After reading 76er's super daily reports of Frank Howard's year to

Jul 11, 2022, 10:06 AM

year win/loss records (written within O.J.'s daily posts)..it's a wonder why ole Frank was kept on as HC for so long!

Hey..I watched, interviewed & met the Coach several times from 1959-1989 and drove 250 miles to attend his funeral on a dreary cold Super Bowl Sunday to show my respects & to honor his legacy at Clemson.

Yes..he helped plan, build & maintain Memorial Stadium..was at 1st meeting of and then personally helped get IPTAY rolling among the masses by driving his car thru out the state in the hot Summers w/o AC to beg for $10 a year (or a chicken or corn)..used his wit & humor to get national coverage..talked us into couple major bowls when we probably didn't deserve it (Ranked only about #11/12 vs #1 LSU in Jan1959 Sugar Bowl)..loved his Teams..was a tireless worker & communicator..was loyal..knew how to work the state's Usc politicians to get road Hwy 123 built from G'ville to hidden Clemson..stayed in Tigertown his entire adult life and was buried up above the Stadium so to watch his Boys play & win.

Guess I answered my question!

Thx Coach for you did a lot with what you had and even many of those losses were close and tough battles.

Note: It was know among opposing coaches that playing against stout Clemson lines, even with a win, would drain your team so badly that a loss the next week could occur, and often did~

GO TiGERS..ROCK the HiLL!

He was a legend in a time when there were few in the game.

Back in the day folks were much more patient than today. Especially when it involved a legend like Howard.

Didn't hurt that he was the AD. I forget which year it was, '66 or '67, he was hung in effigy by some students. Never forget "three yards and a cloud of dust."

No it wasn't 66/67. I was a student them and we had good teams those years and could have been great if we had a kicker that could hit an extra point. Still won ACC both years

Not so, we were 6 and 4 both years. The next two years we won 5 each year.

Yeah, our kicker missed 3 easy field goals in a 13-10 home loss to Bama. I can’t remember his name. I’m sure he felt bad.

Hard to believe Frank Howard coached 29 years

Jul 11, 2022, 12:12 PM

Dabo would have to coach until 2037 to equal his tenure. Also hard to believe Clemson football has only had 10 head coaches since 1930.

Don't want to hear NOBODY saying anything bad about COACH HOWARD, he devoted his entire life to CLEMSON. WE would not be where we are today with out him. He was a legend and deserves to respected as long as Clemson is called CLEMSON!!
