After Last Year's Challenges and Not Making CFP

May 29, 2022, 9:30 AM

Is the 2022 season a make or break season to stay in that perennial Top 5 ish range or do we have a year to develop Cade. Looking at pre-season starting rankings and our schedule, if Tigers don't have any slip ups and then win at South Bend we should be pretty solid for CFP.

Clemson does not have an expiration date, but this is an ideal year to win with the potential of the defense. I think a CFP berth is quite reasonable and don’t think there’s a ceiling. My argument is based on last year’s “down” year with half the team on crutches and still won 10. Everyone is back, as Dabo said he was happy with health.

Dabo said that the OL will surprise people...

if it does then lookout. If it's just coach-speak then look away.

I think the OL will be a strength either this year or next year. We have too much young talent not to have a good one soon. Hopefully this year. If they are good, it will just come down to QB play and injuries whether we have a great year or not. We all know that though.

OL under Dabo has always been like an old Fleetwood Mac

album, "Mystery to Me", to me. Other highly rated schools can sign new highly rated OL and have success, while we seem to sign new highly rated OL, only to have them fall into a black hole, or something. Mitch Hyatt is the only "Right out of the Box" success story I can recall in recent times.

The good thing this year is we'll have a stealthy schedule with some higher ranked teams along the way. And yes, I can see the coots being ranked too. Win the ACC and make CFP, the narrative won't shift.

The new narrative will shift from Clemson is back to this was Dabo's last ride. 2023 may be more important than this year... Less something crazy happened and we don't get in.

Not making the CFP is not the litmus test of a great program. But being in the conversation at the end of the season is important. Clemson fans have come to expect a top 10 finish. And top 10 keeps you in the conversation nationally and with recruits. Also, I think it's important that Clemson fans value winning the conference. If the only qualifier for success is the CFP, then all but about 8 programs in the country might as well close their doors. It's got to be about more than that.

I think we need to be top 6. 10th? Meh. That's not elite. That's Michigan State and Ole Miss type teams.

We won't have to wait long to find out. We will know by game four. No significant challenges in those early contests. We have been notorious of late with getting a slow start out of the gate and improving ( albeit slower than expected ) as the season wears on. If DJ returns to the form he displayed as a frosh with a better physical and mental approach and the Oline is able to get a push up front I don't see how we aren't dominant early and are able to get Cade some valuable snaps. That will he key I believe. A capable backup in the event DJ struggles. Hopefully that won't be the case but there's mo way to know until they tee it up
