcasters and pundits recently, I was starting to believe that Ohio State was, despite an ealy season fluke loss to a good Oregon team, becoming an unstoppable powerhouse of superior talent. Yet, that illusion was shattered, and with it, to me atleast, the whole idea that they were all that good to start with, which could mean that all of the teams they beat along the way weren't as good as billed after all. The BIG 10 is certainly in a position to benefit from favorable treatment from sports media.

Just like the SEC

The sports media would have us believe that the SEC is composed of a bunch of Alabamas and Georgias, but that's not the case. Same for the B1G. Most years, both of those conferences have one (or maybe two) dominant teams, then a bunch of also-rans.

It would really have helped if NC State didn't #### the bed against MS St.

Yes it is…

This whole thing with Michigan is a complete facade. If they make it past Iowa, they will get absolutely steamed rolled in the CFP…

Can’t the same be said about every conference…

I mean the media would have us believe that the SEC is a mighty juggernaut, but maybe they’re just a bunch of mediocre teams beating up on each other. You see the same conference match ups year after year and you never truly see how good these teams are or aren’t.

I don't think it's the same for those outside of the SEC and

BIG10. Some rankings still have Minnesota, with 4 losses, including to Illinois and Bowling Green, ahead of us, for example.

BIG 10 = Best conference top to bottom

…. by far.

Agree 100% with all.

It's far more hype than reality. From an ACC perspective; yes top to bottom the league wasn't as good this year! But, when ACC foes beat each other and those opponents aren't ranked or close losses to unranked ACC teams - "perception wins the day"!
The perception that because somebody but a number before that university's football teams name - the loss or close win "means more"! Not!
If you go there - Pitt and Nancy St and Georgia are all ranked opponents! Why did it take so long for CU to get back in the rankings? An SEC or Big 10 team would have been back far sooner! Yet, Northwestern can lose OOC games to Who? Some of your SEC squads can lose to G5 schools and it's not a knock?

All that to say: "it's all perception and I could not agree more with what you are getting at"!

This is going to happen when a sport is shaped by bias, perception, and conjecture. Rather than advocating for the scheduling of more Power 5 inter-conference matchups throughout the season, sports media would rather hype certain teams for ratings/page-clicks, guess who might win in a head-to-head, and advocate for playoff expansion.

Sometimes the road to the truth is so elusive it's confusing and reality becomes illusion.

Agree, just more evidence for a need for a total conference

realignments based around a real playoff system just like in all other college sports.
