After some research on grills....

Jul 21, 2021, 1:29 PM

Going Traegar.
Will allow me to smoke and grill. Easy to clean.

Anyone have one?

"Had"

Jul 21, 2021, 1:33 PM

it was a workhorse for over 10 years for me. Still going strong as I passed it on.

I tweaked mine over time, putting a gasket on the lid to get a better seal, adding smoke tubes at times to get a little more smoke, etc. Nothing that really needed to be done, I like to mod things.

You will love it.

Meant to add - I moved up a level to a Mak, so I am still a pellet guy.

Pro tip - Costco sells their premium pellets and ships free.

Could you consistently get 500+ deg for steaks and such?

That’s my biggest reservation.

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-10yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I can get way over that on my Mak

my old Traeger topped out about 350-375, but it was a well used old machine.

What’s your review of your MAK?

Jul 21, 2021, 4:13 PM

Did you get the 2 star?

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-10yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Yes.

Jul 21, 2021, 4:15 PM

My review is I love it, but it cost too much.

But I love it.

Friend of mine has a Rectec and loves it.

I understand the appeal, but they're not for me. Also I don't think he uses the grill feature very often on account of it not being particularly good.

I have a Pit Boss and love it, and cheaper than Traeger.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

dumb question most likely, but are the pellet smoker

Jul 21, 2021, 2:04 PM

grills like the traeger, etc good for just throwing a couple burgers on the grill for dinner? I would like a new grill but I mostly am just cooking dinner like grilled chicken or burgers, no smoking boston butts & ribs, I'm on the go too much for that.

You're in griddle territory there***

Yeah, that was my thought too. Blackstone or bust

Jul 21, 2021, 2:10 PM

I guess.

You won't regret it. I cooked mahi, rice, and asparagus last

Jul 21, 2021, 2:14 PM

night on mine. Quick and easy with minimal clean up. And I got to sit outside in silence for 10-15 minutes. Amazing utility.

Please forgive me, @IneligibleUser

Unless you like smoking, I'd stick to a regular grill

Jul 21, 2021, 2:07 PM [ in reply to dumb question most likely, but are the pellet smoker ]

you can convert almost any grill to be a "smoker". I'd just go with the one you want

If you don't ever plan on smoking anything I'd just get a regular grill. Pellet grills can do it all but they thrive low and slow.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

True, their game has been low and slow

Jul 21, 2021, 4:09 PM

but some newer units have open flame options and get hot as ####.

b/c its indirect heats

Jul 21, 2021, 2:11 PM [ in reply to dumb question most likely, but are the pellet smoker ]

there are no direct flames. But it seems pretty easy to cook burgers and steaks. You set the temp so straight forward.

I'm gonna use it for both grilling and smoking. Will grill more of course but would love to smoke some ribs and pork butt

Yes

Jul 21, 2021, 2:18 PM [ in reply to dumb question most likely, but are the pellet smoker ]

If you get the brand I have, which is a Pit Boss. I can't comment on the others. But it allows you to slide a grate to either smoke or do open flame direct grilling.

get it up to temp, but you prob do that on a gas grill also.

The nice thing about a pellet is turn it on, set the temp and you are done. Easy peasy.
